Optoelectronic devices consist of electrical and optical components that are usually manufactured separately and assembled subsequently. To further enhance functional quality and at the same time shorten the production process, a new approach combines both steps by over-moulding the electric components with the lens material using injection moulding. During this process, aligning the electric components (e.g. LEDs) towards the lens geometry is a critical factor allowing for only very small tolerances. The accuracy of positioning the functional components on the printed circuit board (PCB) often does not fulfil the requested demands so that there is a need for compensating misalignment errors. For that purpose, a mould-integrated mechatronic fixture was developed, allowing for measurement-based alignment of optoelectronic components towards lens geometries within the injection-moulding tool. Principle concepts were derived incorporating functional requirements as well as boundary conditions for mould integration, resulting in a 3-DOF mechatronic fixture based on a compliant mechanism with piezo actuators. Model-based dimensioning and design of the prioritized principle as well as capabilities of the developed system will be discussed within the paper. Augmented Reality (AR) has been a focus of research in the field of production for many years with the goal to improve e.g. monitoring and maintenance processes. Although the benefits have been well researched, the AR technology has not been widespread yet in the industry. This article discusses reasons why existing approaches have not become established outside the research context. Following this, solutions are examined for three identified problematic areas. First, this article presents a theoretical method to create use cases for AR applications in the product design process based on the Double Diamond design process model. The second main part discusses which device properties are relevant for a production environment. A catalogue of criteria is presented, weighting properties according to their importance. Third, a discussion is described regarding data integration concepts, problems and solutions for AR design and production use cases. © 2020 The Author(s).

The use of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) structures in rotationally symmetrical components opens up a new field of lightweight construction with great potential for reducing the mass of moving components. Due to the material anisotropy, the machining of these structures can cause component damages. In this paper, the machining results of CFRP shafts conducted by turning and orthogonal turn-milling are presented. The characteristics of the applied processes are evaluated concerning the achievable shape and surface quality of the workpiece. Furthermore, the possibilities for the machining of fits on CFRP shafts are discussed. © 2020 The Authors.

In 2015, the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in response to growing global concern about climate change, resource scarcity and environmental impacts on ecosystems. This agenda also places high demands on industrial manufacturing systems to promote sustainability. Biologicalisation of manufacturing processes can be a promising approach to contribute to the sustainability goals in industrial production systems. In recent years, biomachining has emerged as a field of research in biologicalisation with potential advantages compared to conventional surface treatment methods of metals, such as chemical etching. Surface structuring of metals plays a crucial role in various industrial applications, such as pre-coating preparation, hierarchical structuring, superhydrophobic surfaces and geometries. To assess the environmental impacts of biomachining, this paper focuses on environmental impacts of utilizing the bacterium Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans compared to a conventional chemical etching process with cupric chloride solution for surface structuring of a metal specimen. The study examines the environmental impact of both processes, considering all relevant material and energy flows from cradle to gate for multiple environmental impact categories. In doing so, the environmental impacts of each process can be comprehensively evaluated and compared, and hotspots for future improvement of the biomachining process can be identified. On current lab-scale, the results indicate higher impacts for the biomachining process in most categories compared to the chemical etching process, mainly due to the energy demand for pre-cultivation and preparation of the biomachining solution.

The profitability of companies, especially in Germany, is affected by rising energy prices and increasingly stringent energy legislation. Certification according to ISO 50.001, an international standard for energy management systems, can help to meet legal requirements and increase energy efficiency. This article offers assistance in the form of a methodology that provides a structure for the selection process of an energy management system (EnMS). Considering properties of the individual company, it helps to identify an appropriate software solution. It is applied to a globally operating metalworking company in an example study. Furthermore, the measurement infrastructure in particular is a basic requirement that should not be overlooked in addition to the process of choosing an appropriate software solution. In this context, suitable metering points or criteria must be defined as well as sufficient attention paid to the anticipated costs for acquiring and integrating new measuring transducer and energy meters. The type and number of relevant measuring points must be considered in particular. Discussing these aspects, this article facilitates the process of planning and implementing an energy monitoring. © 2021 DAAAM International. All rights reserved.

Modern production systems rely heavily on data from the machines, processes and other sources. The amount and resolution of the data increases continuously allowing complex models like machine Learning models to be trained and applied in production. All analytics and models that rely on the production data implicitly require a suitable data quality. Central level of data generation and acquisition is the machine level where data from machine and sensors are generated and need to be aggregated. In this paper, we define the Time Synchronization Problem that arise from the different data sources and technical properties of computerized systems in manufacturing directly impacting the quality of Time-Series data. Further, we cluster current approaches and discuss their applicability in data-intense manufacturing. © 2022 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Assembly simulations in virtual reality were used increasingly in recent years. Even though a multitude of solutions exists in the commercial market, research is focusing on improving soft factors like usability and financial accessibility. Therefore, this paper proposes a holistic solution for animation and integration of functionality of a digital manikin in Unity. The solution is using Unity's integrated inverse kinematics system and physics engine. The result is a fully animated human manikin based on the tracking data of a head-mounted display and its two controllers, which is extrapolating motion data for untracked body parts. Furthermore, the solution enables the user to manipulate objects and explore the virtual environment. The solution is validated in comparison to established motion capture methods using joint error analysis. © 2020 The Author(s).

Production lines for electric drives consist of successive assembly steps. The highly integrated topology of the unit can lead to complex faults caused by poor components or incorrect assembly. To minimize the added value of a bad motor, a noise-vibration-harshness (NVH) measurement is performed on an in-line test bench (IL). Following the IL, other components (gearbox, inverter, …) are assembled, resulting in a finished electric drive unit. The final state is again tested by a NVH measurement on an end-of-line (EOL) test bench. A novel approach is presented that combines the results of both test benches into an overall picture, thus creating a contextual environment for the EOL. Depending on the interaction of the two test benches, different implications are derived. An identified defect on the EOL can be further classified by deviations already present in the IL test. Deviations that are not present on the IL also indicate processes between the two test stands and thus increase the ability to correctly classify defects on the EOL. If deviations are present on the IL, an indicator of significant testability is derived. This can be further used to accurately detect defects that were previously only detected on the EOL.

Success Factors for Value Creation in Industry 4.0 – a Comparison of two Field Studies in German Tool machine Manufacturers and Start-Ups

When the term Industry 4.0 was coined more than ten years ago, the anticipated economic growth for this new industrial sector was tremendous. In the meantime, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and start-ups have entered the market with new digital, data-driven products and services. This contribution thus researches success factors for value creation in Industry 4.0 by presenting and comparing two market studies: The first one investigates established original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and their strategies for integrating digital, data-driven products and services. The second study explores start-ups within Industry 4.0. Despite the potential, only a small fraction of OEMs have successfully implemented such strategies, relying on customer-driven innovation, agile operations, mixed teams, and external partnerships. Start-ups in Industry 4.0 are of high-risk, software-heavy nature and rely significantly on venture capital and state subsidies. Start-ups also exhibit higher educational levels among founders compared to traditional start-ups. The findings underscore the need for OEMs to adopt new agile, customer-centric approaches and for further research on integrating agile and classical management methods, especially for SMEs. The work concludes recommending to enhance the academic training of mechanical engineers to include new organizational and managerial topics to ensure employability in the evolving Industry 4.0 landscape.

Everting of tubular net structures based on Shape Memory Alloys

Foldable technical structures can be used to provide a temporary additional volume. In nature, a tubular folding application is the extension of the snail eye. The present study uses this approach. A transformation into a technical application is only successful if the high eversion loads are considered. The study aims to develop a method to realize such structures based on a metallic wire net structure. The tube consists of Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) pieces connected by developed crimp elements produced by additive manufacturing. Additive manufacturing was used to provide a fast and effective way to make several crimp element geometries available to define a preferred variant. In a preliminary building study, the printing parameters for crimp element production were improved. The tubular structure development is assisted by numerical simulation of the eversion process. The SMA material model parameters were identified with experimental tension tests. A feasible way to connect additively manufactured crimp elements with SMA wire was found within a joining method study. Tension tests of the connections protect against pull-out failure. The eversion process was investigated using a high-speed camera system. Multiple eversion of the developed structure is possible without failure. © 2021 The Author(s).
