Effects of an automated programming assessment system on the learning performances of experienced and novice learners

programming ability is the core ability of this era and can be obtained and improved through practice. In this paper, an Automated programming Assessment system based on Mastery learning and Peer competition (APAMP) was proposed and developed. APAMP allows students to practice repeatedly by providing immediate feedback after their programs are submitted. It also presents an analytical dashboard as a competition mechanism for students to visualize their learning performance and compare their performance with peers. By incorporating APAMP into programming courses, students can master programming skills through repeated practice, and their enthusiasm for learning programming can also be encouraged by peer competition. To evaluate the effects of APAMP on the learning performance of students with programming language learning and novice students, a quasi-experiment was conducted in a high school. The experimental results showed that the learning achievement of the two groups of students improved significantly. Moreover, the learning attitude of students in the experienced group improved significantly, with the experienced students benefiting more from the system than the novice students. In fact, the novice students showed a significant decline in learning attitude and learning motivation, which was contrary to our intuition. © 2021 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

With the advance of artificial intelligence and natural language processing technology, a new tool is standing out in the field of understanding and generating natural language in a sophisticated way: the Large Language Model (LLM). According to several authors, LLMs can be used for various types of medical cases, providing access to different sources of information, and have opened up countless opportunities in the healthcare sector. This work aims to share the lessons learned during the process of developing an LLM-based assistant aimed at specific pathologies that are more prevalent in the elderly in order to support caregivers, whether they are private individuals, home care organizations, nursing homes or others. Integration of a Microfluidics System With a U-Shaped Optical Fiber Sensor for Sensing Various Concentrations of Glucose

This study introduces a successfully manufactured U-shaped optical fiber sensor integrated with a microfluidics system to detect varying glucose concentrations. It outlines the fabrication process of the microfluidics system, accomplished using a CO2 laser on polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) material. Through three cycles of experiments involving different glucose concentrations, the results indicate a consistent trend in both resonance wavelength and transmission loss, showing an increase as glucose concentration rises from 5% to 50%. The system demonstrates a high wavelength sensitivity coefficient of 0.114 nm/% with ${R}^{{2}} =0.95$ and a notable transmission loss sensitivity of 0.09 dB/% and ${R}^{{2}} =0.94$ . This advanced system proves to be effective in achieving rapid, sensitive, and cost-efficient glucose monitoring. Consequently, the microfluidics system is deemed suitable for its intended purpose.

developing cost-effective photoelectrodes with a low band gap in the NIR-visible regions remains a challenge to achieve effective hydrogen production. We report the details of superstrate-configured photocathodes, consisting of antimony selenide (Sb2Se3) light absorbing layers with titanium dioxide (TiO2) as a hole transport layer, exhibiting the capability for hydrogen evolution with broad range light absorption enabled by the low band gap value of ∼1.2 eV of Sb2Se3. Strong anisotropy is a significant characteristic property of Sb2Se3, allowing superior electrical transportation along the [hkl] crystallographic orientation, which is obtained via close space evaporation of presynthesized bulk material at a growth temperature of 250 °C, over the solution-processed TiO2 film on a fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate. The superstrate-configured FTO/TiO2/Sb2Se3 photocathode exhibited a photocurrent density of 100 μA cm-2 at −0.3 V vs RHE in 0.5 M H2SO4 under 1 sun illumination. To further improve photocurrent density, Pt as a cocatalyst was deposited over Sb2Se3 that led to enhanced photocurrent to 3 mA cm-2 at −0.3 V vs RHE in 0.5 M H2SO4 under 1 sun illumination. despite the relatively lower photocurrent observed, which resulted due to a large conduction band offset (ΔECB = 0.99 eV) of the TiO2/Sb2Se3 interface in a superstrate configuration, a significantly lower onset potential of −0.1 V vs RHE was observed. The results are encouraging due to the low band gap of Sb2Se3, photocorrosion stability, and straightforward fabrication, which is expected to assist for significant outcomes. © 2024 American Chemical Society.

Fog and rain water chemistry in a tea plantation of northern Taiwan

Tea plantations are expanding globally and many are in mountainous areas with frequent fog but few studies have examined fog chemistry in these areas. We examined chemical composition of fog and rain water at a tea plantation in northern Taiwan. Fog water was collected using a Kroneis passive cylindrical fog-water collector and rain water was collected using a 20-cm-diameter funnel. The most abundant ions were Cl− and Na+ in both fog and rain waters due to the proximity of the site to the coast. The order of abundance of other ions was NO3− > Mg2+ > SO42− > Ca2+ > NH4+ > K+ > H+ in fog water and SO42− > K+ > NO3− > NH4+ > Ca2+ > Mg2+ > H+ in rain water. The concentration enrichment ratio (fog to rain) ranged between 2.2 (K+) and 22 (Mg2+) lying between sites near major emission sources and sites in remote areas, possibly because the immediate surrounding landscape is covered with secondary forests although it is near large cities. Factor analysis highlights the influences of sea-salt aerosols on the variation of fog and rain water chemistry. Sea-salt corrections using Na+ as the sea salt tracer led to negative concentrations of Cl− and Mg2+ suggesting that assumptions involved in sea-salt corrections were not satisfied. Agriculture influence is identified as a unique factor for explaining variance of K+, NH4+, and dissolved organic nitrogen (dON) concentrations in fog water but not rain water. Ion concentrations in fog and rain water were generally higher in the weekly samples associated with air trajectories passing through the continental East Asia than those associated with oceanic trajectories pointing to the role of regional pollution sources in affecting local fog and rain water chemistry. Small-Molecule Analysis Based on dNA Strand displacement Using a Bacteriorhodopsin photoelectric Transducer: Taking ATP as an Example

A uniformly oriented purple membrane (PM) monolayer containing photoactive bacteriorhodopsin has recently been applied as a sensitive photoelectric transducer to assay color proteins and microbes quantitatively. This study extends its application to detecting small molecules, using adenosine triphosphate (ATP) as an example. A reverse detection method is used, which employs AuNPs labeling and specific dNA strand displacement. A PM monolayer-coated electrode is first covalently conjugated with an ATP-specific nucleic acid aptamer and then hybridized with another gold nanoparticle-labeled nucleic acid strand with a sequence that is partially complementary to the ATP aptamer, in order to significantly minimize the photocurrent that is generated by the PM. The resulting ATP-sensing chip restores its photocurrent production in the presence of ATP, and the photocurrent recovers more effectively as the ATP concentration increases. direct and single-step ATP detection is achieved in 15 min, with detection limits of 5 nM and a dynamic range of 5 nM–0.1 mM. The sensing chip exhibits high selectivity against other ATP analogs and is satisfactorily stable in storage. The ATP-sensing chip is used to assay bacterial populations and achieves a detection limit for Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli of 102 and 103 CFU/mL, respectively. The demonstration shows that a variety of small molecules can be simultaneously quantified using PM-based biosensors. © 2023 by the authors.

Purpose: We investigated the volumetric changes in the components of the cholinergic pathway for patients with early mild cognitive impairment (EMCI) and those with late mild cognitive impairment (LMCI). The effect of patients’ apolipoprotein 4 (APOE-ε4) allele status on the structural changes were analyzed. Methods: Structural magnetic resonance imaging data were collected. Patients’ demographic information, plasma data, and validated global cognitive composite scores were included. Relevant features were extracted for constructing machine learning models to differentiate between EMCI (n = 312) and LMCI (n = 541) and predict patients’ neurocognitive function. The data were analyzed primarily through one-way analysis of variance and two-way analysis of covariance. Results: Considerable differences were observed in cholinergic structural changes between patients with EMCI and LMCI. Cholinergic atrophy was more prominent in the LMCI cohort than in the EMCI cohort (P < 0.05 family-wise error corrected). APOE-ε4 differentially affected cholinergic atrophy in the LMCI and EMCI cohorts. For LMCI cohort, APOE-ε4 carriers exhibited increased brain atrophy (left amygdala: P = 0.001;right amygdala: P = 0.006, and right Ch123, P = 0.032). EMCI and LCMI patients showed distinctive associations of gray matter volumes in cholinergic regions with executive (R² = 0.063 and 0.030 for EMCI and LMCI, respectively) and language (R² = 0.095 and 0.042 for EMCI and LMCI, respectively) function. Conclusions: Our data confirmed significant cholinergic atrophy differences between early and late stages of mild cognitive impairment. Students’ computational thinking and programming skills may grow due to collaborative programming. But as the researchers have noted, students frequently do not use metacognition to manage their cognitive activities while collaborating, which negatively affects learning. This study created a metacognition-based collaborative programming (MCP) system to improve students’ performance in collaborative programming. A seven-week study examined how the approach affected students’ performance in programming courses. The 88 middle school students were split into two groups: the experimental group received the metacognition-based collaborative programming approach, and the control group received the conventional computer-supported collaborative programming approach. The results indicated that the metacognitive-based collaborative programming approach enhanced students’ academic scores in programming courses and their computational thinking tendencies. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

AC-dC converters almost always require common-mode (CM) filters to restrict conducting their electromagnetic interference (EMI) emissions to the power grid and ensure compliance with EMI certification requirements. These CM filters, which are based on the well-known LC lowpass filter, are typically bulky and expensive. Hence, a method for passive $\mathbf{C M}$ current cancellation using a nonlinear model is proposed herein. This method is entirely composed of passive components and offers advantages in terms of cost and system reliability. Compared to conventional passive LC filters, the number of magnetic components remains unchanged. This study proposes the derivation of a nonlinear model to estimate the filter performance using measured data from an actual CM choke; however, the proposed method does not require the mathematical model of a CM choke.

Conventional boost converters operating with hard-switching result in low conversion efficiency and increased electromagnetic interference emissions. In this paper, a cost-efficient passive snubber is proposed with a few additional components: two diodes, one capacitor, and one inductor. Moreover, because these snubber components are not located on the main power processing path, they only require low ratings, resulting in improved cost-effectiveness.
