The paper describes a concept for managing time critical tasks via networks without quality of service (QoS). In this work the design of a solution for the remote maintenance of power wheelchairs across GPRS mobile communication networks is described. The whole system consists of a microcontroller-based module, which communicates with the power wheelchair control system via CAN bus and a server-based remote maintenance software. The two main challenges are the implementation of a highly specialized communication protocol and the design of embedded software with special regard to timing aspects.
The increasing change of the electrical power system caused by the influence of renewable energy on the power flow in the distribution grid effects mainly the distribution system operators. They have to deal with chan...

Environmental modelling workflows are often tedious due to heterogeneity of data sources, types and formats. This paper discusses how a software framework based on Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards may facilitate the workflow steps and improve their flexibility by supporting data access, processing, and decision-making. The software framework is designed based on OGC standards, which can be realized in any modern programming language, to encapsulate processing algorithms (so called fusors) that fuse the environmental input data and run a model based computation. Such a software framework can improve the integration of new data sources into environmental applications as well as the data exchange between scientists who can then focus on the real application problem at hand. The open source model MODFLOW, which is worldwide one of the standard codes for groundwater flow simulation, is taken here as an example data fusor. A further objective of this software framework is to offer the complete modelling workflow as a web service.

In this paper an approach for optimal management of electrical energy storages in distribution grid with high share of renewable energies is presented. Within this approach a multi stage combination of a Storage Scheduling as a long term optimization and a Storage Dispatch as the short term consideration is applied. For this a reference distribution grid with realistic low voltage level structures is applied. The modeling of this reference grid is presented for several levels of the management approach. By means of currently assumed development data for energy generation from renewable fluctuating sources scenarios for the reference distribution grid are developed and the presented approach is investigated in numerical case studies. In conclusion, results of the model calculations are analyzed.

This paper describes the concept of a non-optical acceleration-based gesture recognition system for a low cost and small size remote control for mobile robots which is capable of recognizing more than 5 gestures based on the input signals from a MEMS 3-axes accelerometer and a MEMS 2 axes-gyroscope. The system is designed like a wristwatch and based on a microcontroller module which detects the accelerations and the movements of the user's arm and transmits the results wirelessly to a receiver. The two main topics in this paper are the description of the hardware and the newly developed algorithm used to analyze and classify the detected movements in comparison to the traditional algorithms Hidden Markov Model (HMM) and Dynamic Time Warping (DTW).

This paper presents the embedded control design of the mobile robot system “Quanjo TDS”. Its control architecture combines software control aspects as well as an appropriate hardware layout in an overall concept. Related to this the results of an embedded, adaptive localization module incorporating a slip-free speed sensor are presented, which is an essential part of the modularized control concept.
