Faster and more successful innovation processes became one of the most crucial factors for the progress of economy and for more employment within the industrial nations. The innovation process starts with an invention, mostly as a result of basic research, and with assumptions of a prospective marketing, continues with applied research and development, with production and usual marketing and ends with the success in the whole market. Progress in this field needs an optimal R&D-management and technology transfer to industry. Underlying principles, methods and criterias are described, experiences are explained.

The paper describes an implemented system designed to assist the sales department staff in finding a configuration of industrial mixing-machines. The process of configuration is split into two steps: First process engineering knowledge is used to characterize the mixing-machine by the kind of agitator and the number of revolutions taking into account the mixing task;in a second step all components of the mixing-machine are determined with regard to the laws of mechanics. The configuration process is driven by a constraint propagation with integrated dependence control which can handle feedback loops. Since often parameters are needed before they can be computed, the configuration process has to contain feedback loops. These parameters have to be preestimated. Later on they will be checked and probably recomputed. All main decisions in the process of configuration are taken by the user. The system supports the user by exploring alternatives and suggesting standardized and therefore cheap components. Right now the system is tested in the distribution department of the manufacturer and evaluated with respect to its usefulness for the daily work. © 1992, Springer Verlag. All rights reserved.

The inspection of sewer or fresh water pipes is usually carried out by a remotely controlled inspection vehicle equipped with a high resolution camera and a lightning system. Beside the subjective classification of pipe defects trough the operator standard CCTV technology is not suitable for detecting geometrical deformations resulting from e.g. structural mechanical weakness of the pipe, corrosion of the cast-iron material or sedimentations. The fraunhofer institute for information and data processing in Karlsruhe, Germany developed a new Rotating Optical Geometry Sensor (ROGS) for fresh water pipe inspection which is capable of measuring the inner pipe geometry very precisely over the whole pipe length. The developed sensor concept has been applied successfully to fresh water and sewer pipes - the results will be presented in detail. © 2008 IEEE.

This contribution presents the usage of an abstract data exchange format for an automatic configuration of a production monitoring and control system. The automatic configuration procedure re-uses already existing engineering information stored in a standardized and system-independent data format like CAEX. Standard data formats enable - beside the possibility of reaching a transparent engineering value creation chain - the data access of computational algorithms which automatically analyze those data and automatically create engineering results out of them. Standard data formats are a key for the idea of "automation of automation". The concept is exemplarily implemented and explained by means of the configuration of *** (R) and *** (R) using CAEX.

In this paper a new fuzzy based control concept for severely disturbed industrial processes with large dead-times is presented which is characterized by a combination of fuzzy adaptive controllers with a physically based conventional predictive control concept. It has been successfully applied to a complex rheological glass manufacturing process. Practical experiences with the control design optimization, implementation and process operation will be discussed.

The automation of complex industrial batch processes is a difficult problem due to the extremely nonlinear and variable system behavior or the conflicting goals within the different process phases. The introduction of a single multiple-input multiple-output controller (e.g. fuzzy logic (FL) controller) is not useful because of the rather high design effort and the low transparency of its complex structure. A more suitable hierarchical FL-based supervisory control concept is proposed in this paper. It permits the decomposition of the complex control problem into a series of smaller and simpler ones. In the upper level of the hierarchy the FL-based supervisory controller classifies the actual process situation in terms of the available process sensor signals and activates dynamically the appropriate situation specific low-level controllers. The generic concept of the FL supervisory controller which comprises both a FL process diagnosis and a control mode selection as well as experiences with the industrial application will be presented in this paper.

A toolbox for the development of diagnostic systems is described. The information processing structure chosen for TO PMUSS(Tools for processing of Multi-Sensorial Signals) relies on five building stages from sensing to decision inside which application-specific tools can be exchanged easily. This is achieved by using an objectoriented approach. For scheduling a reasoning mechanism is used and therefore all tools conform to a common functionality definition. Three short examples of numerical and syntactic tools explain the functionality of the tool box. Its usage will reduce the development time needed for a new diagnostic system. © 1992, Springer Verlag. All rights reserved.

In this paper, an agent-based software architecture for automated wide area video surveillance systems is presented. The proposed concept is designed for detection and tracking of moving objects across multiple camera views. The surveillance system consists of a decentralized collaborative sensor network with object- and task-oriented architecture. At sensor node level, image processing algorithms are applied for event and object detection. In case of detection (e. g. motion) an agent-based multi-sensor processing cluster is created. Each instantiated cluster is responsible for observation of one object in the scene. Object handover is managed autonomously by the dynamic sensor clusters. The dynamic sensor clustering approach allows adding new sensors without resetting the system parameters, which is a big advantage in large sensor networks. Furthermore, by using the agent-based architecture it is possible to create a framework with an adaptive data and processing load. Additionally, upgrade of system capabilities can be done easily updating or adding new processing agents. The proposed concept has been proved on an experimental video surveillance system at the fraunhofer iitb. © 2008 IEEE.

The use of miniature Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), e.g. quadrocopters, has gained great popularity over the last years. Some complex application scenarios for micro UAVs call for the formation of swarms of multiple drones. In this paper a platform for the creation of such swarms is presented. It consists of commercial quadrocopters enhanced with on-board processing and communication units enabling autonomy of individual drones. Furthermore, a generic ground control station has been realized. Different co-operation strategies for teams of UAVs are currently evaluated with an agent based simulation tool.
