The automotive industry faces three major challenges-shortage of fossil fuels, politics of global warming and rising competition. In order to remain competitive companies have to develop more efficient and alternative fuel vehicles. Out of these challenges new cooperation models become inevitable. The development of complex products like automobiles claims skills of various disciplines e.g. engineering, IT. Furthermore, these skills are spread all over various companies within the supply chain and beyond. Hence, supporting IT systems for collaborative, innovative work is absolutely essential. Interdisciplinary and interorganizational development has new demands on information systems. These demands are not well analyzed at the moment and therefore, existing collaboration platforms cannot address them. In order to determine these new requirements and show the gap to existing collaboration platform we performed a case study. In this case study, we analyze the research campus "Active Research Environment for the Next Generation of Automobiles" (ARENA2036). It is a is a new cooperation form, where diverse partners from the industry, research institutes and universities elaborate collaboratively future topics in the field of production and light weight construction under "one single roof". We focus on the special needs of the interdisciplinary, interorganizational partners. The requirements were polled by a questionnaire. About 80 percent of the active research workers in ARENA2036 answered the questionnaire. By the answers we can identify the special needs and also role profiles of the collaborators. The resulting role profiles specify the personal requirements. These are used for an evaluation of existing information platforms. The deficits between the offered features and the demands of the partners, as well as new technologies supporting the individual needs of users are the foundation for the information system concept for ARENA2036. In recent years, the concept of cloud computing has seen a significant growth. The spectrum of available services covers most, if not all, aspects needed in existing business processes, allowing companies to outsource large parts of their IT infrastructure to cloud service providers. While this prospect might offer considerable economic advantages, it is hindered by concerns regarding information security as well as compliance issues. Relevant regulations are imposed by several sources, like legal regulations or standards for information security, amounting to an extend that makes it difficult to identify those aspects relevant for a given company. In order to support the identification of relevant regulations, we developed an approach to represent regulations in the form of ontologies, which can then be used to examine a given system for compliance requirements. Two-phase flow pattern measurements with a wire mesh sensor in a direct steam generating solar thermal collector

At Industrial Solar’s test facility in Freiburg (Germany), two phase flow patterns have been measured by using a wire mesh sensor from Helmholtz Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR). Main purpose of the measurements was to compare observed two-phase flow patterns with expected flow patterns from models. The two-phase flow pattern is important for the design of direct steam generating solar collectors. Vibrations should be avoided in the peripheral piping, and local dry-outs or large circumferential temperature gradients should be prevented in the absorber tubes. Therefore, the choice of design for operation conditions like mass flow and steam quality are an important step in the engineering process of such a project. Results of a measurement with the wire mesh sensor are the flow pattern and the plug or slug frequency at the given operating conditions. Under the assumption of the collector power, which can be assumed from previous measurements at the same collector and adaption with sun position and incidence angle modifier, also the slip can be evaluated for a wire mesh sensor measurement. Measurements have been performed at different mass flows and pressure levels. Transient behavior has been tested for flashing, change of mass flow, and sudden changes of irradiation (cloud simulation). This paper describes the measurements and the method of evaluation. Results are shown as extruded profiles in top view and in side view. Measurement and model are compared. The tests have been performed at low steam quality, because of the limits of the test facility. Conclusions and implications for possible future measurements at larger collectors are also presented in this paper.

Miniaturized Photoacoustic Carbon Dioxide Sensor with Integrated Temperature Compensation for Room Climate Monitoring

A miniaturized photoacoustic spectroscopic gas sensor for room climate monitoring is presented with the measurement range of 0 –5000 ppm. The sensor consists of an innovative photoacoustic detection unit with an integrated mobile phone microphone as pressure sensor. As IR-source a broadband thermal emitter is used. The emitter is modulated with 13 Hz at a maximum temperature of about 750 °C. An electronic unit with a microcontroller on a 3D-PCB design has been developed. The sensor reaches a resolution better than 50 ppm CO 2 . A detailed characterization of the setup has been carried out. An integrated temperature compensation is realized to improve the sensor performance under varying environmental conditions. The potential for further miniaturization and the realization as a low-cost mass market sensor is shown.

Eco-innovation research pays increasing attention to business models and their contribution to the diffusion of environmental technology into socio-technical systems. The extent to which a business model hampers or promotes certain types of eco-innovations remains an open question. In order to shed light on this issue, the authors develop a conceptual framework to show how a specific type of business model (Product-Service systems) could be applied to the context of the maritime industry. With a focus on the Danish maritime industry, the case study addresses two questions: Which business models are being used to develop, install and service the ballast water treatment technology? And, How can these business models add value to the ballast water treatment systems in the market? The case shows that different business models are applied depending on whether the installation is on new or retrofitted vessels. Both installation and operation stages of ballast water treatment systems provide opportunities for collaboration among stakeholders. Based on the Eco-costs/Value Ratio model, the authors perform an analysis of on-board and port-based ballast water treatment systems with the aim to propose a possible product-service system. These results suggest that port-based systems have the highest potential for eco-efficient value creation and a possible product-service system can be designed for this kind of technology. The article highlights the point that authorities need to improve regulations to stimulate port-based ballast water treatment systems rather than on-board ballast management systems. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Fusion on track level is desirable for automotive perceptions systems since it enables the use of distributed architectures and communication networks with limited bandwidth. In contrast to fusion of memoryless inputs, input tracks are subject to various correlations, violating the uncorrelated input assumption of standard linear estimators. This paper presents an overview of approaches to deal with correlated inputs together with an evaluation of the performance, with respect to state estimation accuracy, of three standard fusion methods for track fusion. The selection is restricted to methods with low computational demands and compatible with inputs from vehicle integrated sensor modules. All three methods perform the tested tasks well. The results show the advantages and drawbacks of the three architectures for various scenarios and that a final architectural decision should account for more parameters.

Models of quantum systems on curved space-times lack sufficient experimental verification. Some speculative theories suggest that quantum properties, such as entanglement, may exhibit entirely different behavior to purely classical systems. By measuring this effect or lack thereof, we can test the hypotheses behind several such models. For instance, as predicted by Ralph and coworkers [T C Ralph, G J Milburn, and T Downes, Phys. Rev. A, 79(2):22121, 2009;T C Ralph and J Pienaar, New Journal of Physics, 16(8):85008, 2014], a bipartite entangled system could decohere if each particle traversed through a different gravitational field gradient. We propose to study this effect in a ground to space uplink scenario. We extend the above theoretical predictions of Ralph and coworkers and discuss the scientific consequences of detecting/failing to detect the predicted gravitational decoherence. We present a detailed mission design of the European Space Agency's (ESA) Space QUEST (Space - Quantum Entanglement Space Test) mission, and study the feasibility of the mission scheme. The configuration and deployment of global production networks, raises questions about the interchange of data and information between varied and different organisations, domains and systems. Standards should be an instrumental part of forming a basis to enable seamless interoperability, yet there is no clear support for global production networks. This paper sets out a reference ontology for global production networks being developed as a basis for interoperability between systems, with the potential for it to be developed as a standard. Electric vehicles can potentially be the best means of transportation for improving air quality, provided that they are powered by electricity from natural gas or wind, water or solar power. In this paper we describe a simple cooperative algorithm that exploits the energy management units of Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) to absorb the expected forthcoming energy available from renewable sources. The proposed approach bridges the gap between mobility patterns and power grid constraints, and allows to prevent green energy from being wasted while at the same time reducing the complexity burden of the power grid to charge unexpected loads of electric vehicles. Simulation results are given to show the efficacy of the proposed method.

In recent years intense laser pulses have found applications in various industrial and scientific areas. Significant progress has been made in scaling the energy of the pulses as well as the average power. However, different amplification schemes have been pushed to their specific limits, caused by detrimental nonlinear effects, by damage or by the occurrence of thermo-optical effects. New concepts have to be considered to address these issues and to enable new application fields. In that context, I will review the basics and achievements of coherent combination of amplified femtosecond pulses, a concept which has already out-performed single aperture femtosecond laser systems and which allows for a scaling to unprecedented performance levels, i.e. the combination of highest peak power (Petawatt) and highest average power (Megawatt). © 2015 IEEE.
