Bloom's taxonomy of the cognitive domain and the SOLO taxonomy are being increasingly widely used in the design and assessment of courses, but there are some drawbacks to their use in computer science. This paper reviews the literature on educational taxonomies and their use in computer science education, identifies some of the problems that arise, proposes a new taxonomy and discusses how this can be used in application-oriented courses such as programming.

This paper addresses the problems of the robust stability and robust stabilization of a discrete-time system with polytopic uncertainties. A new and simple method is presented to directly decouple the Lyapunov matrix and the system dynamic matrix. Combining this method with the parameter-dependent Lyapunov function approach yields new criteria that include some existing ones as special cases. A numerical example illustrates the improvement over the existing ones.

The Generation Challenge programme (GCP) is a global crop research consortium directed toward crop improvement through the application of comparative biology and genetic resources characterization to plant breeding. A key consortium research activity is the development of a GCP crop bioinformatics platform to support GCP research. This platform includes the following: (i) shared, public platform-independent domain models, ontology, and data formats to enable interoperability of data and analysis flows within the platform;(ii) web service and registry technologies to identify, share, and integrate information across diverse, globally dispersed data sources, as well as to access high-performance computational (HPC) facilities for computationally intensive, high-throughput analyses of project data;(iii) platform-specific middleware reference implementations of the domain model integrating a suite of public (largely open-access/-source) databases and software tools into a workbench to facilitate biodiversity analysis, comparative analysis of crop genomic data, and plant breeding decision making.

We have devised an automated visual surveillance system for monitoring sleeping infants. The system architecture requires that low-level image processing is executed on-camera by an embedded signal processing unit: thus integrating more functionality into a single chip and realising lower product cost. The processing unit quantifies the level of scene activity using a specially designed background subtraction algorithm. In this paper we begin by describing the overall structure of our system. We proceed by presenting our algorithms, and demonstrating their effectiveness in measuring scene activity. We conclude by describing the FPGA-based low-level processing functions, and show how we have optimised them for maximum efficiency on this platform.

Some of the main reasons are the difficulties which the end users have in searching an adequate web service to get the required data. Even if found, the web service rarely fit the exact needs. This paper presents a new framework for dynamical generation of the web services from the heterogeneous data sources on user's demand. The aim of the framework is to generate web services that are customized to the particular requirements. In this paper we present a JXTA-based platform, called Juxta-CAT, which is an effort to use the JXTA architecture to build a job execution-sharing distributed environment. The Juxta-CAT platform has been deployed in a large-scale, distributed and heterogeneous P2P network, based on open JXTA protocols. The goal of our platform is to create a shared Grid where client peers can submit their tasks in the form of java programs stored on signed jar files and are remotely solved on the nodes of the platform. Thus, the main goal of our platform is giving direct access to resources and sharing of the computing resources of nodes, in contrast to other well-known P2P systems that only share hard disk contents. The architecture of our platform is made up of two types of peers: common client peers and broker peers. The former can create and submit their requests using a GUI-based application while the later are the administrators of the Grid, which are in charge of efficiently assigning client requests to the Grid nodes and notify the results to the owner's requests. To assure an efficient use of resources, brokers use an allocation algorithm, which can be viewed as a price-based economic model, to determine the best candidate node to process each new received petition. The implementation and design of peers, groups, job and presence discovery, pipe-based messaging, etc. are developed using the latest updated JXTA libraries (currently release 2.3.7) and JDK 1.5 version. Several types of applications arising from different fields such as scientific calculations, simulations, data mining, etc. can be solved in Juxta-CAT. To create a suitable demo scenario and test the proposed platform, we have joined and used the PlanetLab platform (http://***/).
