This research investigates the modeling, design, and simulation of a microgrid with advanced energy management controller, developed using MATLAB/Simulink. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis, modeling, and simulation of a smart controller for a boost converter, using an artificial neural network (ANN) for maximum power point tracking (MPPT) to enhance power output. The study begins with a comparison between traditional MPPT techniques and the ANN-based approach. These MPPT strategies are compared in terms of their response to dynamic weather conditions (such as temperature and irradiance variations) and their ability to minimize oscillations around the maximum power point. The simulation results demonstrate that the ANN-based MPPT method outperforms the conventional P&O and IC methods, providing faster response times and higher output power. Additionally, the system's performance was evaluated under conditions of power shortage and during battery charging and discharging cycles, showing the effectiveness of the smart controller in maintaining system stability and optimizing energy management. © 2025 IEEE.

We propose to perform an image-based framework for electrical energy meter *** aim is to extract the image region that depicts the digits and then recognize them to record the consumed *** the readings of serial numbers and energy meter units,an automatic billing system using the Internet of Things and a graphical user interface is deployable in a real-time ***,such region extraction and character recognition become challenging due to image variations caused by several factors such as partial occlusion due to dust on the meter display,orientation and scale variations caused by camera positioning,and non-uniform illumination caused by *** this end,our work evaluates and compares the stateof-the art deep learning algorithm You Only Look Once(YOLO)along with traditional handcrafted features for text extraction and *** image dataset contains 10,000 images of electrical energymeters and is further expanded by data augmentation such as in-plane rotation and scaling tomake the deep learning algorithms robust to these image *** training and evaluation,the image dataset is annotated to produce the ground truth of all the ***,YOLO achieves superior performance over the traditional handcrafted features with an average recognition rate of 98%for all the *** proves to be robust against the mentioned image variations compared with the traditional handcrafted *** proposed method can be highly instrumental in reducing the time and effort involved in the currentmeter reading,where workers visit door to door,take images ofmeters and manually extract readings from these images.

— In recent years, time series prediction has become a highly interesting topic in various applied areas, including clinical time series analysis. Hospitals and other clinical healthcare systems collect Electronic Health Records. These records contain important information that needs to be mined. This information provides a solid basis for predicting hospital readmission, helping to improve healthcare, enhance patient outcomes, and optimize hospital resources. This study introduces a novel deep learning attention-based approach for predicting 30-day ICU readmissions using clinical time series information extracted from the MIMIC III dataset. This approach incorporates time-aware positional encoding into the attention mechanism to enhance predictive performance by capturing the temporal representation of data and considering the temporal order of clinical time series data. This model is compared with cutting-edge models. The significant enhancements in the model performance achieved by the proposed method highlight the effectiveness of incorporating time-aware positional encoding in capturing temporal dependencies and improving prediction outcomes. These results underscore the potential of advanced attention mechanisms in clinical time series analysis. ©2024 IEEE.

Secure Hash Algorithm 3 (SHA-3) is a crucial component in modern cryptographic systems, particularly in applications demanding high security and efficiency. For example, it is vital in System-on-Chip (SoC) applications and resource-constrained environments like IoT devices and embedded systems. However, existing SHA-3 designs face challenges regarding resource limitations and computational efficiency. This paper presents a slice-oriented folded SHA-3 architecture supporting multiple folding parameters for embedded SoC in FPGA implementations. It targeted crypto engines and other resource-limited cryptographic applications. We identified the optimal folding direction and introduced a round function rescheduling method. We proposed a novel interleaving storage strategy to resolve clock cycle delays caused by data dependencies. Additionally, we proposed a simplified round constant mechanism to minimize area consumption. The slice-based folded architecture across all parameter sets are implemented on Xilinx Virtex-7, controlled by an ARM Cortex-M4 processor. Our design achieved a maximum frequency of 324 MHz and the compact implementation, resulting in the 92% reduction in slices compared to basic design. Furthermore, it offered 70% area reduction, 1.44× throughput improvement, and 1.91× gain in efficiency over the previous state of the art. These results show the potential of our design for resource-limited security applications, providing both hardware resource savings and enhanced performance. © 2024 IEEE.

This study deals with the coordination of surge protection devices (SPD) in photovoltaic systems (PV). A PV farm model was developed in MATLAB Simulink with all the main components, solar panels, converter, grounding system, power transformer, cables in the DC and AC branches with their capacitances, and surge protection device throughout the installation. It was found that when lightning strikes the grounding system or in the vicinity of the PV installation, the coordination among SPD types 1, 2, and 3 is lost. Miscoordination can cause damage to several elements of the PV system, mainly the inverters. Finally, solutions were proposed to avoid SPD miscoordination during lightning strikes. © 2024 IEEE.

Communication is an important part of our lives. Communication facilitates interaction between people, allowing us to share our ideas and emotions. The research has focused mainly on one side of communication, namely the conversion of sign language into speech. Contrary to traditional approaches, which focus on using static data to convert sign language into speech, our research brings an innovative perspective by integrating artificial intelligence technologies. This research has largely used static data sets such as alphabets, digits and specific gestures taken from a variety of languages. However, addressing this problem is done using artificial intelligence techniques and methods. In this context, detailed research will be presented, focusing on techniques and methods developed to improve the communication using artificial intelligence (Mediapipe, OpenCV, CNN). The contributions presented in this paper represent a significant advance in the field of communication bringing to the forefront cutting-edge methods and techniques in an evolving field. ©2024 IEEE.

The purpose of virtual network embedding (VNE) is to embed nodes and links of virtual networks to nodes and links of a physical network effectively and efficiently. In other word, it specifies how to efficiently use network resources. Therefore, it plays an important role in network virtualization. Considering that this problem is a non-deterministic polynomial-time hard problem, there are several heuristic methods to effectively deal with this type of problem. With the advent of Software-Defined Networks (SDNs), new possibilities and challenges have emerged in the deployment of virtual network embedding in SDN environments. Considering SDN controllers are critical when designing a new virtual network embedding method for these types of networks. In this work, we propose a novel method that addresses how to map virtual networks for SDNs. Unlike other works in this area, which usually did the mapping of nodes and links in two independent and separate phases, we propose a heuristic method that considers coordination between virtual nodes and links mapping. We conduct experiments to demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithm. The results of the experiments demonstrate that our algorithm improve the performance metrics. It improves the acceptance ratio and increases the revenue and at the same time decreases the cost incurred by the physical network. Moreover, our algorithm improves the average delay to a controller, and maximum delay to a controller which are crucial factors for SDNs. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Black-box optimization (BBO) can be used to optimize functions whose analytic form is unknown. A common approach to realising BBO is to learn a surrogate model which approximates the target black-box function which can then be solved via white-box optimization methods. In this paper, we present our approach BOX-QUBO, where the surrogate model is a QUBO matrix. However, unlike in previous state-of-the-art approaches, this matrix is not trained entirely by regression, but mostly by classification between "good" and "bad" solutions. This better accounts for the low capacity of the QUBO matrix, resulting in significantly better solutions overall. We tested our approach against the state-of-the-art on four domains and in all of them BOX-QUBO showed better results. A second contribution of this paper is the idea to also solve white-box problems, i.e. problems which could be directly formulated as QUBO, by means of black-box optimization in order to reduce the size of the QUBOs to the information-theoretic minimum. For a given polygonal region P, the Lawn Mowing Problem (LMP) asks for a shortest tour T that gets within Euclidean distance 1/2 of every point in P;this is equivalent to computing a shortest tour for a unit-diameter cutter C that covers all of P. As a generalization of the Traveling Salesman Problem, the LMP is NP-hard;unlike the discrete TSP, however, the LMP has defied efforts to achieve exact solutions, due to its combination of combinatorial complexity with continuous geometry. We provide a number of new contributions that provide insights into the involved difficulties, as well as positive results that enable both theoretical and practical progress. (1) We show that the LMP is algebraically hard: it is not solvable by radicals over the field of rationals, even for the simple case in which P is a 2 × 2 square. This implies that it is impossible to compute exact optimal solutions under models of computation that rely on elementary arithmetic operations and the extraction of kth roots, and explains the perceived practical difficulty. (2) We exploit this algebraic analysis for the natural class of polygons with axis-parallel edges and integer vertices (i.e., polyominoes), highlighting the relevance of turn-cost minimization for Lawn Mowing tours, and leading to a general construction method for feasible tours. (3) We show that this construction method achieves theoretical worst-case guarantees that improve previous approximation factors for polyominoes. (4) We demonstrate the practical usefulness beyond polyominoes by performing an extensive practical study on a spectrum of more general benchmark polygons: We obtain solutions that are better than the previous best values by Fekete et al., for instance sizes up to 20 times larger. © Sándor P.
