In this paper we present a new method to trace the flows of phosphate from the countries where it is mined to the countries where it is used in agricultural production. We achieve this by combining data on phosphate rock mining with data on fertilizer use and data on international trade of phosphate-related products. We show that by making adjustments to data on net exports and by estimating weighting factors we can derive the matrix of phosphate flows on the country level to a large degree and thus contribute to the accuracy of material flow analyses, a results that is important for improving environmental accounting, not only for phosphorus but for many other resources. Simulating the dynamics of complex quantum systems is a central application of quantum devices. Here, we propose leveraging the power of measurements to simulate short-time quantum dynamics of physically prepared quantum states in classical post-processing using a truncated Taylor series approach. While limited to short simulation times, our hybrid quantum-classical method is equipped with rigorous error bounds. It is extendable to estimate low-order Taylor approximations of smooth, time-dependent functions of tractable linear combinations of measurable operators. These insights can be made use of in the context of Hamiltonian learning and device verification, short-time imaginary time evolution, or the application of intractable operations to sub-universal quantum simulators in classical post-processing. © 2024, CC BY.

Existing fair exchange protocols usually neglect consideration of cost when assessing their fairness. However, in an environment with non-negligible transaction cost, e.g., public blockchains, high or unexpected transaction cost might be an obstacle for wide-spread adoption of fair exchange protocols in business applications. For example, as of 2021-12-17, the initialization of the FairSwap protocol on the Ethereum blockchain requires the selling party to pay a fee of approx. 349.20 USD per exchange. We address this issue by defining cost fairness, which can be used to assess two-party exchange protocols including implied transaction cost. We show that in an environment with non-negligible transaction cost where one party has to initialize the exchange protocol and the other party can leave the exchange at any time cost fairness cannot be achieved.

software and system development is complex and diverse, and a multitude of development approaches is used and combined with each other to address the manifold challenges companies face today. To study the current state of the practice and to build a sound understanding about the utility of different development approaches and their application to modern software system development, in 2016, we launched the HELENA initiative. This paper introduces the 2nd HELENA workshop and provides an overview of the current project state. In this paper an air-cooled 11 kW / 800 V off-board charger with a target power density of 2.2 kW / liter (36 W/in3) is presented. A soft-switched silicon-carbide (SiC)-based power electronic is utilized operating at a high switching frequency of 1 MHz. Thus, the volume of the required transformer for galvanic isolation is considerably reduced. For inductive component design novel low-loss power ferrite materials are applied which are optimized to operate at high frequencies. Objective: The European Health Data Space (EHDS) shapes the digital transformation of healthcare in Europe. The EHDS regulations will also accelerate the use of health data for research, innovation, policy-making, and regulatory activities for secondary use of data (known as EHDS2). The Integration of heterogeneous Data and Evidence towards Regulatory and HTA Acceptance (IDERHA) project builds one of the first pan-European health data spaces in alignment with the EHDS2 requirements, addressing lung cancer as a *** and Methods: In this study, we conducted a comprehensive review of the EHDS regulations and technical requirements for EHDS2. Mainly utilizing the results of the Joint Action Towards the European Health Data Space (TEHDAS) project to identify the framework of IDERHA’s alignment with EHDS. We also conducted an internal webinar and an external workshop with EHDS experts to share expertise on the EHDS requirements and ***: We identified the minimum-set of requirements for aligning IDERHA infrastructure with the planned EHDS regulations, including user journey, concepts, terminologies, and standards. The future IDERHA framework (i.e., platform architecture, standardization approaches, documentation, etc.) will be developed ***: The IDERHA's alignment plan with EHDS2 necessitates the implementation of three categories of standardization for: data discoverability (DCAT-AP), enabling semantics interoperability (OMOP), and health data exchange (DICOM and FHIR). The main challenge is that some standards are still being refined, e.g., the extension of the DCAT-AP (HealthDCAT-AP). Additionally, extensions to the OHDSI OMOP CMD for representing the Patient-Generated Health Data are still needed. It is challenging to verify that the planned security mechanisms are actually implemented in the software. In the context of model-based development, the implemented security mechanisms must capture all intended security properties that were considered in the design models. Assuring this compliance manually is labor intensive and can be error-prone. This work introduces the first semi-automatic technique for secure data flow compliance checks between design models and code. We develop heuristic-based automated mappings between a design-level model (SecDFD, provided by humans) and a code-level representation (Program Model, automatically extracted from the implementation) in order to guide users in discovering compliance violations, and hence, potential security flaws in the code. These mappings enable an automated, and projectspecific static analysis of the implementation with respect to the desired security properties of the designmodel. TABSOLAR^Ⓡ elements are novel (solar) thermal components made from ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) which can be used as designable glazed or unglazed façade cladding elements or thermo-active building systems for heating and/or cooling. They are produced with an innovative production technology which is developed in a current research project together with appropriate system concepts. In order to simplify the system design process and visualize possible TABSOLAR^Ⓡ façades on site, new software tools are being developed. Finally, a demonstration façade will be installed on a renovated two-family residential building. The ongoing interactive design process of this first use case is an important part of the project and the overall TABSOLAR^Ⓡ concept. © 2022

Context: Contemporary software development is typically conducted in dynamic, resource-scarce environments that are prone to the accumulation of technical debt. While this general phenomenon is acknowledged, what remains unknown is how technical debt specifically manifests in and affects software processes, and how the software development techniques employed accommodate or mitigate the presence of this debt. Objectives: We sought to draw on practitioner insights and experiences in order to classify the effects of agile method use on technical debt management, given the popularity and perceived success of agile methods. We explore the breadth of practitioners' knowledge about technical debt;how technical debt is manifested across the software process;and the perceived effects of common agile software development practices and processes on technical debt. In doing so, we address a research gap in technical debt knowledge and provide novel and actionable managerial recommendations. Method: We designed, tested and executed a multi-national survey questionnaire to address our objectives, receiving 184 responses from practitioners in Brazil, Finland, and New Zealand. Results: Our findings indicate that: 1) Practitioners are aware of technical debt, although, there was under utilization of the concept, 2) Technical debt commonly resides in legacy systems, however, concrete instances of technical debt are hard to conceptualize which makes it problematic to manage, 3) Queried agile practices and processes help to reduce technical debt;in particular, techniques that verify and maintain the structure and clarity of implemented artifacts (e.g., Coding standards and Refactoring) positively affect technical debt management. Conclusions: The fact that technical debt instances tend to have characteristics in common means that a systematic approach to its management is feasible.
