This study investigates the influence of hybrid laser-arc welding parameters: heat input and preheating on the cooling rates, microstructure and mechanical properties of the welding joint. Samples from API 5L X80 steel with root thickness 14 mm were welded using welding wire MF 940 M. Decreasing cooling rate of welds from 588 °C/sec up to 152 °C/sec, weld metal hardness from 343±12 HV up to 276±6 HV and ultimate tensile strength from 1019.5±14 MPa up to 828±10 MPa and increasing bainite phase term of the weld metal was detected at the increasing preheating temperature up to 180 °C and maximal heat input. The mathematical relations of the input and output parameters were created using linear regression equations. Preheating temperature 180 °C allows increasing maximal welding speed up to more than 3.0 m/min with acceptable welding joint quality.

Selective Laser Melting is an additive manufacturing process, in which the research has been increasing over the past few years to meet customer-specific requirements. Therefore, new manufacturing parameters have been monitored raising the number of sensors in the machines. Consequently, it leads to a bigger amount of data and difficulties to perform manual data analysis. In order to improve the analysis, this paper illustrates a possibility of pattern recognition using a different historical process and sensors data from a SLM machine. The results are evaluated using an intelligent tool for algorithms configuration and data analysis developed at fraunhoferipk.

Binderless-cubic Boron Nitride (cBN) from the company SUMITOMO CORPORATION, Itami, Japan, is one of the most promising cutting materials providing the opportunity for direct cutting of steel with ultra-precision (UP) quality without additional equipment or coating of the workpiece. This work presents the latest development in the field of precision machining of hardened stainless steel with binderless-cBN. In this paper the influence of the feed f and the cooling lubricant on the surface roughness is shown for turning the hardened stainless steel STAVAX ESR (H = 52 HRC) from the company BÖHLER-UDDEHOLM, Düsseldorf, Germany. A surface roughness Ra = 9 nm and Rz = 42 nm could be achieved using binderless-cBN and the cooling lubricant W200SL of the company OPORTET, Duisburg, Germany.

High-precision cutting of hardened steel with geometrical defined cutting edge is restricted due to excessive and random tool wear. For serial production of precision plastic parts hot embossing tools and micro injection moulding tools with high requirements regarding geometrical accuracy and surface roughness are needed. Cutting materials based on cubic Boron Nitride (cBN) are successfully used in macro-machining of hardened steel. In this paper, detailed information about machining hardened steel with micro-milling tools with cutting edges made of cBN are given. An arithmetical mean deviation Ra = 19 nm could be achieved using a high-precision micro-milling machine tool with ball bearing guideways and spindle.
