The increasing computational capabilities of IoT end devices push the deployment of application logic tasks directly on the extreme edge rather than the cloud or edge nodes. However, there are still unresolved issues on the Over-The-Air (OTA) software update operations for IoT end devices: (i) the hardware heterogeneity in IoT settings requires custom code for each different device type; (ii) the growing complexity of microcontroller code couples the development of high-level processing tasks with low-level operations; (iii) efficient methods for updating target IoT devices in a specific geographical area are absent. To address these issues, we propose an OTA firmware update framework that utilizes WebAssembly (WASM) and incorporates location-aware features. We split the application logic in WASM from the rest of the firmware written in native code, in order to create a greater separation of concerns. WASM's platform independence creates an abstraction layer for the underlying hardware, allowing the same application logic to be deployed virtually to any IoT device. We integrate a location-aware extension of the MQTT protocol in our framework to enable software updates targeting devices in specific geographical areas. Finally, our experiments demonstrate that location awareness does not add significant overhead to the system and that the performance of WASM in a microcontroller is comparable to native code and superior to Micropython.

Resilient Cooperative control of Multiple DC Microgrids With Interconnection Networks Against Cyber Attacks

The two control objectives of voltage regulation and precise current sharing are conflicting in multi-bus DC microgrids. In this paper, a distributed control strategy is proposed, and it can achieve accurate current sharing and regulate the voltage of a critical node to the rated value. However, such a distributed control system is susceptible to potential cyber attacks that could deteriorate microgrids performances by corrupting communication links or actuators. To overcome these difficulties, we design the interconnected communication networks to establish a resilient cooperative system of multiple microgrids against unknown bounded injection attacks. The proposed resilient control strategy can achieve the control objectives of maintaining voltage regulation and current sharing within each microgrids under different operating conditions, and the interconnected system consisting of multiple microgrids cooperates to mitigate the adverse effect of cyber attacks. The dynamics and stability of the overall close-loop system of the DC microgrids are analyzed, in the present or absent of cyber attacks. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in two 4-bus DC microgrids. © 2023 IEEE.

Applying System Thinking to Learn from Accident of Modern Automatic control Systems

Modern societies increasingly rely on automatic control systems. These systems are hardly pure technical systems; instead they are complex socio-technical systems, which consist of technical elements and social components. It is necessary to have a systematic approach to analyze these systems because it is growing evidence that accidents from these systems usually have complex causal factors which form an interconnected network of events, rather than a simple cause-effect chain. We take railway Train control systems (TCS) as an example to demonstrate the importance of the socio-technical approach to analyze the system. The paper presents an investigation of recent high-speed railway accident by applying STAMP - one of the most notable socio-technical system analysis techniques, outlines improvements to the system which could avoid similar accidents in the future. We also provide our valuable feedback for the use of STAMP.

With an increasing demand for wireless communications, it is difficult for traditional communication technologies to achieve high-quality multi-channel wireless transmissions. Complex-amplitude metasurfaces provide an effective method to deal with this issue by jointly controlling the amplitude and phase of electromagnetic (EM) waves. However, the limitations of single-layer transmission efficiency and amplitude-phase coupling make it challenging to achieve multi-channel high-quality transmission and system integration. Here, a single-layer complex-amplitude metasurface design strategy for multi-channel high-quality transmission is proposed. The amplitude and phase of each transmission channel can be concurrently controlled by adjusting the structural parameters and rotation angles of the resonators. The metasurface successfully reconstructs different holograms in five transmission channels. All experimental results align well with the calculated and simulated results, demonstrating an innovative solution for multi-channel high-quality information transmission, with significant potential applications in the fields of wireless communications. © 2025 Optica Publishing Group.

The surge in smart device usage and the demand for high-throughput, low-latency mobile networks have accelerated the adoption of distributed smart applications and Collaborative Resource Management (CRM) techniques such as Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC). With its ability to handle large data volumes, computational demands, scalability, and high energy consumption, MEC represents the next generation of Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC), addressing key challenges in emerging smart applications. MEC supports real-time, high-throughput, and energy-efficient techniques like task offloading and ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC). However, as these techniques become more widespread, their diversity increases, leading to complexities that make them harder to understand and validate in different applications. This includes their use in areas like assistance for unmanned vehicles (UVs), autonomous driving, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), high altitude platforms (HAPs), underwater unmanned vehicles (UUVs), satellite air-ground communication (SAGC), and other emerging systems that rely on Collaborative Resource Management (CRM). Although a number of review articles pertaining to MEC systems exist, we analyzed techniques beyond task offloading that explore MEC system applicability in diverse domains, including UUVs, vehicular edge computing, Re-configurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS), Massive MIMO, autonomous driving, HAPs, and SAGC. From the perspective of these optimization techniques, this article highlights their role in shaping MEC’s evolution, focusing on parameters such as real-time response, energy efficiency, and other critical factors in task offloading processes. We also explored the role of Standard Development Organizations (SDOs), such as ETSI and IEEE, in advancing MEC systems. Emotion recognition in conversation (ERC) aims at accurately identifying emotional states expressed in conversational content. Existing ERC methods, although relying on semantic understanding, often encounter challenges when confronted with incomplete or misleading semantic information. In addition, when dealing with the interaction between emotional and semantic information, existing methods are often difficult to effectively distinguish the complex relationship between the two, which affects the accuracy of emotion recognition. To address the problems of semantic misdirection and emotional cross-talk encountered by traditional models when confronted with complex conversational data, we propose a semantic and emotional dual channel (SEDC) strategy for emotion recognition in conversations to process emotional and semantic information independently. Under this strategy, emotion information provides an auxiliary recognition function when the semantics are unclear or lacking, enhancing the accuracy of the model. Our model consists of two modules: the emotion processing module accurately captures the emotional features of each utterance through contrastive learning, and then constructs a dialogue emotion propagation map to simulate the emotional information conveyed in the dialogue;the semantic processing module combines an external knowledge base to enhance the semantic expression of the dialogue through knowledge enhancement strategies. This divide-and-conquer approach allows us to more deeply analyze the emotional and semantic dimensions of complex dialogues. Experimental results on the IEMOCAP, EmoryNLP, MELD, and DailyDialog datasets show that our approach significantly outperforms existing techniques and effectively improves the accuracy of dialogue emotion recognition. sEMG (surface electromyography) signal control of bionic prostheses has been widely studied over the past few years. In particular, sparse sEMG signals are rapidly developing in the field of gesture recognition for their convenience, noninvasiveness, and ease of access. However, compared with high-density EMG signals, sparse EMG signals lack rich feature information, which in turn affects gesture recognition accuracy. In order to reduce the loss of feature information of sparse EMG signals in the spatio-temporal dimension, this paper proposes a hybrid neural network Res-LSTM combining residual network and long short-term memory network. The ordinary convolutional blocks in the CNN network are replaced with residual blocks, and the final fully connected layer is removed and a constant mapping layer is added to adequate extraction of spatial feature information of the data. The Res layer’s output is utilized as the input for the long and short-term memory (LSTM) network, which further extracts the features of the data in the temporal dimension, and finally completes the categorization output through a fully connected layer. The average accuracy of 91.11% for gesture-motion classification was verified by training on a homebrew dataset;and tested on a public dataset, NinaPro DB1, with an average accuracy of 91.03%. The experimental findings indicate that the proposed Res-LSTM network framework contributes to solving the problem of lack of feature information of sparse sEMG signals and improves the pattern recognition accuracy. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

A recently introduced measure of Boolean functions complexity–disjunctive complexity (DC)–is compared with other complexity measures: the space complexity of streaming algorithms and the complexity of nondeterministic branching programs (NBP). We show that DC is incomparable with NBP. Specifically, we present a function that has low NBP but has subexponential DC. Conversely, we provide arguments based on computational complexity conjectures to show that DC can superpolynomially exceed NBP in certain cases. Additionally, we prove that the monotone version of NBP complexity is strictly weaker than DC. We prove that the space complexity of one-pass streaming algorithms is strictly weaker than DC. Furthermore, we introduce a generalization of streaming algorithms that captures the full power of DC. This generalization can be expressed in terms of nondeterministic algorithms that irreversibly write 1s to entries of a Boolean vector (i.e., changes from 1 to 0 are not allowed). Finally, we discuss an unusual phenomenon in disjunctive complexity: the existence of uniformly hard functions. The economic dispatch problem (EDP) poses a significant challenge in energy management for modern power systems, particularly as these systems undergo expansion. This growth escalates the demand for communication resources and increases the risk of communication failures. To address this challenge, we propose a distributed algorithm with network-independent step sizes and an event-triggered mechanism, which reduces communication requirements and enhances adaptability. Unlike traditional methods, our algorithm uses network-independent step sizes derived from each agent's local cost functions, thus eliminating the need for detailed network topology knowledge. The theoretical derivation identifies a range of step size values that depend solely on the objective function's strong convexity and the gradient's Lipschitz continuity. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm is shown to achieve a linear convergence rate, assuming the event triggering threshold criteria are met for linear convergence. Numerical experiments further validate the effectiveness and advantages of our proposed distributed algorithm by demonstrating its ability to maintain good convergence characteristics while reducing communication frequency. © 2024 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.
