This article offers an overview of application areas for knowledge-based systems in development and design. Activities are identified that can be supported consistent with the present state-of-the-art. A concise reference to the state of the art in systems interoperability, Enterprise Interoperability VII will be of great value to engineers and computer scientists working in manufacturing and other process industries and to software engineers and electronic and manufacturing engineers working in the academic environment. Furthermore, it shows how knowledge of the meaning within information and the use to which it will be put have to be held in common between enterprises for consistent and efficient inter-enterprise networks. Due to its thermal working principle allowing an almost force free machining independent of the material's mechanical properties, Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) is a well established production technique for manufacturing micro holes. Especially when machining ceramics, a material group that is predestined for the application within the field of micro technology, EDM is of increasing importance. However, the production of precise micro holes with complex geometries and high aspect ratios is associated with a lot of challenges. High tool electrode wear, a small material removal rate and the increasing importance of flushing at high aspect ratios and small gap widths can be observed during this machining process. The paper shows investigations concerning the manufacturing of micro holes with diameters of around 350 μm in TiN ceramic probes with a thickness of 1 mm by dry-EDM. The dry-EDM micro drilling process with compressed air as dielectric medium is introduced. Additionally, experimental results of a technological optimization of main process parameters are shown, resulting in a reduction of the machining time tero and the relative tool wear ?. The technological parameters were optimized using a design of Experiments method (DoE) by varying the EDM process parameters discharge-capacitance Ce, no-load- voltage u0, ontime ton and offtime toff.

Ultra precision milling with small diamond end mills is used more and more in industry. During the machining process there is to observe extreme wear of the diamond cutting part, partially. Experiments show a more or less remarkable partition of graphite on the surface of the diamond cutting parts after machining. Conditions for the transition of diamond into graphite are high temperature and/or high pressure. In this paper results are shown of process integrated temperature measurements of diamond end mills. Tool diameters are smaller than 0.5 mm and the cutting parts are of mono crystalline diamond. The applicability of the measurement technologies pyrometer, spectrometer, infrared thermography, and thermocouples is proven for the experimental determination of the diamond temperature.

Generative technologies permit today the processing of a wide variety of materials. In the manufacture of functional prototypes, the limits of these technologies are however soon exhausted with the result that compromises need to be accepted. In order to meet the increasing demand of the industry, a new material, technology and machine concept was developed based on printing technology. Compared to standard generative systems where only one material per build process is usable this new technology allows generating parts of different mechanical properties in a wide range.
