The emergence of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) as a driver for the new age of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) provides an opportunity for a wide range of services and applications driven by the various interactions that exist between a vehicle and its environment. However, the nature of road networks affects real-time vehicular movements with respect to the departure, delay, speed and arrival of vehicles. In this paper, we present a data-driven, traffic theory and microscopic traffic simulation approach that can be used in modelling the underlying vehicular network of the IoV. Using the traffic status from the A4 highway dataset in Luxembourg, we obtain vehicular volumes from the vehicle flow rate, define thresholds for traffic status using data scaling and employ microscopic modeling to create traffic scenarios. The analysis from the results of the traffic scenarios shows unique vehicular patterns due to the nature of the road network providing insights that ultimately affect the design and implementation of IoV-based services and applications. © 2024 IEEE.

The demand for more efficient and reliable elevator monitoring systems has increased due to security and safety issues in high-mobility buildings. This paper proposes a microservice architecture for an elevator monitoring system to enhance scalability, flexibility, and fault tolerance by decomposing the system into more minor, loosely coupled services. This paper will discuss the proposed system's design, implementation, and evaluation. The system, equipped with ESP32Cam and ultrasonic sensors, excels in real-time monitoring. Data is processed and analyzed using Python and OpenCV, allowing the system to not only count the number of people in the elevator but also detect any anomalies, ensuring the safety of the occupants. LED notification alerts, managed by NodeMCU8266, are triggered based on ultrasonic sensor data. MongoDB handles user management and analytical data, while the dashboard offers a user-friendly interface for real-time monitoring and system management provide essential information for elevator operators. The architecture's use of MQTT ensures efficient communication between sensors and services, creating a robust, scalable, and efficient solution. © 2024 IEEE.

This study investigates the pre-existing knowledge of first-year students in computer Programming courses, analysing the impact of secondary education backgrounds on their learning experiences. Over the course of five academic years, students at the University of Maribor were assessed through surveys and practical tests to determine their pre-knowledge of algorithmic thinking and problem-solving skills. The research highlights the influence of learning opportunities and the subsequent rise in students with prior programming experience. The findings present differences in self-reported programming knowledge across generations, emphasising the need for adaptive teaching strategies to bridge the knowledge gap. The results show the importance of early programming education and suggest a trend towards digital literacy in secondary education. © 2024 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

In the present study we present a numerical modeling of a laminate magnetic material using an homogenization technique which exploit an inverse problem resolution. The laminate magnetic material is consisting of an alternate of magnetic and insulates layers. The equivalent magnetic reluctivity is computed for the homogenized domain by considering a non linear behavior of the magnetic layers. A finite element method is used to solve the 2D non-linear electromagnetic partial differential equation. An optimization problem is constructed and solved with the association of the 2D finite element resolution and a conjugate bi-gradient algorithm. The computation of the equivalent magnetic reluctivity is then performed for different excitation field value according to B-H curve. The comparison of the obtained B-H curves of the laminate and the homogenized domains to the theoretical B-H curve (experimental data) show a good agreement of laminate results. © 2024 by SCITEPRESS – science and Technology Publications, Lda.

In the domain of software development, it is crucial to maintain high quality in order to meet the increasing demands of users and the rapid pace of technological advancement. This paper explores the concept of quality gates, looking into their historical origin and the methodologies for their establishment and implementation within the software development life-cycle. Quality gates are defined checkpoints ensuring the software meets predefined quality criteria before proceeding to the following stages. These gates include various criteria, where the balance between manual and automated quality assurance is crucial. The paper also highlights tools that support quality gates, emphasising their role in the quality assurance field. © 2024 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

Simple proportional and integral controller is employed to control benchmark hydrodynamic process, a coupled tanks system. The proportional part of the controller is placed in the feedback path to avoid an overshoot in step response of the system. Controller design is an optimization procedure as it minimizes surface between step reference and system output signals. The proposed controller suppresses step disturbance acting at the output of the system. Experiments, carried out as computer simulations, support the analysis. © 2024 IEEE.

In this study, we aim to develop a robust model capable of accurately extracting symptoms from clinical texts written in the Slovenian language. Our methodology involves several steps to achieve this objective. Initially, we identify datasets containing clinical texts in English and select a specialized model designed for symptom extraction from these texts. Then, we annotate the datasets and undertake the translation process into Slovenian, ensuring the preservation of annotations to maintain data integrity. Utilizing the translated dataset, we proceed to fine-tune the selected model specifically for Slovenian texts. Despite our efforts, optimal performance has not yet been attained. Challenges encountered include the translation methodology employed and the architectural limitations of the chosen model, which is primarily optimized for English texts. However, ongoing efforts are underway to address these challenges and enhance the model's performance. Our study represents a step towards improving automated symptom extraction in Slovenian clinical texts, with ongoing work focused on mitigating identified issues to achieve better outcomes. © 2024 IEEE.

The stability of an HVDC transmission network is very important for the reliable transfer of power from renewable energy resources. Therefore, this paper proposes a region of attraction stability analysis method for grid-forming-based modular multilevel converters. The grid forming control uses a model predictive control-based controller for the inner current loop. The stability analysis is carried out using the direct Lyapunov method. For the model predictive control, the modified version of the cost function is used;the same function is also used as the cost function for the direct Lyapunov method. Furthermore, the boundaries formed by the limiters and Lyapunov function entirely explain transient event behavior. © 2024 IEEE.

Wireless power transfer (WPT) plays an important role in medical devices that require contactless energy transfer for either direct powering or recharging their small batteries. Miniaturizing medical devices and improving their WPT link robustness against different variations (e.g., distance, alignment, and load changes) also demands an efficient and adaptive power-management IC (PMIC) to convert the incoming ac power carrier into one or multiple usable dc voltage supplies. This article summarizes the key techniques for WPT and PMIC design. It discusses different modalities for WPT, including inductive, ultrasonic, capacitive, and magnetoelectric (ME) methods, with a focus on their applicability in different types of medical devices with different dimensions, implantation depths, and power requirements. It is concluded that ultrasonic and ME modalities are suitable for WPT to deeply implanted small devices with low power consumption, while inductive and capacitive methods are more suitable for WPT to large implants with shorter depth and higher power consumption. This article also summarizes different PMIC techniques for inductive WPT, particularly conventional voltage mode and more recent current-mode (and reconfigurable) techniques, with an emphasis on their suitability for different input voltage and loading conditions. © 2009-2012 IEEE.

Technological progress has had a dramatic impact on the automotive industry and the concept of intelligent and connected vehicles is developing rapidly. Vehicles are being equipped with various in-vehicle and environmental sensors that generate huge amounts of data, as well as onboard units that can calculate, store and communicate data with other vehicles, infrastructure and the environment. This has led to the development of Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs), which face various challenges due to a heterogeneous and highly dynamic environment, where traditional solutions need to be improved and adapted to meet the networking and processing requirements. The integration of edge and fog computing in VANETs reduces the overhead by placing the necessary resources at the edge of the network closer to the information source. In this paper, we propose VeFog - the new architecture based on edge and fog computing for efficient data processing and dissemination in VANETs. The performance evaluation and simulation results show that the VeFog architecture is efficient, reduces processing time and saves resources with minimal infrastructure utilization. © 2024 IEEE.
