In 2023, La Niña conditions that generally prevailed in the eastern Pacific Ocean from mid-2020 into early 2023 gave way to a strong El Niño by October. Atmospheric concentrations of Earth’s major greenhouse gases—carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide—all increased to record-high levels. The annual global average carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere rose to 419.3±0.1 ppm, which is 50% greater than the pre-industrial level. The growth from 2022 to 2023 was 2.8 ppm, the fourth highest in the record since the 1960s. The combined short-term effects of El Niño and the long-term effects of increasing levels of heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere contributed to new records for many essential climate variables reported here. The annual global temperature across land and oceans was the highest in records dating as far back as 1850, with the last seven months (June–December) having each been record warm. Over land, the globally averaged temperature was also record high. Dozens of countries reported record or near-record warmth for the year, including China and continental Europe as a whole (warmest on record), India and Russia (second warmest), and Canada (third warmest). Intense and widespread heatwaves were reported around the world. In Vietnam, an all-time national maximum temperature record of 44.2°C was observed at Tuong Duong on 7 May, surpassing the previous record of 43.4°C at Huong Khe on 20 April 2019. In Brazil, the air temperature reached 44.8°C in Araçuaí in Minas Gerais on 20 November, potentially a new national record and 12.8°C above normal. The effect of rising temperatures was apparent in the cryosphere, where snow cover extent by June 2023 was the smallest in the 56-year record for North America and seventh smallest for the Northern Hemisphere overall. Pumpkin and arrowroot starch instant porridge is a food product that is convenient to serve and appetizing to the panelist. Pumpkin and arrowroot starch instant porridge is a dry product that contains sugar; therefore, it is sensitive to moisture change during storage. Developing further product requires investigation on the proper storage condition and product stability during shelf life. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the different patterns of moisture absorption during storage. Moisture sorption isotherm of pumpkin and arrowroot starch-based instant porridge was determined using static gravimetric method at 25°C. The sample was reserved in a room RH controlled by different types of water activity (aw) from 0.07 to 0.97 to reach a balance water content. Moisture absorption was fitted to the GAB model (Guggenheim-Anderson-de Boer). The permeability of the 0.08 mm polypropylene plastic container and the shelf life of pumpkin and arrowroot starch-based instant porridge were investigated according to treatment with an accelerated technique. The result showed that the moisture sorption isotherm of pumpkin and arrowroot starch-based instant porridge showed a sigmoid curve. The shelf life of pumpkin and arrowroot starch-based instant porridge that was packed in 0.08 mm polypropylene plastic containers at 70% RH was 178.60 days or 5.96 months.

Rice tillering is an important agronomic trait regulated by plant genetic and environmental factors. However, the role and mechanism of the root microbiota in modulating rice tillering have not been explored. Here, we examined the root microbiota composition and tiller numbers of 182 genome-sequenced rice varieties grown under field conditions and uncovered a significant correlation between root microbiota composition and rice tiller number. Using cultivated bacterial isolates, we demonstrated that various members of the root microbiota can regulate rice tillering in both laboratory and field conditions. Genetic, biochemical, and structural analyses revealed that cyclo(Leu-Pro), produced by the tiller-inhibiting bacterium Exiguobacterium R2567, activates the rice strigolactone (SL) signaling pathway by binding to the SL receptor OsD14, thus regulating tillering. The present work provides insight into how the root microbiota regulates key agronomic traits and offers a promising strategy for optimizing crop growth by harnessing the root microbiota in sustainable agriculture. © 2025 The Authors

This study aimed at assessing the oil yield potency of palm oil, based on fruits percentage (% fruit) and percentage of fresh fruit bunches (% FFB) due to the storage at different ripeness (under-ripe, ripe, over-ripe, and loose fruit from bunches) from fresh fruit bunches (FFB) originating from plantations in Ungaran, Central Java, Indonesia. A completely randomized design (CRD) with 2 factors on the ripening and the storage levels of FFB was used. The parameters observed at the initial stage were oil contents as the basis for calculation, and the yield potencies were then analyzed on the basis of % fruits and % FFB. The data obtained were analyzed by ANOVA and continued with Duncan test α = 0.05 using SPSS version 25. Results showed that both of the ripening level of palm fruit bunches and storage time significantly (α = 0.05) affected the yield potency on the basis of % fruit or % FFB, the potential yield value was based on the percentage of fruit higher than the yield potential based on the percentage of FFB. The highest yield potential based on the percentage of fruit found on ripe FFB with a storage time of 12 hours and the lowest on under-ripe FFB with a storage time of 60 hours. While the highest potential yield based on the percentage of FFB was found on ripe FFB with a storage time of 12 hours and the lowest on under-ripe FFB with a storage time of 60 hours.

Drying was one of the primary processes in essential oil production. Time factor in drying affects both the content and chemical compositions of essential oils. This study aims to evaluate the influence of the drying time of kaffir lime leaves on the yield at room temperature and the major volatile compounds in the essential oils by observing day-to-day treatments. As a key odorants in essential oils, the quantity of citronellal was determined by Gas Chromatography (GC) using the standard compound. Based on the daily observation results, a long-time drying gave a significant effect on the yield and the major volatile compounds. The highest yield 1.26±0.07 % (w/w) was obtained on the fourth day, while the highest content of citronellal compounds, 87.58±0.33% was achieved on the fifth day of drying,. A prolonged drying time resulted in a negative effect on not only the quantity, but also the quality of essential oils. Accordingly, this study suggests that the drying technique at room temperature best lasts for four until five days to obtain the most favorable quality and quantity of essential oils.

Background: Diabetes is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide, and affects people regardless of country, age group, or sex. Using the most recent evidentiary and analytical framework from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD), we produced location-specific, age-specific, and sex-specific estimates of diabetes prevalence and burden from 1990 to 2021, the proportion of type 1 and type 2 diabetes in 2021, the proportion of the type 2 diabetes burden attributable to selected risk factors, and projections of diabetes prevalence through 2050. Methods: Estimates of diabetes prevalence and burden were computed in 204 countries and territories, across 25 age groups, for males and females separately and combined;these estimates comprised lost years of healthy life, measured in disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs;defined as the sum of years of life lost [YLLs] and years lived with disability [YLDs]). We used the Cause of Death Ensemble model (CODEm) approach to estimate deaths due to diabetes, incorporating 25 666 location-years of data from vital registration and verbal autopsy reports in separate total (including both type 1 and type 2 diabetes) and type-specific models. Other forms of diabetes, including gestational and monogenic diabetes, were not explicitly modelled. Total and type 1 diabetes prevalence was estimated by use of a Bayesian meta-regression modelling tool, DisMod-MR 2.1, to analyse 1527 location-years of data from the scientific literature, survey microdata, and insurance claims;type 2 diabetes estimates were computed by subtracting type 1 diabetes from total estimates. Mortality and prevalence estimates, along with standard life expectancy and disability weights, were used to calculate YLLs, YLDs, and DALYs. Zinc Oxide (ZnO) nanorods were synthesized by using zinc acetate as a precursor via thermal decomposition method and then used to prepare [email protected] nanocomposite by facile room-temperature approach using a colloidal coagulation effect. The as prepared [email protected] nanocomposite was applied to modify the working electrode surface in an electrochemical sensor of Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ for the first time. The morphologies of ZnO and [email protected] nanocomposite were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, that exhibits the nanorod shape with an average diameter of 89 ± 18 nm, uniformly dispersed and intercalated between each G layer. Furthermore, the important factors affecting on the sensor sensitivity, including [email protected] ratio, [email protected] concentration, Bi 3+ concentration and electrochemical parameters were systematically investigated using square-wave anodic stripping voltammetry. Under the optimal conditions, a linear range was found to be 10–200 μg L −1 and the detection limits were 0.6 and 0.8 μg L -1 for Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ , respectively. Eventually, it was successfully used for the simultaneous detection of Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ in real wastewater samples and the results corresponded well with a standard inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy.
