Sustainability and digitalization represent two megatrends that profoundly impact companies, particularly those in manufacturing industries, shaping their competitive advantage and long-term market success. While there is a need for companies to converge both megatrends strategically, practitioners and scholars lack a comprehensive framework so far. This study grasps this urgent call by addressing the question of how sustainability and digitalization can be strategically integrated into the dual transformation of manufacturing corporations. Therefore, we adopt the design Science Research (DSR) approach and collect data from a literature review and semi-structured interviews with expert practitioners. Grounded in a holistic understanding of sustainability, we derive a reference model for the dual transformation permeating all facets of business operations that includes the interdependence and strategic integration of sustainable digitalization and sustainability by digitalization. By leveraging this model, scholars and practitioners can navigate the complexities of dual transformation. © 2024 IEEE.

Augmented Reality (AR) enables the immersive and interactive visualization of digital content embedded in real environments. For some use cases, commercial AR solutions are available and ready to use. But these often cannot be integrated into processes and the IT infrastructure and do not match individual demands. For many use cases, individual and highly tailored AR solutions are needed to fully exploit the potentials. To use AR sustainably and in the long term, companies must be able to individually develop AR applications according to their requirements and adapt and expand them as needed. But due to a lack of expertise and resources, many companies cannot develop AR applications and thus not exploit the potentials of the technology. To change this, we present a modular toolbox for low-code development of individual AR applications for different platforms in the development environment Unity. The toolbox consists of four main components: 1) A high-level guideline;2) A set of project and scene templates;3) Modular functional building blocks;4) Utilities. The toolbox is conceptualized to be usable for all AR use cases. We describe the usage of the toolbox for an exemplary HoloLens 2 application in the context of AR-based product validation. We thereby show the effectiveness and practicability of our results. The modular toolbox can support companies as well as independent AR developers in the development of individual AR applications and so help establishing the technology and exploiting its potentials. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Product management (PM) spans the entire product lifecycle and requires effective navigation through evolving customer demands, volatile markets, and uncertain competitive landscapes. In the face of these challenges, industrial companies must adopt new strategies. Data-driven product management has emerged as a critical solution, enabling companies to transform vast amounts of data, such as customer feedback and usage data, into actionable insights for informed decision-making. However, a clear framework for identifying and categorizing relevant data sources is still lacking. This paper develops a comprehensive taxonomy to address this gap by systematically characterizing data types relevant to data-driven product management. Using the empirical-To-conceptual and conceptual-To-empirical approach based on Nickerson Et Al., we identified and classified 47 distinct data types, grouped into 10 data clusters through cluster analysis. These clusters provide a structured and actionable overview of the data landscape, making it easier for organizations to operationalize data-driven strategies. We also analyzed typical software categories, such as ERP systems, where these data types are stored and managed. Our findings are critical for organizations seeking to improve their data-driven product management capabilities by providing a systematic framework for structuring data and an understanding of crucial software tools. This research fills a significant gap in academic literature and practical implementation, providing organizations with a clear path to use data in product management effectively. © 2024 IEEE.

Established companies are increasingly opening their innovation systems to stay ahead of the competition. In this context, collaboration with innovative and agile start-ups are gaining continuously more importance. In the past established companies often used common corporate venturing methods such as incubators, accelerators, or corporate venture capital for collaboration. Compared to these methods the venture client model is relatively new and was invented by BMW employees in 2014. Using the venture client model, established companies become early clients of the start-ups even it is still a venture to do so. Together they carry out a pilot project to develop a proof of concept and validate it under real conditions. If successful, they enter a long-term collaboration to integrate the start-up’s solution into products, processes, or business models of the established company. The aim of this paper is to sum up the current literature and set a foundation for future research on this topic. Therefore, we conduct a systematic literature review. As a result, we provide a definition of the venture client model, describe characteristics, present advantages from the perspective of established companies and start-ups. In addition, we summarize the state of research regarding strategy, process, and organizational structure and for the venture client model. In terms of strategy, future research should elaborate defining elements of a strategy as well as ways to integrate the venture client model into the corporate innovation-ecosystem. Focusing on the process additional research is needed on a venture client reference process and its integration into the corporate’s core processes. Growing awareness and political regulations increase the pressure on companies to become more sustainable. Manufacturers of technical products in particular face the challenge of decarbonization, as machinery and plants, for instance, have an impact on the emissions of almost all industries. However, information on the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) is often not transparent for manufacturing companies. Digitalization has proven to be a key enabler, as up to 90% of manufacturers’ emissions occur along the value chain, making it impossible to calculate the PCF without data. However, identifying the necessary data and the corresponding IT system is a major challenge, especially for technical products. The Sustainability Data Map supports the identification and structuring of relevant data and its sources for product carbon footprinting across all product lifecycle phases. In addition, the Sustainability Data Map serves as a workshop-based medium to communicate and integrate all relevant stakeholders in the value chain. It is based on an existing data map that has been extended to include the criteria required for PCF determination. As a result, the Sustainability Data Map enables manufacturing companies to create more transparency about the data needed to assess the PCF of technical products. © The Author(s) 2025.

The implementation of systems Engineering (SE) offers a solution for organizations facing challenges from digitalization and increasing product complexity and interconnectivity. However, the implementation of SE company-wide requires a holistic approach that considers human and organizational factors beyond just technology and technical processes. This paper presents a systematic literature review (SLR) that aimed to determine the key principles for the effective application of SE in industrial practice. Through open, axial, and selective coding, 12 key principles were identified. Finally, an application example is given to show how the principles can be used to improve the process of the offer phase in special purpose machinery. © 2023 IEEE.

Start-ups have become a pillar of EC' open innovation initiatives. With the aim of accessing start-up innovation, established companies (EC) use various corporate venturing modes. However, as established corporate venturing modes (e.g. corporate venture capital or accelerators) do not provide direct access to start-up innovation, the venture client model (VCLM) is receiving increasing attention in corporate practice. In the VCLM, ECs become paying customers of start-ups without taking equity - they become venture clients. In joint pilot projects, they apply start-up solutions to their products, processes or business models in order to solve relevant business problems and create strategic impact for increased competitiveness. The literature lists different EC using the VCLM such as BMW, Bosch, Continental, Daimler, Siemens, or ZF. This suggests that the VCLM is only used in EC with tens of thousands of employees, from Germany and in technology-intensive sectors such as automotive, mechanical engineering or telecommunications. On the other hand, GIMMY describes the suitability of the VCLM for any EC. However, in order to develop practical solutions to the challenges of the VCLM (e.g. slow purchasing, legal and IT processes or lack of acceptance of start-ups as collaboration partners), it is necessary to know the users (type of EC) of these solutions. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to characterize the EC using the VCLM with respect to industry, size and regionality. © 2024 Academic Conferences and Publishing International Limited. The digitalisation of industry and especially the IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) requires ever more powerful and smaller devices, such as sensors and actuators. These are more and more battery-powered and communicate in a wireless way. The MID technology enables easy integration into existing systems and machines due to the free shaping. This is particularly important for retrofit applications, where the installation spaces are fixed and can not be *** integration of antennas and microstrip lines on the surfaces of the MID bodies enables a high degree of miniaturisation of these components, as costly assembly and adjustment of the antennas is not necessary. However, it is essential that the dimensions of the antennas and microstrip lines are precisely matched to the matter parameters in order to function correctly. Otherwise, the resonance frequency of the antenna is detuned or the line impedances do not match. This would significantly impair the transmission and receiving characteristics of the IIOT device and thus significantly restrict its operability by reduction of the antenna radiation efficiency. For the designer of the circuit, the challenge is that often the dielectric material parameters of the used substrate material are not available or not specified in the required frequency range. Especially by adding additives and aggregates, the electrical material parameters permittivity, permeability and loss angle tan(delta). The determining of the electrical material parameters is a complex measuring procedure and requires special measuring equipment. In addition to a vector network analyser, special material fixtures and a measurement software tool are required. Furthermore, the material samples must be precisely fitted to the test fixture used. Then the material samples must be prepared, polished flat, in order to avoid measurement errors due to air pockets. This makes electrical material characterisation very complicated and cost-intensive. The
