Electric vehicles can potentially be the best means of transportation for improving air quality, provided that they are powered by electricity from natural gas or wind, water or solar power. In this paper we describe a simple cooperative algorithm that exploits the energy management units of Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) to absorb the expected forthcoming energy available from renewable sources. The proposed approach bridges the gap between mobility patterns and power grid constraints, and allows to prevent green energy from being wasted while at the same time reducing the complexity burden of the power grid to charge unexpected loads of electric vehicles. Simulation results are given to show the efficacy of the proposed method.

In recent years intense laser pulses have found applications in various industrial and scientific areas. Significant progress has been made in scaling the energy of the pulses as well as the average power. However, different amplification schemes have been pushed to their specific limits, caused by detrimental nonlinear effects, by damage or by the occurrence of thermo-optical effects. New concepts have to be considered to address these issues and to enable new application fields. In that context, I will review the basics and achievements of coherent combination of amplified femtosecond pulses, a concept which has already out-performed single aperture femtosecond laser systems and which allows for a scaling to unprecedented performance levels, i.e. the combination of highest peak power (Petawatt) and highest average power (Megawatt). © 2015 IEEE.

In this paper, the practicality of resistivity measurement as nondestructive examination (NDE) technologies for Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) was considered through a study of CFRP conductivity's dependences on a mechanical strain, applied to a sample. Therefore, a reliable technique for electrical connection of CFRP was developed and proofed during tensile tests.

In recent years fibre-reinforced polymers (FRPs) gained importance in a wider field of application due to such favourable properties as low mass and tailorable mechanical strength. However, water penetrating into the lightweight material can lead to a loss of shear strength and finally to a collapse of the whole mechanical structure. Consequently, the integration of humidity sensors into compound materials is able to promote the reliability via online condition monitoring. An innovative concept is the use of ceramics-polymer-composites, which are well suited for the integration into lightweight structures during inline production. Composite and polyimide based humidity sensors have been manufactured by flexographic printing and spin-coating processes. A 5- fold increase in sensor’s capacity related to a humidity change from 10 to 80% r.h. manifests the outstanding sensitivity of manufactured composite sensors. In addition, FRP-integrated polyimide sensors showed a significant response to water penetration, whereby the capability of condition monitoring could be confirmed. © (2015) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

This paper introduces a new concept for flexible motion planning and control of industrial robots. Instead of a closed monolithic architecture, an open service-based framework is proposed. The services can be run hardware-independent on a decentralized IT infrastructure (Cloud) allowing a fast reconfiguration of control modules and their multiple usage in different tasks. The services can be run on a dedicated PC or on individual virtual machines inside a single computing cluster. The proposed service-based framework was implemented and tested for the motion planning of a robotic manipulator. Effects on control performance, availability and scalability are investigated and documented. © 2015 IEEE.

Technical debt is a metaphor that describes the effect of immature artefacts in software development. One of its types is documentation debt, which can be identified by locating missing, inadequate or incomplete artefacts in software projects. Nowadays, we can observe more organizations using agile methods to support their activities. In particular, the use of user stories reduces the focus on requirement specification tasks and, as a consequence, creates difficulties that need to be overcame by the development team. In order to investigate these difficulties and assess whether they create a favourable scenario for incurring documentation debt, this paper presents the results of a literature review and an exploratory study. The results from both studies allowed us to identify a list of causes that can lead the development team to incur documentation debt when working with agile requirements. This is an important step in order to manage the technical debt from a preventive perspective.

Atomic layer deposition (ALD), a gas-phase thin film deposition technique based on repeated, self-terminating gas-solid reactions, has become the method of choice in semiconductor manufacturing and many other technological areas for depositing thin conformal inorganic material layers for various applications. ALD has been discovered and developed independently, at least twice, under different names: atomic layer epitaxy (ALE) and molecular layering. ALE, dating back to 1974 in Finland, has been commonly known as the origin of ALD, while work done since the 1960s in the Soviet Union under the name "molecular layering" (and sometimes other names) has remained much less known. The virtual project on the history of ALD (VPHA) is a volunteer-based effort with open participation, set up to make the early days of ALD more transparent. In VPHA, started in July 2013, the target is to list, read and comment on all early ALD academic and patent literature up to 1986. VPHA has resulted in two essays and several presentations at international conferences. This paper, based on a poster presentation at the 16th International Conference on Atomic Layer Deposition in Dublin, Ireland, 2016, presents a recommended reading list of early ALD publications, created collectively by the VPHA participants through voting. The list contains 22 publications from Finland, Japan, Soviet Union, United Kingdom, and United States. Up to now, a balanced overview regarding the early history of ALD has been missing;the current list is an attempt to remedy this deficiency. © 2016 Author(s).

Effective and economic storage solutions have an important role to enable Solar Thermal Electricity plants (STE) to generate dispatchable power. A thermal storage can increase the value of STE by providing firm electricity in times of peak load or ancillary services. Latent storages are suited optimally for direct steam generating STE systems: due to the isothermal behavior of the phase change materials (PCM) during melting /crystallization, exergy losses during storage charging/discharging are minimized. Up to now latent heat storages are, due to technical and economic issues, not used commercially in STE systems. The PCM have a very low heat conductivity – therefore a sophisticated heat exchanger design is needed to build such storages with sufficient charging/discharging power. An innovative storage concept, uses a screw heat exchanger to transport the PCM from a cold to a hot tank or vice versa during phase change. This concept separates heat exchange and storage *** concepts do not have this ability. In annual yield calculations the use of this heat exchanger as part of a thermal storage in a 50 MW el direct steam generating solar thermal power plant has been assessed. After setting up of a cost structure, the respective levelised cost of electricity (LCOE) have been used as comparison criterion for two storage systems with different designs. It can be shown, that a storage system with three storage tanks yields lower LCOE than one with two storage tanks. There is further potential for cost reductions, such as the optimization of the heat exchanger area and the temperature difference between the heat transfer fluid and the PCM.
