The main aim of this work is to show, how GPGPUs can facilitate certain type of image processing methods. The software used in this paper is used to detect special tissue part, the nuclei on (HE - hematoxilin eosin) stained colon tissue sample images. Since pathologists are working with large number of high resolution images - thus require significant storage space -, one feasible way to achieve reasonable processing time is the usage of GPGPUs. The CUDA software development kit was used to develop processing algorithms to NVIDIA type GPUs. Our work focuses on how to achieve better performance with coalesced global memory access when working with three-channel RGB tissue images, and how to use the on-die shared memory efficiently.

Documenting and verifying systems assembled from components

This paper presents an approach to the problem of documenting the design of a network of components and verifying that its structure is complete and consistent, (i.e., that the components, functioning together, will satisfy the requirements of the complete product), before the components are implemented. Our approach differs from others in that both hardware and software components are viewed as hardware-like devices in which an output value can change instantaneously when input values change and all components operate synchronously rather than in sequence. We define what we mean by completeness and consistency and illustrate how the documents can be used to verify a design before it is implemented.

Development of an advanced embedded system for description of electrophysiological phenomena in ornamental plants by biosignals processing

Extracellular electrical signals that are produced from plants have different patterns depending on factors that may cause stress such as water deficiency, nutrient shortages, high salinity level in the root environment etc. In practice, growers and greenhouse control systems acts against the stress factor when visible symptoms are observed, or when the measured values of parameters related to the stress are outside certain limits during a pre-defined period. However, the decrease in plant growth has already begun during this period with consequences for production. The objective of this work is the development of an advanced embedded wireless sensor to detect electrophysiological phenomena in order to investigate the correlation of biosignal patterns to salinity stress in ornamental plants. This embedded system could be used to improve the efficiency of irrigation control systems especially in soilless cultures. For this reason an integrated embedded hardware was designed for plant biosignal measurements. In order to avoid white Gaussian noise (WGN caused from 50 Hz power line noise as well as the noise of the electrical devices operating inside the greenhouse), the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol was used for wireless communication to the embedded systems. Electrical potential difference in leaves of single stem Chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum moriflorum) plants grown in soilless culture and irrigated with low and high electrical conductivity (EC) nutrient solution were measured using the embedded wireless system and a traditional wire data acquisition system (DAQ). The measurements are recorded for a period of 4 days, via a data acquisition system and processed using LabVIEW code. The results show that biosignal measurements on plants, obtained with the use of the design wireless embedded system have a negligible error in contrast to wired data acquisition, since these are not affected by RF and other similar signal noise. In this paper we present a method for a graph-based retrieval and its application in architectural floor plan retrieval. The proposed method is an extension of a well-known method for subgraph matching. This extension significantly reduces the storage amount and indexing time for graphs where the nodes are labeled with a rather small amount of different classes. In order to reduce the number of possible permutations, a weight function for labeled graphs is introduced and a well-founded total order is defined on the weights of the labels. Inversions which violate the order are not allowed. A computational complexity analysis of the new preprocessing is given and its completeness is proven. Furthermore, in a number of practical experiments with randomly generated graphs the improvement of the new approach is shown. In experiments performed on random sample graphs, the number of permutations has been decreased to a fraction of 10-18 in average compared to the original approach by Messmer. This makes indexing of larger graphs feasible, allowing for fast detection of subgraphs. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

Variation and defect tolerance for diode-based nano crossbars

Bottom-up self-assembly nanofabrication process yields nanodevices with significantly more variations compared to the conventional top-down lithography used in CMOS fabrication. This is in addition to an increased defect density expected for self-assembled nanodevices. Therefore, it is one of the major design challenges to tolerate variation and defects in emerging nano architectures. In this paper, we present different solutions for variation tolerant logic mapping for molecular (diode-based) crossbar array nano architectures using Simulated Annealing as well as a heuristic algorithm. Experimental results and comparisons with exhaustive search and defect-unaware mapping shows the effectiveness of the proposed methods in variation and defect tolerance as well as run time improvement. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd.

In this paper we present a new database suitable for both 2D and 3D face recognition based on photometric stereo, the so-called Photoface database. The Photoface database was collected using a custom-made four-source photometric stereo device that could be easily deployed in commercial settings. Unlike other publicly available databases the level of cooperation between subjects and the capture mechanism was minimal. The proposed device may also be used, to capture 3D expressive faces. Apart from the description of the device and the Photoface database, we present experiments from baseline face recognition and verification algorithms using albedo, normals and the recovered depth maps. Finally, we have conducted experiments in order to demonstrate how different methods in the pipeline of photometric stereo (i.e. normal field computation and depth map reconstruction methods) affect recognition/verification performance.

Several publications such as media articles have pointed out key technical challenges facing Uganda's National Transmission Backbone Infrastructure (NBI) project. The challenges emanate from the use of G652 instead of other fiber-optic cable types like the G655 fiberoptic cable. However, the articles do not suggest ways of addressing the technical limitations of the project. This paper uses an exploratory, quantitative and analytical approach to evaluate the goals of the project, and the already deployed part of the infrastructure, and compares the evaluation results, against the technical capability of the backbone, based on global backbone infrastructure performance benchmarks. A survey of previous work and results from related studies form inputs to a grounded theory-based hypothesis formulation. The paper highlights the national demand of bandwidth by all anticipated users such as government ministries, universities, schools, health centers, administrative headquarters and private sector entities. The findings of the study are validated through comparisons with results of investigations carried out on similar projects in developing countries. Finally the paper suggests ways of addressing the challenges of the NBI project using alternatives such as the use of Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) repeaters after shorter distances, leasing bandwidth from private companies to cater for the deficit, use of microwave links for redundancy, setting up a Network Operation Center (NOC) for operation and maintenance, and deployment of WiMAX as a last mile solution. ©2010 IEEE.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease the etiopathogenesis of which has not yet been fully resolved, and therefore there is no standardized therapeutical approach. During five days we investigated the possible positive effects of propolis and its polyphenolic/flavonoid compounds on animal model psoriasis, induced by the Di-n-Propyl Disulfide iritant (PPD). We monitored the inflammation process by thermographic scanning, an effective and simple method which reproductively records thermographic images of the examinated area. The tested animals were divided into sixteen groups and locally processed during five days with selected substances. Thermal imaging of skin locuses of the abdomen was run on the third and fifth day of the testing. Each image had the marked circle of the tested locus on the abdomen, and the lowest, the highest, and the average sample temperatures were noted within the circle. All of the scanning, processing and analysis were run by Darko Kolaric, Ph. D, a research associate, from the Centre for informatics and computing in the Ruder Boškovic Institute, using the ThermoMED programme. The primary statistical analysis was performed on the summarized data of all the samples. The results of the thermal imaging showed no statistically significant differences in temperature changes on skin locuses of psoriasis formed lesions among the examined groups. Considering the short amount of time, during which the inflammatory reaction could not have been fully developed, the obtained values have been expected. We can conclude that the thermal imaging was realistic, and can be applicable in examining of the inflammatory process in psoriasis and in evaluating the effectiveness of tested substances.

Considering privacy advisory for collaborative settings on mobile devices, this paper presents an innovative approach to simultaneously support dynamically reconfigurable privacy advisory and the usability of providing it. Regarded are interaction design requirements such as user-friendless and non-intrusive advisory as well as restrictions of today's mobile devices like CPU and memory consumption etc. The prototypic implementation of a client-centric privacy advisor based on binary decision diagrams shows that the proposed mechanisms integrated in an iPhone application can be effectively extended and correlated with a usable privacy-enhancing model.
