Almost 40 percent of the global carbon emissions are caused by the construction and building sector. Additionally, the production of traditional building materials like concrete and steel requires a large amount of energy. The demand for residential buildings is increasing none the less and can potentially be met by utilizing more sustainable materials like timber in construction. However, timber construction is still connected to a rather manual value creation chain and analog information transfer. To make the process more time- and energy efficient, this paper proposes a framework for the value creation system of urban timber construction from the forest to the city. The three-leveled framework, based on the principles of Industry 4.0, connects the urban development planning with the vertical networking of digital technologies and the horizontal networking in the value chain. The framework is implemented to a dashboard using Microsoft Power BI to demonstrate the close relations of the layers. © The Author(s) 2025.

Considering the concept of a Circular Economy, which entails several life cycles of, e.g., vehicles, their components, and materials, it is important to investigate how the respective Digital Twins are managed over the lifecycle of their physical assets. This publication presents and compares three approaches for managing Digital Twins in industrial use cases. For the aggregation of these approaches, a user-centered design approach has been used in the research project Catena-X which focuses on the automotive industry. The results are analyzed qualitatively based on aspects such as data ownership and data sovereignty. It was identified, that all three approaches have limitations and benefits which make them useful in different scenarios. An overview of their strengths and weaknesses is presented to select an appropriate approach In similar setups. The results described in this publication can be used to select the best update approach in data spaces where multiple stakeholders are able to update information on a single asset. © 2025 The Authors.

PrintAssist - a conversational human-machine interface for 3D printers

3D printers are no longer found only in industry, universities or makerspaces but now are increasingly used in domestic settings. Personal fabrication will increase in the coming years, and 3D printing will play an important role in this process. Due to technology and price development, 3D printers are becoming established among casual users at home. However, there are still many hurdles in the use of 3D printers that interfere with their appropriation in everyday life. In this paper, we investigate how chatbots can overcome these hurdles and support onboarding to 3D printing. Furthermore, we explore how chatbots can be used as a human-machine interface and facilitate interaction with 3D printers for both novice and expert users. In a research-through-design approach, we have created a fully functional chatbot that introduces users to 3D printing and helps them perform typical tasks when operating 3D printers. © 2023 the author(s), published by De Gruyter, Berlin/Boston.

The relevance of digital solutions to enable sustainable value creation, the monitoring and ultimately the reduction of the environmental footprint has increased. New information technologies and increased data availability along a product's lifecycle offer more tools to assess product sustainability than ever before. This paper presents how a Digital Twin needs to be designed to help monitor product-level energy efficiency and how such a Digital Twin can be implemented. State-of-the-art research on Digital Twins and their development, lifecycle assessment, and energy efficiency are introduced. There is a lack of evaluated implementations of methodical DT development in different scenarios, especially for the evaluation of product-level energy efficiency during production. Results of a research project with the focus on the development and implementation of Digital Twins are presented. The use case is set within the scenario of the sequential development of a product simultaneously with the development of the Digital Twin. The focus is put on the implementation of an energy consumption prediction and product carbon footprint analytics module as part of the Digital Twin. The development approach is presented and recommendations for the development of future Digital Twins are derived. © 2024 The Author(s).

Due to global and political influence, resilient and versatile production systems are unavoidable. Based on existing Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems there is a growing need for a consistent communication between machines and product design to enable integrated product and production process design. Core aspects are integrating the product design information directly into the production equipment and their feedback into the product design as well as into other phases of the product creation and usage. Therefore, a generalized production description language as well as an architecture for the digital integrated product design and production need to be developed. This paper presents the first results of a use case in the automotive industry. The approach of developing the functional architecture is shown. Several feedback to X approaches were researched in literature and analyzed regarding functional requirements for integration in the developed architecture. The results are the main basis for further implementation within the automotive production. Moreover, the main challenges and next steps are discussed. © 2024 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Product and service creation requires the interdisciplinary collaboration of different stakeholders. In virtual product and service creation these stakeholders generate models and data to describe the product or service over their entire life cycle. For a reliant product creation and optimization, these models and data need to be consistent through all disciplines and life cycle phases. In this publication, a solution-independent functional architecture to foster the digital continuity across the involved disciplines and life cycle phases is described. To achieve it, existing approaches in literature are evaluated and requirements and desired capabilities extracted. An reduced form of the Architecture Analysis & design Integrated Approach (ARCADIA) is used to describe a functional architecture. Consecutively, existing solutions are mapped to the architecture and evaluated for compliance. © 2023 IEEE.

Gaia-X is an initiative to develop the next generation of a secure and federated European data infrastructure to promote digital sovereignty for data exchange to fuel innovations. This paper introduces the basics of Gaia-X, in particular the mobility domain, followed by the federated system and its standards. In addition, a research methodology is presented to help conceptualize and derive requirements for service offerings on a Gaia-X-based data space. In automated production industries, qualified maintenance is important. Planning and executing complex practical maintenance training scenarios on real machines can be expensive. To reduce cost, virtual training simulations in Virtual Reality (VR) are slowly being established in the virtual commissioning sector, but implementation times can be long and costly when each new training scenario needs to be implemented manually. This paper describes the outcome of a three-year research project, which addressed an automated generation of gamified maintenance training in VR based on existing virtual commissioning scenarios instead of manually configuring the machine logic on an example in the automotive industry. With the project partners from the automotive and gaming industry, a demonstrator was created. The result is a transdisciplinary setup guide for three different user types: the commissioner, the trainer, and the trainee. The users are supported with a combination of automated functions and included descriptions to utilize VR without being VR experts. The first user, the commissioner, can generate a VR scene from virtual commissioning and connects them so that the real machine behavior of the virtual Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and Numerical Control (NC) can be used in VR over the virtual Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) like touchscreens, buttons, and other machine parts. The trainer can configure training in this virtual commissioning scene for the maintenance trainee to use for virtual machine training. The demonstrator received positive feedback from key users of the automotive industry and should be tested for their training in the next steps. © 2023 The Authors.

Using traditional benchmarking methods on the environmental impact of enterprises, carbon benchmarking aims to enable organizations to compare their individual carbon footprint with their peers. The insights gathered during that process allows enterprises to identify areas for improvement and make informed decisions about their carbon emissions using best practices from their industry section. This paper presents a systematic study of carbon benchmarking approaches and methodologies for the assessment, performance comparison and improvement of corporate greenhouse gas emissions. In a first step, a series of robust criteria are defined in order to respond to the specific requirements of effective carbon benchmarking, aiming for comparable and reliable results. Secondly, existing frameworks and methodologies for the assessment and performance comparison of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) are explored through a systematic literature review. In a last step, the approaches identified are compared and evaluated by comparison group and scope. In this context, potential gaps are identified and further need for research in the field of corporate GHG reduction methods and approaches revealed. © 2023 IEEE.

The realization of smart-circular Product-Service systems has theoretically promising advantages compared to traditional products. Nevertheless, the sustainability improvement, especially for the ecological dimension is not yet satisfactorily proved. In this paper, the authors examined the current state of research within a systematic literature review with a specific focus on the overlap of the topics: Life Cycle Assessment, Model-Based systems Engineering, Product-Service systems, and Circular Economy. The aim is to analyze the potential of a proactive quantification of the ecological impact in an early stage during the development of smart-circular PSS – the system architecture definition. As a result of the systematic review, 27 relevant papers were identified and analyzed and the findings are presented in a structured way. The main finding is that the current state of the art in this research field still is in the conceptualization stage. In addition, a proactive approach is rare and circularity is not considered to its fullest. Quantified use cases do not draw the system boundaries Cradle-to-Cradle and not every of the 9R-strategies is considered. Furthermore, the potentials and challenges of the revealed research gap are summarized. © 2023, The Author(s).
