In this contribution interoperability is considered from the perspective of platforms, which have to manage cross-organisational business processes. A model-based approach for configuring a cloud platform for managing complex processes and their dependencies across different organisations is provided. The approach is applied on using FIWARE, which provides a framework of open source software platform components. The core concept is to extend the open source core data model of FIWARE by using the artefacts of an Enterprise model, describing the dependencies of processes, roles, object data and application interfaces. Based on a given use case the principal configuration was applied and validated. © 2022 CEUR-WS. All rights reserved.

Vision panels in machine tools protect the operator from ejected fragments in case of an accident. Due to its excellent impact resistance, polycarbonate is used as material for such vision panels. However, when exposed to cutting fluids the impact resistance of polycarbonate vision panels decreases significantly. A previous study examined the effect of two different cutting fluids on polycarbonate sheets by impact tests. Both cutting fluids employed were highly alkaline but differed in composition, with one cutting fluid containing phenoxyethanol as solvent and the other dicyclohexylamin as amine. Due to the exposure to cutting fluids, a maximum decrease of 10 % in impact resistance was observed. However, the results were subject to considerable scatter, such that the decrease in impact resistance could be the result of statistical scatter instead of the exposure to cutting fluids. Owing the limited number of test samples in impact tests, a pronounced scatter is a typical phenomenon observed when studying the impact resistance of polycarbonate sheets. The effects of material alterations on the impact resistance of polycarbonate arising from contact with cutting fluids are initially difficult to distinguish from scattering due to the inertia of chemical degradation processes. However, a statistical evaluation permits to draw meaningful conclusions even in the case of pronounced scattering. Despite the advantages offered by a statistical evaluation, impact test results are rarely analyzed by statistical means, leaving the influence of the different cutting fluids and its constituents to remain uncertain. Therefore, the present study examines the influence of cutting fluids containing phenoxyethanol and dicyclohexylamin on polycarbonate sheets subjected to impact tests by means of a hypothesis test. Immersed tumbling is an industrially established process for finishing of components made of metal, ceramic or plastic. In this process, the components are completely surrounded by a wet, abrasive medium, which allows burrs to be removed and surfaces to be polished. In order to gain specific insights into the influence and flow properties of the abrasive media used in this process, numerical approaches using the Discrete Element Method (DEM) with the Rocky DEM software are presented within these investigations. A complete process simulation could be realised by means of a digital machine tool. The immersed tumbling process with cone-shaped polymer abrasive media is implemented by use of a liquid bridge model. The results were validated by experiments with an industrially used immersed tumbling machine tool and for the first time allow sound statements about the contact conditions and interactions of the abrasive media with the workpiece. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.. Due to the specific mechanical and thermal properties of Ti-6Al-4V, such as its high heat resistance, the suitability of certain cutting materials is adversely affected. However, the high thermal conductivity and wear resistance of CVD diamond thick films provide the possibility for machining these materials. The present study investigates the wear behaviour of different CVD diamond thick film specifications at various cutting *** particular, differences in the process forces of 53% due to the CVD diamond thick film specifications as well as deviations in tool stability due to process parameter dependent cracks or wear progress were observed.

The manufacturing sector has witnessed a rapid rise in the importance of energy-efficient operation. For finding optimal set-points for industrial facilities, optimization problems of increasing complexity occur. Key challenges are the leak of derivative information and the curse of dimensionality. For systematic reduction of the search-space by decomposition of the model, a methodology for the inclusion of topology knowledge in the optimization procedure is developed. An implementation of OptTopo (Optimization based on Topology), embedded in a testbed, demonstrates its advantages compared to popular out-of-the-box-optimization. OptTopo could be integrated in energy management software offering advanced set-point control for complex facilities.

Investigation on stereo-ToF data fusion for the inspection of used industrial parts

Optical systems for automated or partially automated inspection have been making important contributions to ensure the quality and functionality of technical products for many years. Often used to monitor the quality of newly produced goods, vision systems also aim to play an important role in identification and condition description of used industrial parts such as aged vehicle components. In this work, a passive stereo system and a Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensor of the latest generation were used to create the desired sensor system. In the first step, the pixel-based information of both sensors was exploited to spatially calibrate the transformation between the left stereo camera and the ToF sensor by forming a 2D-3D correspondence set of detected feature points. To compensate for the resolution difference of the sensors, numerous interpolation points were randomly sampled on the reconstructed sparse surface mesh of the ToF sensor to create the missing sub-pixel information. It could be shown that the fused sensor information led to an increase in incompleteness by 7.81% on average for all components examined. The higher noise in the ToF measurement data in the fill-ins could be mitigated by using an adapted median kernel filtering. The average deviation of the measurement from a reference dataset was 1.30mm for the stereo system, 2.51mm for the ToF system, and 1.42mm for the fused result. The result of this work is promising as the quality of the surface mesh could be raised especially for critical surface areas and the underlying RGB data itself can be used for pixel-wise classification and segmentation.

The increasing demand for renewable energy produced by offshore wind turbines goes along with an increased demand in the production of offshore wind turbine foundations, so called “monopiles”, which are made by joining thick metal sheets. The industrial standard of multi-layer submerged arc welding (SAW) for joining of thick metal sheets is the current bottleneck in the production of monopiles. A possible increase in productivity by the implementation of high-power laser welding in a newly developed mobile vacuum chamber (MoVac) and an electromagnetic root support is the subject of this study. Single run butt welds are performed in flat position on S355 mild steel of thicknesses up to 80 mm using a disc laser system with 1030 nm wavelength and a maximum output of 60 kW. The laser optic is fixed on the MoVac-System which is held and manipulated by an articulated robot.

Driving simulators are used for the prospective validation of technical systems in the automotive sector. The design of simulation environments can affect drivers and should be considered in investigations of driver-vehicle interactions. The aim of this research is to minimize the gap between driving simulators and real car studies by integrating immersive parameters into simulated driving environments. Stereoscopy, surround sound and motion feedback were analyzed with regard to driver behavior and experience and were then compared to data of a real drive from a previous investigation. The authors conducted a study with N = 48 participants performing a dual-task scenario in a driving simulator. Results reveal significant effects of immersive design parameters on gaze behavior and mental workload. Findings provide guidance for an efficient and cost-effective development of driving simulation environments. © 2021, The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In a circular economy for remanufacturing, after each life cycle used products are returned to a remanufacturer for identification, inspection, sorting and reprocessing. Shortcomings and requirements of the remanufacturing market are identified through expert interviews and process analysis. A concept is proposed to enable an improved identification and a more objective inspection by enhancing the working environment and processes of sorting stations. Digitization and machine learning are applied on business data, using machine vision as well as sensor and actor skills of the worker. With an experimental case study on visual object recognition a positive impact on identification and thus sorting could be demonstrated. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.. All rights reserved.

The risk of bacterial inflammation at the interface between implant and tissue exists following the implantation of a dental prosthesis. Nearly half of implants are at risk of colonisation by pathogenic bacteria, which is associated with the occurrence of peri-implant mucositis. This disease can develop into peri-implantitis and thereby trigger a severe inflammatory process. The occurrence of peri-implantitis includes different phases. The initial attachment of microorganisms is only possible by pioneer bacteria, such as the gram-positive streptococci. Since the pathogenic cannot form a biofilm unless attached to a surface, the attachment of the pioneer bacteria is crucial for the onset of peri-implantitis. Due to the flexibility and contact free process, laser material processing is used for the surface structuring of several materials. In the biomedical field, laser-based surface texturing enables the production of implants with improved biological reaction surfaces to positively influence protein adsorption and cell adhesion. This paper presents laser texturing and silver coating to reduce initial biofilm formation on Ti6Al4V. The laser processing includes the manufacturing of LIPSS (Laser Induced Periodic Surface Structures), which enables the functionalisation of the surface. Furthermore, the surfaces are coated with silver to act as an inhibitor of biofilm formation. The implant material undergoes an in vitro culture of the microorganism Streptococcus salivarius in order to determine the biofilm formation applying both techniques. The analysis was realized by fluorescence microscopy with the application of 4', 6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) on the adhered biofilm.
