For complete implementation of performance Modeling or any other similar emerging processes, there are two major concerns that need to be addressed and they are First, how do we apply the concept? Second, what level of data do we need to successfully create the models with maximum accuracy? In this paper we have attempted to present possible data capturing techniques which typically play a major role in any Enterprise application's end to end flow. Developers or performance specialists can visualize their software architecture and can use the techniques and methods presented here to collect input data to create various performance models for their application using any of the commonly used model simulation tools. We have demonstrated this process using SPE-ED as a model simulation tool, however we strongly feel that other tools can be used to simulate the models, using the same techniques and processes. The target readers for this case study mainly constitute performance engineers and architects who intend to understand the performance behavior of their system early in the software development life cycle.

Currently, the one predictable thing is the unpredictability of the environment in which enterprises are operating. No wonder businesses are striving for ways to introduce predictability in the way they perform. Our goal here is to present an analytical performance model for a batch processing business application. It is based on the study proposed by Dr. Gunther in his technical paper [Gunther 2001] which is a pre-requisite to go ahead with understanding this paper. In our study, a methodology to quantify the throughput for a higher load batch configuration based on knowledge of throughput for preliminary loads is proposed. It will help greatly to predict the number of processors required to achieve maximum throughput for an application. Also, we have been able to predict the optimum number of parallel processes to achieve maximum throughput for a system. We believe that it would aid performance analysts to determine the scalability of an application without performing the measurements in entirety thus saving lot of physical resources, time and effort for an otherwise tedious task. There are several ways to optimize the Java application performance. performance of application includes application responsiveness, Transactions-per-Second (TPS) and resource utilization. This paper demonstrates various areas to look for the problem identification, to analyze the problem, various logs to collect, and how to analyze logs by using tools. This paper helps to identify performance issues and how some specific tuning results in performance improvements. The final aim of the paper is to better understand basic Java performance issues and to decide optimal parameters for thread pools, JVM arguments etc. Copyright © 2010, Infosys Technologies.
