Vibration assistance becomes more and more common practice for different machining processes such as ultra sonic grinding, polishing, milling and electrical discharge machining. By inducing vibrations at the tool and/or the work piece the processes can be optimized in terms of achievable surface roughness, chatter behavior, tool wear and machining time. This article reports of an active work piece holder for vibration assisted micro milling. An attached real time control circle enables systematically influencing the cutting conditions whilst micro milling and reproducible surface structuring.

This paper deals with the combination of micro milling and laser micro structuring for processing hot embossing dies for microfluidic applications. This strategy permits the advantages of each process technology to be exploited in order to achieve a cost and time efficient process and also to process forms and structures which cannot be manufactured with the single processes micro milling and laser micro structuring. Basic requirements are a high-precision positioning of the single process areas and also a good machining of the parts and structures with the manufacturing processes micro milling and laser micro structuring. The intersections between the different processing areas present a challenge for this process technology.

A novel monitoring system for large, formed and scanned high power laser beams will be presented. Such laser beams are particular used in industrial laser hardening processes. The system design is very simple, inexpensive and easily adaptable. The software makes it possible to identify all standard beam parameters e.g. the beam parameter product, power density distribution, Rayleigh length and FWHM. In addition, functions specifically for laser beam hardening are provided. Some significant applications are in the area of quality and process control, such as the determination of the distribution of the laser beam intensity after passing high frequency scanning systems. Beyond that, the system is the key for monitoring the necessary input data of the heat treatment simulation process. The state of development of a real 3D laser hardening simulation tool is also presented. As a result the theoretical and experimental influence of different laser beam shapes to the hardening parameters is discussed.

By recent studies at fraunhofer IWU Chemnitz basic information about the material flow in the rolling process of high gearings have been obtained, which provide the necessary data basis for a systematic adjustment of variable geometry and technology parameters. To use these data as efficiently as possible for subsequent studies a hybrid approach to this problem was chosen. In that case the combination of visioplasticity and FEM simulation. Such a method already used in many fields of manufacturing technologies has advantages in the field of visioplastic evaluated grid determined deformations and strain parameters according to available plastic theories of Huber, Hencky, Levy or v. Mises, which can be directly applied as boundary conditions for subsequent FEM analysis of the marginal zone of the work piece (gear contour). Results of the first qualitative investigations of this material flow analysis represent the basis for future optimized simulation modeling of gear rolling processes.
