This paper presents students' performance prediction model based on Machine Learning (ML) classifiers. The used dataset provides three groups of features that may affect students' performance. Features selection approaches have been applied to the dataset. Several well-known ML classifiers including Neural Network (ANN), Bayes Network (Bayes Net), and Decision Tree (DT). Along with the original approach, hyper approach is applied using boosting, bagging, and voting classifiers. The performance of these algorithms is examined and compared using a confusion matrix. Results show that behavioral features have a major impact on students' performance and ML algorithms can be used effectively to build students' performance prediction model. © 2024 IEEE.

Lipids are integral to parenteral nutrition (PN) in all settings where PN is required, serving as a source of energy and essential fatty acids. In addition, lipids modulate a variety of biological functions, including inflammatory and immune responses. Moreover, fish oil (FO), which contains omega-3 fatty acids, has become an important component of modern lipid emulsions. The Lipids in PN Summit involved a panel of international experts with extensive clinical experience in PN use. They assessed the current state of knowledge and developed expert consensus statements regarding the use of lipid emulsions in patients requiring PN. This summit built upon outcomes from an earlier summit, and focused on adult patients in three distinct clinical settings: intensive care units, hospital wards, and the home environment/long-term PN. The summit workflow included identification and appraisal of scientific and clinical literature, the exchange of practical clinical experience, and the formulation of consensus statements. The latter aim to assist healthcare professionals in their decision-making processes in daily practice by providing practical guidance related to providing lipid emulsions as part of PN. This article briefly summarizes the biological effects of lipids used in PN, and then focuses on the rationale for their use in three distinct adult PN settings. Expert consensus statements are also provided, helping to bridge gaps between evidence and clinical practice, and thus complementing formal PN guideline recommendations. There is accumulating evidence suggesting that PN including FO confers clinically meaningful advantages compared with PN without FO, and has a favorable risk–benefit ratio. © 2025 The Author(s)

Clonal Hematopoiesis in Oil Well Fire and Pesticide Exposed Gulf War Veterans

Background : U.S. service members who deployed to the 1990-1991 Gulf War (GW) were potentially exposed to oil well fires and pesticides. In 2016, the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) reported there were insufficient data to associate deployment to the GW with cancer, cardiovascular or hematologic disease. Owing to latency, follow up is needed to determine whether an association exists with cancer. Biomarkers may predict the future risk of adverse health outcomes could bridge gaps in understanding and enhance healthcare for veterans. Clonal hematopoiesis (CH) is such a potential biomarker. We hypothesized that combat EXPOSED GW veterans will have higher rates of CH than combat UNEXPOSED GW veterans. Methods : A discovery pilot study was performed using the U.S. Veterans Affairs (VA) Gulf War Era Cohort and Biorepository (GWECB), a cohort of 1,275 U.S. veterans who served in the GW era. From 2014-2016, GWECB collected survey detailing deployment, exposures, and medical history and a blood sample. The EXPOSED cohort included 30 GW male veterans who reported highest levels of oil well fire and pesticide exposure. An age and smoking history matched cohort of 30 men who did not deploy made up the UNEXPOSED cohort. Targeted sequencing was performed using 1,250 ng of genomic DNA obtained from archived samples and analyzed using Archer Analysis Software. Germline variants and low-quality false positives were removed with filtering. CH and CHIP were defined as the presence of a somatic mutation in a candidate gene with a VAF > 0.5% and ≥ 2%, respectively. Descriptive statistics were used to characterize rates of CH and CHIP between EXPOSED and UNEXPOSED cohorts. Results : Median age was 59 years (range 54-64) in both cohorts. Later deployment to Afghanistan and Iraq occurred in 21 EXPOSED and 5 UNEXPOSED veterans. Median filtered depth of coverage was 7,283.5x (range 3,937-14,101x). 作者： HANDLER, EUGENE The author is the Bureau of Naval Weapons aircraft hydrodynamics engineer. He is responsible for the Bureau's support of Navy water-based aircraft programs and the associated research studies and full scale evaluations of hydro-skis hydrofoil and hull configurations amphibious helicopters and air-towed water-borne vehicles. In 1942 Mr. Handler received a Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship to the Graduate School of Applied Mathematics of Brown University. In 1943 he was assigned by the National Defense Research Committee to the David Taylor Model Basin where he participated in research concerning the underwater trajectories of air-dropped depth charges. Following service in the Eighth and Far Eastern Air Forces he returned to Brown and received a Masters' degree in Engineering in 1949. Mr. Handler was employed at the Glenn L. Martin Company for several years primarily with towing tank tests of patrol seaplanes and the P6M mine layer. He left the Martin Company for the Bureau of Aeronautics in 1954.

There is a very large demand for basic telephone service in developing nations, and remote parts of industrialized nations, which cannot be met by conventional wireline and cellular systems. This is the world's largest unserved market. We describe a system which uses recent advances in active phased arrays, fast-packet switching technology, adaptive routeing, and light spacecraft technology, in part based on the work of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and on recently-declassified work done on the Strategic Defense Initiative, to make it possible to address this market with a global telephone network based on a large low-Earth-orbit constellation of identical satellites. A telephone utility can use such a network to provide the same modern basic and enhanced telephone services offered by telephone utilities in the urban centres of fully-industrialized nations. Economies of scale permit capital and operating costs per subscriber low enough to provide a service to all subscribers, regardless of location, at prices comparable to the same services in urban areas of industrialized nations, while generating operating profits great enough to attract the capital needed for its construction. The bandwidth needed to support the capacity needed to gain these economies of scale requires that the system use K(alpha)-band frequencies. This choice of frequencies places unusual constraints on the network design, and in particular forces the use of a large number of satellites. Global demand for basic and enhanced telephone service is great enough to support at least three networks of the size described herein. The volume of advanced components, and services such as launch services, required to construct and replace these networks is sufficient to propel certain industries to market leadership positions in the early 21st Century.

POVERTY, STATE CAPITAL, AND RECIDIVISM AMONG WOMEN OFFENDERS*

Her research interests include legal responses to fraud in organizations correctional programming and research methodology. Her recent publications have appeared in Women and Criminal Justice and the Journal of Contemporary Criminal Justice. Michael D. Reisig is an Associate Professor of Criminal Justice at Michigan State University. His interests include neighborhood context and policing institutional corrections and applied statistical models. His research has appeared in such journals as Criminoalgy Justice Quarterly Journal of Research in Cromie and Delinquency and Crime and Delinquency. Merry Morash is a Professor of Criminal Justice at Michigan State University. Before obtaining her Ph.D. (University of Maryland in 1978) she worked in the adult prison system as a pre-release social worker directed programs for youthful offenders and worked in the juvenile court as a social worker. Her current research projects include programming to meet the needs of women offenders domestic violence among different racial and ethnic groups both within and outside the United States and assessment of community efforts to respond to crime victimization. She has conducted research with funding from the National Institute of Justice the National Science Foundation and with support from numerous other sources.

Research Summary: This research investigates the effects of poverty and state capital (i.e., state-sponsored support) on recidivism among women offenders. We seek also to determine whether criticisms directed at actuarial risk tools, such as the failure to take into account gender-related factors (e.g., poverty status), have merit. A community corrections sample of 134 female felony offenders from one county in the State of Oregon and in the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota is used to examine self-reports of rearrest and probation or parole violations over a six-month time period. Results from the logistic regression analyses show poverty status increases the odds of rearrest by a factor of 4.6, and it increases the odds of supervision violation by a factor of 12.7. In contrast, risk scores failed to predict recidivism once poverty status was taken into account. Among poor women offenders specifically, we find providing state-sponsored support to address short-term needs (e.g., housing) reduces the odds of recidivism by 83%. Not only do community corrections officers who make available state capital promote women's empowerment, they are also less likely to have clients who reoffend. Policy Implications: Our findings suggest that a commonly used actuarial risk assessment tool (i.e., the LSI-R) does not sufficiently take into account the economic marginality of women offenders. At a minimum, existing tools should be refined or supplemented with other sources of information. During the early stages of supervision, community corrections agencies should encourage their officers to refer and advocate for poor women to receive available sources of state capital (e.g., subsidized housing) to address critical short-term needs, which can improve their economic circumstances, help move them out of poverty, and reduce the likelihood of recidivism. He received his B.S.E. degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering in 1970 and his M.S. degree in Ship Hydrodynamics in 1974 both from the University of Michigan. Mr. Comstock began his professional career with the U.S. Navy in 1974 as a Seakeeping Specialist in the Hull Form and Fluid Dynamics Branch of the former Naval Ship Engineering Center being involved in improving the design of naval ships through the integration of R&D technology advances into the ship design process. His efforts prior to 1980 were mainly aimed at developing and establishing Seakeeping Performance Assessment and Design Practices. Other responsibilities have included numerous ship performance investigations in still water and in the sea environment in support of ship design and specific Fleet problems. Prior to his employment by the Navy he worked in the Structural and Hydrodynamic Groups of General Dynamics' Electric Boat Division. There his activities spanned the areas of Submarine structural and Hydrodynamic Design and Construction. A member of ASNE since 1978. he is also a member of ASE and SNAME and has been active in supporting the efforts of the SNAME H-7 (Seakeeping) Panel the National Science Foundation (NSF). and the NATO Naval Armaments Group 6/Sub-Group 5 (Seakeeping). Mr. Robert G. Keane Jr. is presently Head of the Hull Form Design. Performance and Stability Branch (SEA 3213). Ship Design and Integration Directorate (SEA 03). Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). Adamson, USN, then Commander Naval Surface Forces, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, addressed the participants of the Seakeeping Workshop [1] and established what has come to be a most profound definition of seakeeping as it relates to the U.S. Navy. In those few words he identified the two major issues facing the operator today and provided the focus for all subsequent seakeeping efforts within the design community at the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). For it is these two hues of mission sum and safety at sea which are addressed within NAVSEA, for each new ship design and for ships in the Fleet, in terms of: SEAKEEPING PERFORMANCE — Ability to execute mission in a sea environment, and SEAWORTHINESS — Ability to survive in an extreme sea environment. In the past, the design of ships exhibiting superior seakeeping performance and seaworthiness and seaworthiness has been looked upon by many as an art or an academic exercise. The objective of this paper then is to demonstrate clearly that the ability of our ships to execute their missions successfully and safely in a sea environment is not by chance but by design.
