Solidification cracking is a frequently observed phenomenon in laser beam welding of austenitic stainless steels and other metallic alloys. Characterisation of cracking susceptibility requires knowledge of the precise and spatially resolved temperature distribution near the solidification front in the welding process. Thermography is a standard tool that provides a qualitative estimate of the 2D temperature field. The general disadvantage of this method is its dependence on the emission characteristics of the measured object. For welding applications, these can vary significantly in the temperature range above and below the melting temperature. For this purpose, we have developed a thermography-based measurement technique using a SWIR camera system in combination with two narrow bandpass filters that use the principle of two-wavelength pyrometry to estimate absolute temperature values. This technique was used to determine the temperature distributions and gradients near the solidification front of laser-welded austenitic steel. The results were validated by other measurements. © 2024 The Authors.

Tool and mould making is one of the most important sectors for production of complex parts with highest economic efficiency. Particularly the milling process is a key technology for the manufacturing of tool electrodes for electrical discharge machining (EDM). Beside copper, graphite is the most industrial relevant tool electrode material for sinking-EDM. According to the state of the art the machining of graphite results in high tool wear in consequence of strong chemical and abrasive effects. Currently, uncoated and cost intensive diamond coated cemented carbide tools are used for industrial applications. High tool costs and short tool life have a negative impact on the economic efficiency of the manufacturing process and increase the overall production costs. To reduce the production costs, the needs for innovative cutting materials and dedicated manufacturing processes are high. The zirconium dioxide-reinforced aluminium oxide ceramic used in this investigation shows a great potential because of the high hardness H, the missing binder phase and the covalent bond. The aim of this investigation is the examination of the application behaviour of ceramic cutting tools during the machining process of graphite. Therefore, dedicated milling tests in partial and full cut were carried out. For evaluation of the application behaviour of the ceramic tools, the surface quality of the machined graphite depending on the wear of the tools was considered. The results show that a minimum surface roughness of Ra = 0.80 µm and average surface roughness of Rz = 6.55 µm could be achieved in first milling tests. Due to a strong sharpening effect of the cutting edge during the machining, the possibility was provided to produce complex components with highest precision and without chipping behaviour. Micro-milling tools, widely used in industrial environments for manufacturing micro- and precision components, experience premature tool failure primarily due to cutting edge wear. In immersed tumbling processes, the cutting edges can be post-processed to gain homogeneous edge radii and reduce the tool wear. However, immersed tumbling processes exhibit limitations in the adjustability of the cutting edge geometry as well as difficulties in the directed processing of main and secondary cutting edges. Therefore, a novel immersed tumbling process using magnetorheological fluids (MRF) is investigated to enable a directed processing method in an applied magnetic field. The focus of this work is to identify a suitable composition of the MRF for an increased abrasive effect on high-speed steels. For this purpose, variously composed MRF samples are blended with abrasive particles and then examined using a custom-designed test bench that replicates the immersed tumbling process. The material removal rate on high-speed steel specimens is determined by optical analysis of the edge rounding of the samples before and after the abrasive process in order to find an optimized abrasive MRF composition with the highest material removal rate on high-speed steels. © 2023 Proceedings - ASPE 2023 Annual Meeting. Due to the high number of influences in production applications, quality fluctuation and deviating results in thermal spray applications are a challenging issue in manufacturing processes. This paper presents a concept for an adaptive process control based on different machine learning algorithms that are utilized to correlate input parameters with output results in thermal spray processes. For that purpose, a test environment was developed, incorporating different application scenarios with various input parameters. During the experiments, a series of measurements was performed, that is used to describe and evaluate the process. The extracted data of the conducted experiments are transformed into features and serve as the data input for the development of machine learning models based on various algorithms. These algorithms offer a prediction of the peak position, which describes the deviation of the programmed application spot, thus offering a quality prediction by utilizing solely the input process parameters. This work provides an approach based on the compared algorithms, that can be applied to create an adaptive process control, by adjusting the input parameters during the thermal spray application process. © 2023 The Authors. Using traditional benchmarking methods on the environmental impact of enterprises, carbon benchmarking aims to enable organizations to compare their individual carbon footprint with their peers. The insights gathered during that process allows enterprises to identify areas for improvement and make informed decisions about their carbon emissions using best practices from their industry section. This paper presents a systematic study of carbon benchmarking approaches and methodologies for the assessment, performance comparison and improvement of corporate greenhouse gas emissions. In a first step, a series of robust criteria are defined in order to respond to the specific requirements of effective carbon benchmarking, aiming for comparable and reliable results. Secondly, existing frameworks and methodologies for the assessment and performance comparison of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) are explored through a systematic literature review. In a last step, the approaches identified are compared and evaluated by comparison group and scope. In this context, potential gaps are identified and further need for research in the field of corporate GHG reduction methods and approaches revealed.

Supply chain issues arising from market turbulences force companies to find new solutions in the short term. Hence, deviations from the ideally designed business processes are inevitable, especially during production planning and control. These deviations result in unforeseen process variants. In addition, process steps of those process variants are often not completely conducted with IT systems and are therefore difficult to trace. Another underlying problem lies in the bias of performance measurement of process variants because each variant aligns with different goals and framework conditions. For these and other reasons, the performance management of process variants presents a challenge. To overcome this challenge, a serious game is being further developed in a research project. The goal is to provide trainings for performance management in a turbulent business environment with the serious game. It simulates the business processes and supply chain issues of a drilling machine manufacturer and serves as a use case for the research presented in this paper. The challenges associated with the performance management of unforeseeable business process variants are derived from the use case. A gap analysis is conducted between the challenges and existing requirements for the development of performance management systems. Based on this, adjustments are proposed to existing requirements and new requirements are being developed. © 2023, The Author(s).

In recent years, the rise in computation and modelling capabilities has enabled first chip formation simulations for wet cutting processes. Currently, chip formation simulations are limited to a small simulation domain around the cutting edge. Hence, vague assumptions of inflow boundary conditions of the cooling lubricant must be made. In this paper, a procedure is shown to determine the boundary conditions of the free fluid jet for different cooling lubricant strategies by combination of Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and meshfree fluid simulations. As a result, usual assumptions of cooling lubricant boundary conditions are evaluated and deviations are identified. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.. All rights reserved.

Nowadays graphite and copper are the most used tool electrode materials for electrical discharge machining (EDM). Especially for roughing operations to machine mould inserts made of steel, graphite allows high material removal rates, with high discharge energies and reduced relative tool wear. In addition, graphite is characterized by better machinability compared to copper, which leads to a cost-effective production of complex tool electrode geometries. To take advantage of the machinability and flexibility in producing complex tool electrode geometries, graphite is also used for EDM finishing. However, in EDM finishing, graphite shows still higher material removal rates but is also characterised by significantly higher relative tool wear compared to copper. This relative tool wear is fundamentally dependent on the material properties and the used process parameters. Therefore, this paper presents an approach for using graphite in EDM finishing operations. A parameter study was carried out using five different types of graphite to machine steel components. Within the investigations, different types of graphite with grain sizes in the range of 1.0 μm 11.0 %. Therefore, the experiments showed a great improvement regarding the relative tool wear for graphite. Ten additional graphite types will be used for further investigations to gain a deeper understanding of the tool wear mechanisms. This will enable the reliable and efficient application of graphite as a tool electrode material for EDM finishing. © 2023 Euspen Headquarters.

To enable resilient manufacturing, production control systems must be able to adapt quickly and flexibly to unexpected changes. Motivated by Industrie 4.0, multi-agent systems offer a promising approach to meet these requirements. This paper presents a method for distributed production control that enables production entities to make optimal decisions regarding capacity utilization and the compliance of delivery dates in real-time despite disruptive events. Based on a multi-agent Markov Decision Process, production entities are modeled as autonomous software agents that can solve Flexible Job-Shop Problems through message passing. Today's demands on technical applications require the precise machining of high-performance materials. Cemented carbide is used as a wear-resistant material in a wide range of industrial applications, e.g. tool and mould making, mobility and medical engineering. Due to the brittle material characteristics and the resulting high hardness and wear resistance, the machining of the cemented carbide is severely limited. Long machining times and high tool wear are remaining challenges at state of the art. A novel approach for the machining of cemented carbide is the application of binderless nanopolycrystalline diamond (NPD) as cutting material for precise turning. Based on investigated fundamental cutting phenomena, within the scope of this work, the application of the novel cutting material was further investigated by comprehensive turning experiments. Turning tests were carried out with cemented carbide samples with a tungsten carbide content of CC = 88 %, a cobalt content of CCo = 12 % and a grain size of dg = 0.5 μm. Prior to the turning tests, the brittle-ductile transition as well as the minimum chip thickness were determined by dedicated spiral cutting tests as a function of the feed. In subsequent turning tests, the influence of the cutting speed, feed velocity and depth of cut were investigated. Process forces were evaluated and specimens were analysed regarding surface roughness and topography. In the course of the investigations, it could be shown that a dedicated set of process parameters enable cutting in ductile regime with great chip formation. Thus, the great potential of the novel cutting material NPD in turning of cemented carbide could be demonstrated. © 2023 Euspen Headquarters.
