For computer scientists around the world, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is not a new topic. Most people use AI unconsciously in their everyday life, for example when they use their smartphones. Since the release of ChatGPT in 2022, AI hit the interest of industry and society. The expectations on AI projects are high, companies hope to reduce costs and increase efficiency by inventing AI solutions in their companies. The aim of this paper was to better understand the char-acteristics of AI projects as well as the differences to classic software projects. We also wanted to investigate what kind of process model and project management framework is most suitable to suc-cessfully lead AI projects. We conducted structured interviews with four AI experts to gain an initial overview. The results provide insights into AI projects and suggest ideas for future research on soft-ware engineering for AI projects. © 2024 Gesellschaft fur Informatik (GI). All rights reserved.

This paper summarizes [KGS23], published in the Journal of systems & software. software Product Line (SPL) evolution affects multiple kinds of artifacts like code, build, and variability model. Only part of these artifacts are relevant to variability. We studied the intensity (frequency and amount) in which developers change variability information in our earlier work. Applying this to the Linux kernel revealed that changes to variability information occur infrequently and only affect small parts of the analyzed artifacts. Here, we extend our previous work to a comparative evolution analysis of four SPLs. We provide a detailed analysis of the individual intensities of variability changes by applying our updated approach to each SPL. A comparison of these results confirms our findings of infrequent and small changes to variability information in our previous study. © 2024 Gesellschaft fur Informatik (GI). All rights reserved.

This paper presents an approach to abstract capabilities of hardware components, such as a robot, and to store the necessary data for accessing that capability in Asset Administration Shells (AAS). It uses an ontology based on the Capability, Skills, and Services (CSS) model, enhanced with the possibility to describe physical relations between components. Capabilities describe abstract abilities realized through technology-neutral skills, exemplified in Docker containers using a standardized interface to communicate. The case study, bin picking, illustrates the system's application and requirements. Two user types are identified: the hardware manufacturers who can abstract and store component capabilities in an AAS, and the user who can load these shells in order to orchestrate the process program. This paper details the system's design, implementation, and evaluation, demonstrating its functionality through the case study. © 2024 IEEE.

A smart energy concept was designed and implemented for a cluster of 5 existing multi-family houses, which combines heat pumps, photovoltaic (PV) modules and combined heat and power units (CHP) to achieve energy- and cost-efficient operation. Measurement results of the first year of operation show that the local power generation by PV modules and CHP unit has a positive effect on the electrical self-sufficiency by reducing electricity import from the grid. In winter, when the CHP unit operates continuously for long periods, the entire electricity for the heat pump and 91 % of the total electricity demand of the neighborhood are supplied locally. In summer, only 53 % is generated within the neighborhood. The use of a specifically developed energy management system EMS is intended to further increase this share. CO2 emissions for heating and electricity of the neighborhood are evaluated and amount to 18.4 kg/(m2a). Compared to the previous energy system consisting of gas boilers (29.1 kg/(m2a)), savings of 37 % are achieved with electricity consumption from the grid being reduced by 65 %. In the second construction stage, an additional heat pump, CHP unit and PV modules will be added. The measurement results indicate that the final district energy system is likely to achieve the ambitious CO2 reduction goal of -50% and further increase the self-sufficiency of the district. © 2023 institute of Physics Publishing. With the ever-rising risk of phishing attacks, which capitalize on vulnerable human behavior in the contemporary digital space, requires new cybersecurity methods. This literary work contributes to the solution by novel incorporation of three techniques: Support Vector Machine (SVM), Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Random Forest (RF). Utilizing NLP for deep analysis of text in phishing e-mails, SVM for strong categorization and Random Forest's decision making by group helps in improving detection. This combination of language and pattern analysis along with group learning builds a fortified system. This approach differs from prior work on a variety of factors such as reliability, security, integrity, scalability, interpretability, transparency, and robustness. Thorough evaluation on a reliable dataset aimed to demonstrate the method's effectiveness, which resulted in 98.7 % of accuracy in detection. This majorly aims at showcasing the potential of ensemble techniques to combat against cyber-attacks like phishing for laying a strong foundation for a secure digital environment. © 2024 IEEE.

Amid rapid industrialization and urbanization, global warming and the urban heat island effect are intensifying. There is an urgent need for rapid and accurate monitoring of carbon storage in urban vegetation to assess and mitigate these environmental issues. While methods exist for estimating above-ground carbon (AGC) stocks in individual trees using deep learning, fewer studies integrate multi-source remote sensing data with these techniques. This study introduces a network that leverages spatial-spectral attention and state-space models, called the spatial-spectral attention state-space fusion network (S4FNet). S4FNet utilizes UAV hyperspectral imaging (HSI) data, light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data, and RGB data to estimate AGC storage in individual trees. This study conducted experiments at two sites, the South and North areas of Shenzhen University’s Yuehai Campus, Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province, China, and compared S4FNet with eight traditional machine learning methods and a deep learning method. The experimental results demonstrate that S4FNet achieves the best performance across all metrics, confirming its excellent capability in predicting AGC stocks using multi-source remote sensing data. © 2024 institute of Physics Publishing. Remote sensing images acquired by satellite sensors are inevitably obscured by clouds and cloud shadows, which obscure true ground reflectance information in those areas. Therefore, to ensure the accuracy and reliability of downstream analyses, detecting clouds and their shadows in satellite images is crucial. This paper proposes a state space model-based cloud and cloud shadow detection network for Sentinel-2 imagery, named SSM-CloudNet. This is the first time that a state space model (SSM) is applied to cloud and cloud shadow detection tasks, combining the efficient feature extraction capability of the symmetric encoder-decoder structure with the accuracy of SSM in cloud feature extraction, and providing an innovative approach to this task. Experiments demonstrate that SSM-CloudNet performs exceptionally well across multiple metrics, proving the high effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2024 institute of Physics Publishing. 3D printers are no longer found only in industry, universities or makerspaces but now are increasingly used in domestic settings. Personal fabrication will increase in the coming years, and 3D printing will play an important role in this process. Due to technology and price development, 3D printers are becoming established among casual users at home. However, there are still many hurdles in the use of 3D printers that interfere with their appropriation in everyday life. In this paper, we investigate how chatbots can overcome these hurdles and support onboarding to 3D printing. Furthermore, we explore how chatbots can be used as a human-machine interface and facilitate interaction with 3D printers for both novice and expert users. In a research-through-design approach, we have created a fully functional chatbot that introduces users to 3D printing and helps them perform typical tasks when operating 3D printers. © 2023 the author(s), published by De Gruyter, Berlin/Boston.

This research study examines the applications of the industrial metaverse in supply chain management. Thus, it reviews and analyzes the up-to-date knowledge along the Supply Chain Operations Reference Model. Therefore, a structured literature review is conducted. We derive six core functionalities of the industrial metaverse in supply chains: visibility and monitoring, prediction, simulation, collaboration, training, and optimization. Furthermore, their presence along the different phases of a supply chain is investigated. Besides the functionalities, the relationship between the industrial metaverse and simulation applications and digital twins is analyzed, and a brief description of possible metaverse architectures is provided. This study additionally derives research gaps within the emerging field of metaverse applications and research and defines paths to tackle them. © 2024 IEEE.
