The use of medical surveillance and predictive analysis is now more readily available through the intelligent use of modern technology with the use of software tools. Google Trends (GT) is an internet research tool initially utilised for the surveillance of the occurrence of influenza (Flu) internet search trends. Within the last 20 years the internet has become integral to health surveillance by reducing the time to the actual recognition of a disease outbreak, or the detection of a disease trend. GT primarily focused on detecting an outbreak of various strains of the Flu infecting different regions, sporadically or endemically, by monitoring the internet user seeking such medical information. It is currently utilised as an adjunct to the traditional surveillance tools used in traditional modern medicine. In this paper we have attempted to apply such search criteria using GT within a typical healthcare scenario or disease trend. We focused on the most common diseases found within the South African healthcare environment and presented the results accordingly. The results were found to be aligned to the results of traditional medical surveillance tools. The GT results presented in this paper may have similar applications in other areas of medicine and disease monitoring efforts in South Africa whereby the general population can derive meaningful insights of such disease trends. In addition there is a distinct awareness of this research tool, where many users are utilising the tool for healthcare searches which is becoming more evident in the medical literature.

Several studies have been conducted on the complexity of computer programs. Metrics of quantifying computer programs based on programming language, lines of code, or number of modules have been studied. One open problem is: how to measure the complexity of computer programming problems, based on the constructs in their solutions. In this paper, we present a tool called NOPCE (The NOvice Program Complexity Estimator) that measures the complexity of programming problems based on the constructs they contain. NOPCE takes any given novice program written in C# and computes an aggregated weight based on a look-up table of predefined weights for programming constructs. We have presented an evaluation that compares the human perception of problem complexity with that of NOPCE. Results show that, humans agreed with NOPCE on problem ranking, most of the time. This tool may find applications in computer education, where difficulty balancing of programming problems is paramount.

Problem synthesis is a formal task in Artificial Intelligence. This task involves the automatic generation of problems and their respective solutions across different domains (including Mathematics). Techniques for problem s ynthesi s vary widely. In this paper, we present a newly designed context-free grammar (or CFG) that specifies the rules governing the formulation of specific classes of Integration problems and their solutions. These grammar rules were implemented in a software tool, and produced many Integration problems and solutions rendered in LATEX. A hundred thousand instances of these synthesised problems and solutions can be found at: ***/integralproblems2019. The resulting problems and solution may find applications in Education (as assessment and/or practice problems), hence, aiding the learning of integration as a topic in Mathematics.

Students often struggle to communicate with their peers or lecturers about some of the issues they face during their time at university, either it be academic or personal. One of these issues is introductory programming, in instances were they choose to memorise code in order to pass rather than understanding how the logic behind the code actually works. Programming requires an understanding of how a certain logical flows and algorithm work. In this article, we discuss the difficulties that students face in introductory programming. We have also developed an interactive AI chatbot tool that students can interact with on some of the academic issues they may face. They can ask for advice on how to understand algorithms and what measures to take in order to understand programming logic and visualise metal models of the algorithms. The chatbot can also be used for personal advice. A survey that was conducted showed that there is a need for such a tool in aiding students through their university life.

This article reports the development of an intelligent Chatbot called PathBot. PathBot is used to guide visitors to locate venues on the University of Johannesburg's Bunting Road campus. The conversation of PathBot happens through a Mobile Application client. PathBot processes user's text using the DialogFlow API. We have designed a Finite Automaton that represents a sub-map of the campus. Extracted tokens from the DialogFlow API is sent to this Automaton, and an algorithm is used to generate descriptions of paths from where a user is, to where they want to go. An evaluation of the user's opinion about this tool and its userability was conducted and most users agreed that this Automaton-driven tool is helpful in locating venues on the mapped campus.

Most tools for generating alphanumeric passwords often combine string tokens without considering semantics, as semantics contribute to the remembrance of a password string. We propose a formal method for the generation of passwords with semantic annotations using context-free grammars. A context-free grammar is a system with which one can make an infinite set of strings or objects. Users are allowed to specify their interests (such as music, movie, etc.) and phrases from these interests are used, in combination with at most three digits and one special character, to generate memorable passwords. This idea is implemented in a software tool called PassGen. PassGen takes, as input user interests, and generate n passwords for the user to choose from. 20,000 samples of generated passwords can be found at https://***/SyntacticPassword2018. A Survey of twenty seven responses shows that eighteen respondents agree that a tool that generates memorable secure passwords suggestion for users to pick from will be useful, while fourteen respondents agree that some passwords we generated using context-free grammars are memorable.

Structured Query Language (SQL) remains a standard language used in Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMSs), and has found applications in healthcare (patient registries), businesses (inventories, trend analysis), military, and education, etc. Although, SQL statements are English-like, the process of writing SQL queries is often problematic for non-technical end-users. To address this problem, a tool called Narrations-2-SQL is developed to allow an end-user to specify a query in natural language. Narrations-2-SQL is a desktop application that uses a Jumping Finite Automaton (JFA) - a type of Finite Machine for translating natural language descriptions into SQL queries, execute the queries, and provide a feedback to a user. An experimental evaluation was performed on 204 crowdsourced queries in natural language from the XNorthwind DB. Our results show an accuracy of 88%. To get the users' perceptions of this study, we carried out a survey on 167 end-users. Majority of the participants found Narrations-2-SQL to be very helpful, and agreed that it could be useful in industry. If implemented on a large scale, the tool may be helpful to many end-users in different domains.

Automatic comprehension of Curriculum Vitæs (CVs) is an Expert Task in Artificial Intelligence. This involves using algorithms to read and understand CVs for the purpose of extracting needed information from them. Performing a similar task on computer programs is known as Program Analysis (which involves program slicing, and semantic analysis). In this paper we have attempted to automatically comprehend CVs by analysing them like computer programs; i.e. slicing them into sections, and performing semantic analysis on contained sections, using a set of rules. We focused on textual CVs with formatting styles. We have presented the criteria used by our slicing algorithm and enclosed preliminary results of a prototype software tool that takes a CV and determines its sections. The algorithm and tool presented in this paper may find applications in automatic shortlisting of candidates, where large number of CVs are being considered.

Sociograms (or Social Network Graphs) have evolved to be insightful tools. These are graphs that depict social relationships amongst individual entities or organisations. Inferences (such as media influence, information transmission, behavioural change, and evolution of interactions across geographical regions) can be made from Sociograms. However, there are privacy concerns around using real life social media profiles to generate graphs for analytics in practice/illustration sessions. In this paper, we present an algorithm for the automatic generation of hypothetical Sociograms. This algorithm generates random hypothetical names as vertices, and random relationships between them as directed edges. Each generated graph is rendered graphically using the Microsoft's Automatic Graph Layout API. Results showing 1,000 distinct synthesised social network graphs can be found at: ***/SynthesisedSociograms. These synthesised sociograms can be useful in describing hypothetical scenarios in instruction or planning sessions, where real-life data is not necessary.

We present an educational game that is expected to improve the teaching of and stimulate the interest in regular expressions. The game generates regular expressions using pseudo-random numbers and predefined templates and asks the player to provide strings that are in the language corresponding to the given regular expression while a timer counts down.
