This paper describes the concept of a non-optical acceleration-based gesture recognition system for a low cost and small size remote control for mobile robots which is capable of recognizing more than 5 gestures based on the input signals from a MEMS 3-axes accelerometer and a MEMS 2 axes-gyroscope. The system is designed like a wristwatch and based on a microcontroller module which detects the accelerations and the movements of the user's arm and transmits the results wirelessly to a receiver. The two main topics in this paper are the description of the hardware and the newly developed algorithm used to analyze and classify the detected movements in comparison to the traditional algorithms Hidden Markov Model (HMM) and Dynamic Time Warping (DTW).

This paper outlines a new approach of distribution system operation utilizing state of the art communication technology. Based on a generalized architecture that is suitable for real time control incorporating fluctuating infeeds from renewables a market driven approach will be outlined. This approach also includes some reference situations related to optimal distribution network power flow with an open and adaptive objective function. The value of the proposed structure will be demonstrated in reference to a first benchmark application within a real distribution network of a public utility.

For the operation of boom cranes a significant high level of experience is needed to achieve a large amount of handled containers. Therefore, automation systems with anti-sway abilities for boom cranes were developed to increase the handling rate especially for inexperienced crane operators. In the paper, an optimal control approach is presented as an alternative to feedback control systems. After deriving the nonlinear dynamic model, the anti-sway problem is formulated as a nonlinear constrained optimal control problem. The numerical solution method for this optimal control problem is presented. The results are illustrated at measurements for the harbour mobile crane LIEBHERR LHM400.

This paper analyses a flexibility market based approach to prevent grid congestions and reduce costs for feedin management. A method and implementation are presented to simulate this local flexibility market for the district Brunsbüttel in Northern Germany. The analysed approach introduces a regional auction to trade energy in a way that day-ahead forecasted congestions are minimised by coordinating the flexibility potential of the area. To quantify the potential of the mechanism a cosimulation was set up, using the OpSim co-simulation framework. The results show that the mechanism solves 100% of congestions at the cost of 74% of conventional feed-in management. Local flexibility assets, excluding curtailed wind farms, manage to prevent 16% of congestions. The concept seems particularly attractive for large combined heat and power plants. Additional 91 MW flexibility would be required in order to completely avoid curtailment, corresponding to a ratio of 0.7 MW flexibility per megawatt installed wind capacity.

Schedule deviations have become a major issue in Germany's power system in recent years. This paper introduces a fast local intraday market design to address this problem. It shows the concept of a market clearing process for the 15- minute frame between the closing time of the intraday market and the time of delivery. This fast local intraday market shall reduce the schedule deviation of renewable energies and increase system stability. It also introduces a concept of considering grid limitations in the market process. Hence the grid sensitivities of the trading partners on the power grid are considered in the matching process. Therefore, a co-simulation which includes renewable energy providers, the system operator, the market component and flexibility providers is implemented. The results of the simulation show the predicted deviations in a 2025 scenario, the potential for flexibility, the reduction of the deviations and the expected costs.

In this paper we present our work and results in the framework of obstacle avoiding for marine vehicle teams by means of trajectory planning. Based on a team of maritime systems, such as Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) or Autonomous Surface Vehicles (ASVs), which are intended to perform a preplanned mission in a given formation topology, methods for trajectory planning are investigated which guarantee for both obstacle-free paths and formation preservation. The proposed solution contains advanced graph search and trajectory smoothing to generate executable path for the vehicles.
