Self-optimization enables technical systems to adapt their behavior to varying environmental conditions and changing operation modes. Objective functions serve as evaluation criteria for the system behavior. In this paper we present a novel approach of an objective-based controller. This controller is based on Pareto sets, which are solutions of multiobjective optimization problems and computed offline. The controller can be used to continuously adjust the system behavior by computing optimal configurations out of the Pareto sets without solving an optimization problem at runtime. The goal of the controller is to drive the objective values toward a desired relative weighting. Furthermore, the controller is able to cope with varying operation modes, which arise in case of component faults, for example. For each operation mode an entire Pareto set is computed separately. For designing the objective-based controller we use a simplified model of the closed-loop system. The objective values are approximated at runtime by means of a lowpass filter. An active suspension system affected by unknown track excitations serves as an application example. We use a particular control reconfiguration approach in case of an actuator fault as a change of the operation mode. Finally, simulations with a nonlinear model of the system validate our approach.

FP7 FUPOL project No. 287119 (see ***) aims at a new approach to traditional politics modeling. The FUPOL will be able to automatically collect, analyze and interpret opinions expressed on a large scale from the Internet and social networks. This will enable governments to gain a better understanding of the needs of citizens. Likewise the software will have the capabilities to simulate the effects of policies and laws and to assist governments in the whole policy design process. Basic visualization of the simulation results are supported by the simulators however visualization facilities are limited, therefore for detailed visual analysis of simulation data SemasVis environment is used.

Commercial transport is often referred to as an early market for plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs). In comparison to private transport, commercial transport with passenger cars is characterized by higher vehicle kilometers traveled (VKT) forming an important factor for a quick pay-off of PEVs. In this paper, we analyze multi-day driving profiles of German passenger cars and light-duty commercial vehicles from the commercial transport sector. These commercial vehicles amount to almost two thirds of the annual vehicle registrations in Germany and thus form an important market segment. Our analysis shows that about 30 % of German commercial vehicles could be economically operated as PEVs in 2020. However, it becomes apparent that energy and battery prices have a high impact on the future market share of plug-in electric vehicles in this segment. © 2013 IEEE.

Software architecture has become an established discipline in industry. Nevertheless, the available documentation of architecture is often not perceived as adequate by developers. As a foundation for the improvement of methods and tools around architecture documentation, we conducted a survey with 147 industrial participants, investigating their current problems and wishes for the future. Participants from different countries in Europe, Asia, North and South America shared their experiences. This paper presents the results of the survey. The results confirmed the common belief that architecture documentation is most frequently outdated and inconsistent and backed it up with data. Further, developers perceive difficulties with a "one-size-fits-all" architecture documentation, which does not adequately provide information for their specific task and context. Developers seek for more interactive ways of working with architecture documentation that allow finding needed information more easily with extended navigation and search possibilities. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Robustness in scheduling addresses the capability of devising schedules which are not sensitive – to a certain extent – to the disruptive effects of unexpected events. The paper presents a novel approach for protecting the quality of a schedule by taking into account the rare occurrence of very unfavourable events causing heavy losses. This calls for assessing the risk associated to the different scheduling decisions. In this paper we consider a stochastic scheduling problem with a set of jobs to be sequenced on a single machine. The release dates and processing times of the jobs are generally distributed independent random variables, while the due dates are deterministic. We present a branch-and-bound approach to minimize the Value-at-Risk of the distribution of the maximum lateness and demonstrate the viability of the approach through a series of computational experiments.

Today heavy duty trucks are designed and optimized towards a limited variance set of usage and for maximum payload. With European Commission's targets for reducing the consumption of fossil energy resources, increasing transport - and fuel efficiency, future trucks-trailers must be easily adaptable for each freight, load and mission. And during the operation phase, the vehicle combination automatically adjusts itself to the actual driving environment in terms of traffic situation, topology, and payload. The TRANSFORMERS project combines a modular approach for mission rightsizing by means of hybridization, truck engine downsizing and a trailer design that addresses simultaneously aerodynamics and load efficiency improvements. The overall goal is to achieve 25% energy load efficiency (in energy/***) in a real world application taking into account the needs to maintain road infrastructure and traffic safety. This paper will give an introduction to the project, pre-standard for a hybrid on demand vehicle and its objectives towards greening surface transport.

Heat dissipation in 3D chip stacks suffers from multiple thermal interfaces. The effective thermal resistance of the bond-line between individual dies, with the electrical interconnects can be minimized by the introduction of thermal conductive underfills. Up to now, only sequentially formed underfills result in true percolation and hence, thermal conductivities of more than 1 W/m-K. In this study, we report on various aspects to consider during the formation of percolating thermal underfills, by centrifugal filling of micron-sized particles and the subsequent backfilling of an epoxy by capillary action. Particle assemblies within silicon-glass cavities were investigated for mono and poly-dispersed spherical and facetted particles with characteristic dimension in the range of 15 μm to 50 μm. Clogging of particles between silicon pillars could be mitigated at low particle fluxes dispensed by the hour glass principle. Particle shadowing behind the silicon pillars could be eliminated by ultrasonic agitation. Finally, close to crystalline phases could be identified for the mono-dispersed particles, compared to a random packing for the poly-dispersed particles. The effective pore diameter of the particle beds was experimentally derived from a backfilling experiment with viscosity standards. A normalized pore diameter of 0.15, 0.17 to 0.20 and 0.11 was observed for mono and poly-dispersed spherical and facetted particles, respectively. The backfill dynamics can be predicted with those values and the Washburn equation. Cavities filled with particles down to 30 μm diameter could be filled completely with the available low viscosity epoxy system. Finally, we report on the re-arrangement of filler particles due to capillary action and viscous drag, during the backfilling process. Defects are minimal for fluids of low surface tension and high viscosity. Hence, only 1 area-% of defects were observed from the infiltration of epoxies.
