The mold-making industry faces nowadays the challenge of selecting the appropriate manufacturing technology for machining micro molds, normally made of high strength and difficult-to-machine steels. This selection of appropriate technology shall consider the productivity, the involved costs, the operating times, form accuracy and surface quality. The industry producing micro molds is facing the challenge of choosing from two technologies available: the micro milling and the die-sinking μ-EDM. With regard to identical cavities, experiments were conducted aiming the comparison of the technological limitations for both technologies, micro milling and die-sinking μ-EDM, in respect to form accuracy of parts, surface quality and machining time.

Experimental investigations carried out for this study aimed on developing a μ-EDM technology for producing smallest and finest structures with width of 230 μm and depth of 800 μm into a micro mold made of stainless steel. The main goal was to develop and to optimize the μ-EDM technology concerning the machining time, the tool wear of the electrode, and the form and positioning accuracy of the features. The metrological analysis using measuring distinct devices enabled the choice of the appropriate μ-EDM technology for producing the final cavities. Total machining time below 16 min as well as a tool electrode relative wear below 65 μm could be achieved. The cavity with micro structures could be produced at the hardened steel with respect to the requirements, including the exact size of structures (226 μm width) and precise position of cavity on the workpiece. The die-sinking μ-EDM confirmed to be a suitable technology for producing the cavities with micro-structures in hardened steel.

Computer modelling of 2D drawings is becoming increasingly popular in modern design as can be witnessed in the shift of modern computer modelling applications from software requiring specialised training to ones targeted for the general consumer market. Despite this, traditional sketching is still prevalent in design, particularly so in the early design stages. Thus, research trends in computer-aided modelling focus on the the development of sketch based interfaces that are as natural as possible. In this paper, we present a hybrid sketch based interface which allows the user to make draw sketches using offline as well as online sketching modalities, displaying the 3D models in an immersive setup, thus linking the object interaction possible through immersive modelling to the flexibility allowed by paper-based sketching. The interface was evaluated in a user study which shows that such a hybrid system can be considered as having pragmatic and hedonic value. The configuration and deployment of global production networks, raises questions about the interchange of data and information between varied and different organisations, domains and systems. Standards should be an instrumental part of forming a basis to enable seamless interoperability, yet there is no clear support for global production networks. This paper sets out a reference ontology for global production networks being developed as a basis for interoperability between systems, with the potential for it to be developed as a standard. This paper introduces a new concept for flexible motion planning and control of industrial robots. Instead of a closed monolithic architecture, an open service-based framework is proposed. The services can be run hardware-independent on a decentralized IT infrastructure (Cloud) allowing a fast reconfiguration of control modules and their multiple usage in different tasks. The services can be run on a dedicated PC or on individual virtual machines inside a single computing cluster. The proposed service-based framework was implemented and tested for the motion planning of a robotic manipulator. Effects on control performance, availability and scalability are investigated and documented. © 2015 IEEE.

In our modern information societies, we not only use and welcome computers; we are highly dependent upon them. There is a downside of this kind of progress, however. Computers are not 100% reliable. They are insecure. They are vulnerable to attackers. They can either be attacked directly, to disrupt their services, or they can be abused in clever ways to do the bidding of an attacker as a dysfunctional ***-makers and experts alike always struggle with the amount of interdisciplinary knowledge needed to understand the nuts and bolts of modern information societies and their relation to security, the implications of technological or political progress or the lack thereof. This holds in particular for new challenges to come. These are harder to understand and to categorize; their development is difficult to predict. To mitigate this problem and to enable more foresight, The Secure Information Society provides an interdisciplinary spotlight onto some new and unfolding aspects of the uneasy relationship between information technology and information society, to aid the dialogue not only in its current and ongoing struggle, but to anticipate the future in time and prepare perspectives for the challenges ahead.

Robotic therapy devices have been an important part of clinical neurological rehabilitation for several years. Until now such devices are only available for patients receiving therapy inside rehabilitation hospitals. Since patients should continue rehabilitation training after hospital discharge at home, intelligent robotic rehab devices could help to achieve this goal. This paper proposes a novel multimodal home therapy concept and robot based system for motor telerehabilitation which is currently being further developed. The system is based on two haptic rehabilitation devices i) the Bi-Manu-Track (BMT) 2×1 DOF robotic haptic rehabilitation device with assist-as-needed control algorithms and ii) an enhanced version of the 3 DOF passive Reha-Slide system. The paper describes the technical system setup as well as user centered design aspects.

Microcrack Formation During Gas Metal Arc Welding of High-Strength Fine-Grained Structural Steel

The recent development of high-performance-modified spray arc processes in gas metal arc welding due to modern digital control technology and inverter power sources enables a focused spray arc, which results in higher penetration depths and welding speed. However, rnicrocracks occurred in the weld metal while approaching the process limits of the modified spray arc, represented by a 20-mm double layer DV-groove butt-weld, These cracks were detected in structural steel exhibiting a yield strength level of up to 960 MPa and are neither dependent on the used weld power source nor a consequence of the modified spray arc process itself. The metallographic and fractographic investigations of the rather exceptional fracture surface lead to the classification of the microcracks as hot cracks, The effects of certain welding parameters on the crack probability are clarified using a statistical design of experiment. However, these microcracks do not impact the design specification for toughness in the Charpy V-notch test （absorbed energy at -40 ℃ for the present material is 30 J）.
