Emergencies often happen in a random and unexpected way, and operational forces must take immediate actions to reduce damages to the affected properties and people. Contextual information provides emergency response teams with an overview of the ongoing emergency and allows better decision making, such as the coordination of operational forces and resources provisioning. In this paper, we present the Emergency State Builder (ESB), acentral component we designed to aggregate contextual information about emergencies from multiple data sources with emphasis on fires, explosions, gas leaks and environmental damage incidents. The ESB is our answer to the challenge and providing timely, reliable and relevant contextual information to other components of a emergency management platform, called RESCUER, and, ultimately, to the emergency response teams. To illustrate the applicability of this work, we present how the RESCUER Public Communication module (RESCUER News) benefited from the information provided by ESB.

We demonstrate that I-V curves with bypass diodes in forward bias can be useful in learning the heterogeneity in PV modules. In the laboratory-based experiments, we show that heterogeneity in a PV module can be detected from “step” IV curves that are collected under non-uniform irradiance. On the other hand, heterogeneous cell performance can lead to bypassing even under uniform irradiance. This hypothesis was tested using a fabricated 4-cell mini-module with cells that were engineered to have highly heterogeneous front contact resistivity and a SPICE-based circuit model. We find good agreement between the experimentally determined curve and simulations. We illustrate a technique for automatically classifying and analyzing massive real-world I-V curves and for gaining insights into the performance of PV modules. By classifying 3.7 million I-V curves, we demonstrate the occurrence of “step” I-V curves under two irradiance conditions: under non-uniform irradiance condition, mirror augmented PV module in Cleveland, Ohio; and under uniform irraidance condition at the Negev Desert, Israel, Gran Canaria, Spain and Mount Zugspitze, Germany. Under the uniform irradiance conditions, we found that the percentage of “step” I-V curves in all three I-V curve types gradually increase over time. This indicates the electrical characteristics within a PV module change from homogeneous to heterogeneous. Since the “step” I-V curves have a lower maximum power and a lower fill factor than normal I-V curves at the same irradiance condition, the heterogeneity in I-V module directly cause power degradation.

Historically busbar pull tests have been used as a measure of metal-silicon adhesion for silicon solar cells, however such measurements cannot be easily applied to evaluate finger adhesion and the propensity of metal fingers to peel. Finger adhesion will be increasingly important as the width of fingers decrease and busbars are effectively removed from the cell metallization. In this paper we correlate metal-plated finger dislodgement measurements, obtained using a stylus-based metallization testing tool, and busbar pull test forces, with nanoindentation measurements of the Young's modulus in order to determine key determinants of strong finger adhesion. It is proposed that metal fingers with a higher Young's modulus dislodge at lower stylus impact forces because the energy associated with the impact is less easily dissipated along the fingers and consequently remains more focused on the impact location causing not only finger dislodgement but also more extensive finger peeling. It is shown how plating rate, chemistry, grid geometry and post-plating annealing can all contribute to plated metal finger adhesion, therefore necessitating an understanding of these factors for reliable plated metallization. © 2017 IEEE.

Lead telluride (PbTe) thin films have been deposited on SiO 2 substrate using thermal evaporation method. The structure of the films was found to have a face-centered cubic (fcc) with predominant grain growth in the (200) direction for both as-deposited and annealed samples up to 350 °C in vacuum for 1 h. The in-plain electrical resistivity and Hall measurements via van der Pauw method as a function of annealed temperatures were measured. It was found that increasing the annealing temperature led to increase in grain size, which in turn caused decrease of electrical resistivity and increase of Seebeck coefficient. The high power factor of 141.0 μWm -1 K -2 was obtained for the annealed samples at 350 °C in vacuum for 1 h.

We present a field-tested miniaturized spectroscopic CO 2 sensor which is based on the photoacoustic effect. The sensor is developed for automotive applications and considers the requirements for the usage in vehicles. The sensor measures two measurement ranges simultaneously: The monitoring of the indoor air quality and the detection of possible leakages of the coolant in CO 2 air-conditioning systems. The sensor consists of a miniaturized innovative photoacoustic sensor unit with integrated electronics. The sensor was characterized in detail in laboratory and the capability for automotive applications was proven in field measurements in a test car. Furthermore the potential for market entry is discussed.

Group formation and evolution are prominent topics in social contexts. This paper focuses on the analysis of group evolution events in networks of face-to-face proximity. We first analyze statistical properties of group evolution, e.g., individual activity and typical group sizes. After that, we define a set of specific group evolution events. These are analyzed in the context of an academic conference, where we provide different patterns according to phases of the conference. Specifically, we investigate group formation and evolution using real-world data collected at the LWA 2010 conference utilizing the Conferator system, and discuss patterns according to different phases of the conference. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2016.

This paper presents active single pole double throw (SPDT) switches, based on a novel compact transistor unit cell, working in the D-Band (110-170GHz) frequency range. Two switches for the transmit- and receive side were designed and manufactured using a GaAs mHEMT process. The unit cell consists of the integration of a common-gate stage for loss compensation and a shunt-stage to achieve high isolation. On-wafer measurement results of the processed monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) SPDT switches show a maximum gain of 3.2dB and 3.3dB with 3dB bandwidths of 47GHz and 38.7GHz, respectively. Within the 3dB bandwidth the isolation of both switches is higher than 21.5dB.

Detection of Gaseous Ethanol by the Use of Ambient Temperature Platinum Catalyst

An ethanol sensor system is build and tested by means of a platinum in-line catalytic converter on ambient temperature, which acts as a zero reference with an electrochemical sensor, sensitive to ethanol. The system is selective to ethanol and proposed to measure ethanol gas concentrations from fruit. The system's performance was investigated regarding sensitivity and cross sensitivity for several volatile organic compounds (VOCs) commonly emitted by fruit (e.g. apples). The ethanol gas sensor system was tested with fruit samples in a test facility close to a storage environment.
