Goal definitions and developments are challenging in large-scale projects, because of the different expertise and skills of the stakeholders. Development often fails its intended goal because of misunderstandings and unclear definitions and descriptions during the planning phase. The paper describes a novel approach to collecting requirements and defining development plans by provisioning a guideline which informs what has to be done, when and in what form. The User Case Requirement Analysis model was applied in the large-scale European project FUPOL during the development of a Social Media Analysis System. Based on this a successful task-based evaluation could be performed that shows the benefit of the model and the software.

This paper proposes a new model of asymmetric three-phase three legged transformers for the simulation of transient operation. In the current literature, several models yield incomplete and inaccurate results, both in the steady-state and transient operations. Among all these models, the idea of using a PI model [5] seemed the most promising. We have improved the model by taking into account the fast and very fast electromagnetic transients. An analysis is performed on over-current and overvoltage in the unbalanced three-phase asymmetrical transient behavior. The simulation results are compared with experimental ones to validate the suggested model.

One reason for heat losses in buildings is inadequate insulation. Vacuum Insulation Panels (VIPs) is emerging as a promising solution, being more energy efficient than conventional insulation materials, thinner and lighter. A VIP is made by placing a core insulation material inside a gas-barrier envelope and evacuating the air from inside the panel. The limitations to wide-scale VIP commercialization lie in lack of low-cost and high-volume processes to turn them into products suitable for use in buildings, and their short in-service lifetimes. These drawbacks were researched in a European funded project “NanoInsulate”, and this paper gives an overview of results.

In this paper a high level functional architecture for frequency and voltage control for the future (2030+) power system is presented. The proposal suggests a decomposition of the present organization of power system operation into a “web of cells”. Each cell in this web is managed by a single system operator who assumes responsibility for real-time balance and voltage control of the cell, minimizing the dependency on inter-cell communication for secure system operation. The web-of-cells architecture ensures overall system stability by a combination of decentralized and distributed control patterns for frequency and voltage control. In each control cell, the operator maintains an accurate view on the overall cell state, based on adequate monitoring capabilities, and ensures secure operation by allocating and dispatching reserves located in the cell. Intercell coordination provides for efficient system-wide management and economic optimization.

Future cyber-physical systems will behave smart, i.e., they will provide self-*properties and collaborate with each other. Software realizes this smart behavior. In modern cars, a hardware platform consists of up to 100 networked electronic control units (ECUs) that execute the software. As the amount of safety-critical software increases, the task of describing a suitable hardware platform for deploying safety-critical software components to ECUs becomes more complicated. Existing approaches for the definition of a hardware platform do not address the different stakeholder's concerns and do not provide a systematic method. This leads to an error-prone development. In this paper, we identify viewpoints for the stakeholder's concerns and provide a method for the multi-view modeling of hardware platforms. In addition, we support hierarchical and variable horizontal composition of hardware platforms by transferring concepts from component-based software engineering. To test our method, we use an Arduino-based cooperative adaptive cruise control system. © 2014 ACM.

Market readiness of organic photovoltaics for building integration

If a photovoltaic (PV) technology is assessed today in a technical framework, then efficiency is the most commonly addressed parameter, followed by service lifetime. Cost, as the third parameter of the "magic triangle", is even less often reported. However, if a new technology is prepared to enter a market, other important parameters have to be considered, especially if non-standard PV applications are targeted. Organic photovoltaic (OPV) is a well known but young PV technology of the so called third generation, which offers unique advantages for integrated products such as building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV). In this contribution we would like to highlight some of the advantages and challenges which are specific to the application of OPV in the field of building integration. Architectural design features of OPV include the ability to adapt semi-transparency, color and shape of the module. Moreover, glass-laminated OPV modules are deemed suitable for BIPV because of their ease of integration, good fire resistance, high energy harvest per nominal watt-peak and long lifetimes. A strain-compensated InGaAs/GaAsP superlattice (SL) was successfully integrated into the GaAs middle cell of a lattice-matched InGaP/GaAs/Ge triple junction (3J) solar cell. Wafer shuttle technology was employed for proof of concept because the growth of the SL was optimized for a different metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) reactor from the one for conventional 3J cells, but an entire structure can be grown in a single reactor in the future. The SL extended the absorption edge of the middle cell from 875 nm of GaAs to 1150 nm. Consequently, the photo current generated in the SL middle cells was enhanced by approximately 30% compared to a normal GaAs middle cell, improving current matching among subcells. The performance of SL cell, especially photo-current, was affected by the structure of the SL middle cell and the regrowth condition of the InGaP top cell. The conversion efficiency reached approximately 37% under 100-sun. The results encourage the implementation of InGaAs/GaAsP SL for high efficiency multi-junction solar cells (MJSCs) with reduced total layer thickness.

Energy yield assessment of a high concentration photovoltaic receiver based on simulated spectra from typical meteorological year datasets

The performance of High Concentration Photovoltaic (HCPV) receivers is influenced by changes in the solar spectrum and operating solar cell temperature (Tcell). Since the solar spectrum is affected by the variation of air mass (AM), aerosol optical depth (AOD) and precipitable water (PW), it is important to investigate their impact on the performance of HCPV receivers. It is also known that the direct normal irradiance (DNI) and ambient temperature (Tamb) are dominant factors that can influence the operating Tcell. In this study, Class I data from the NREL’s typical meteorological year (TMY3) database are used in order to predict the energy yield (Eyield) of a HCPV receiver in two USA sites with relatively high annual direct normal irradiation; Las Vegas, NV and Tucson, AZ. The results show that, although the annual average Tcell in Tucson is higher by 1.8°C and the number of “sunny hours” are 20 less than Las Vegas, the Eyield is still higher by 1.6%. The annual spectral losses in Las Vegas and Tucson were found to be 5% and 3% respectively.

Today's embedded systems often do not operate individually anymore. Instead, they form so called cyber-physical systems, where the overall functionality is provided by the collaboration of systems. Consequently, the design of this collaboration is an important activity during development and strongly affects system quality. In previous work, we presented a catalog of reusable messagebased real-time coordination patterns to avoid manual creation of new and, thus, error-prone designs. In this paper, we present an implementation of this catalog by a library in the Modelica language and an appropriate development process. The library stores ready to reuse solutions for common coordination activities and, thus, increases efficiency and effectiveness for use. Furthermore, the use of Modelica enables early holistic simulation of cyber-physical systems including feedback controllers and message-based coordination. We illustrate the library with examples from an autonomous railway vehicle and present an early evaluation. Copyright © 2014 ICST.
