In the future, collective use of cars in cities, such as car-sharing, will increase. This trend provides optimal conditions for the wider use of electric vehicles. However, a charging infrastructure which is easy to use and easy to integrate has to be available in urban areas. The infrastructure brings about two conditions: First, the shared use of electric vehicles has to be convenient for the customer. Second, it is necessary that the provision and operation of the shared used cars is profitable for the providers.

Resolving vulnerability identification errors using security requirements on business process models

Purpose - In any information security risk assessment, vulnerabilities are usually identified by information-gathering techniques. However, vulnerability identification errors - wrongly identified or unidentified vulnerabilities - can occur as uncertain data are used. Furthermore, businesses' security needs are not considered sufficiently. Hence, security functions may not protect business assets sufficiently and cost-effectively. This paper aims to resolve vulnerability errors by analysing the security requirements of information assets in business process models. Design/methodology/approach - Business process models have been selected for use, because there is a close relationship between business process objectives and risks. Security functions are evaluated in terms of the information flow of business processes regarding their security requirements. The claim that vulnerability errors can be resolved was validated by comparing the results of a current risk assessment approach with the proposed approach. The comparison is conducted both at three entities of an insurance company, as well as through a controlled experiment within a survey among security professionals. Findings - Vulnerability identification errors can be resolved by explicitly evaluating security requirements in the course of business;this is not considered in current assessment methods. Originality/value - It is shown that vulnerability identification errors occur in practice. With the explicit evaluation of security requirements, identification errors can be resolved. Risk assessment methods should consider the explicit evaluation of security requirements. Copyright © 2013 Emerald Group Publishing Limited. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we present a novel geometry for a photovoltaic module. This novel geometry employs light trapping effects to split the solar spectrum onto two different kinds of solar cells. The two different kinds of solar cells utilize different parts of the solar spectrum most efficiently. The proposed structure is based on prisms. The different kinds of solar cells are attached to opposing surfaces of the prisms. To achieve spectral selectivity, either spectrally selective filters or the solar cells itself are used. After introducing the general concept, we discuss different possible realizations. The theoretical potential of the light trap is calculated using the concept of spectral efficiency. Based on experimental solar cell data, we calculate theoretically that conversion efficiencies exceeding 30% are possible with such a module using silicon and GaAs solar cells. First experiments show that the optical losses of the proposed geometry are as low as 2.1% relative. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

For radiometric application in the frequency range around 325 GHz, two low noise amplifier millimeter-wave monolithic integrated circuits have been developed. They use metamorphic high electron mobility transistors with a gate-length of 35 nm. The first amplifier only uses transistors in common-source configuration, whereas the second only employs transistors in cascode configuration. Their simulated and measured performance is compared to find which configuration is advantageous for the design of low noise amplifiers in this frequency range.

Commercial transport is often referred to as an early market for plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs). In comparison to private transport, commercial transport with passenger cars is characterized by higher vehicle kilometers traveled (VKT) forming an important factor for a quick pay-off of PEVs. In this paper, we analyze multi-day driving profiles of German passenger cars and light-duty commercial vehicles from the commercial transport sector. These commercial vehicles amount to almost two thirds of the annual vehicle registrations in Germany and thus form an important market segment. Our analysis shows that about 30 % of German commercial vehicles could be economically operated as PEVs in 2020. However, it becomes apparent that energy and battery prices have a high impact on the future market share of plug-in electric vehicles in this segment.

Population aging has been taking place in many countries across the globe and more recently in emerging countries. In this context, Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) has become one focus of attention, including methods, products, services, and AAL software systems that support the everyday lives of elderly people, promoting mainly their independence and dignity. From the perspective of computer science, efforts are already being dedicated to adequately developing AAL systems. However, in spite of its relevance, AAL has not been properly investigated in emerging countries, including Brazil. Thus, the contribution of this paper is to present the main perspectives of research in AAL, in particular in the area of software engineering, considering that the Brazilian population is also subject to the aging process. The main intention of this paper is to raise the interest of Brazilian researchers, as well as government and industry, for this important area. © 2012 Elsevier Inc.

The national German research project Mobile Satellite communication in Ka-band (MoSaKa) addresses the growing interest in advanced heterogeneous satellite communication in Ka-band frequencies. In the framework of the project, a satellite communication system has been defined and developed which implements fully meshed connectivity among all stationary and mobile terminals and is dedicated to security, crisis, and rescue applications. In this paper we describe the adaptive and flexible resource allocation mechanism of MoSaKa which is distributed among the physical layer, data link layer and network layer.

Micro-electrodes and micro-electrode arrays are essential in a variety of medical applications like deep brain stimulators, cochlear implants or retinal implants. To have a close interface to the human tissue for stimulating neurons or recording action potentials, these micro-electrode arrays must be flexible and should have a large area and a large number of electrodes. In order to electrically connect such large electrode numbers in implantable devices with integrated electronics, simple wiring is no longer possible. In fact to reduce the number of conductor paths, electrodes have to be connected via a bus system. Therefore it is necessary to bring CMOS circuitry in close proximity to the stimulation electrodes, by this forming an "intelligent electrode". To keep the system flexible the silicon chips have to be thinned. In this paper the design and fabrication steps of such a flexible intelligent implantable MEA-system and results on mechanical and electrical properties are presented. Furthermore, alternatively coating of the electrodes with carbon nanotubes by electrophoresis has been investigated and will be presented. © 2013 Mesago Messe Frankfurt GmbH. All rights reserved.
