One of the main challenges that companies face nowadays is effectively reusing and sharing information and knowledge not only within teams, but also between other divisions or with other companies that are involved in the product lifecycle. This work-in-progress paper summarizes the recent results of the EU FP7 research project ManuVAR (211548) - Manual Work Support throughout System Lifecycle by Exploiting Virtual and Augmented Reality. In ManuVAR it is proposed to define a Virtual Model concept for bi-directional communication of various actors across the lifecycle. In this paper we focus on the architecture of the virtual model, its implementation and applicability in industry.

The Web Services Agreement specification defines a normative language to formulate Service Level Agreements and a basic protocol to expose service-level descriptions, validate service-level requests, and come to an agreement. This protocol, often called “take-it-or-leave-it”, allows a service provider and a service consumer to decide whether to accept or reject a service offer. Although this approach is sufficient for a number of use cases, others exist with requirements for multi-step negotiation or the adaptation of an existing agreement. In this paper, we describe the Web Services Agreement Negotiation protocol, a proposal by the Open Grid Forum to extend the existing specification. This proposal is the result of combining various research activities that have been conducted to define protocols for negotiating service levels or to supersede the existing “take-it-or-leave-it” protocol. The main characteristics of this proposal are the multi-round negotiation capability, renegotiation capability, and compliance with the original specification.

In this contribution an electrostatic curved beam actuator for microvalve applications is presented. The actuator consists of two layers of nickel consequently plated upon each other. The resulting double-layer cantilever beam has internal stress gradient due to variation of the electroplating process parameters for each layer. By accurate control of these parameters, desired bending heights were obtained. Compared to bimetallic bending actuators, the curvature of the single-metal beam is less dependable on ambient temperature. Thus, more stable performance under changing working conditions was ensured. In order to avoid sticking during the operation of the variable capacitor, stand-off bumps on the back-side of the actuator beam were provided. The actuator was integrated into an active 2/2-microvalve on a silicon substrate.

Fine and tall grid lines on high sheet resistance emitter can increase the efficiency of silicon solar cells by reducing the shadow loss and improving the blue response. However, current screen printing pastes are neither able to provide the adequate line geometry nor make good ohmic contact to high sheet resistance emitter. This paper uses a combination of inkjet printing and light induced plating of silver to solve both problems. The ink jetting of grid lines is used to write ~38 μm wide and ~4 μm tall seed lines. These grid lines grow to 65 μm wide and 20-25 μm tall after light induced plating of silver. The silver plating solution penetrates the entire contact region underneath the grid lines to reduce the PbO in the glass layer to Pb metal in addition to plating the silver crystallites underneath. This lowers the contact resistance. Prolonged plating builds the line height to reduce the line resistance. A combination of low contact and line resistances produced fill factor of 79.2% on 95-Ω/sq emitter. This resulted in 239-cm 2 Cz silicon solar cell efficiencies up to 18.7% with an average of 18.4%.

For mobile platforms with steerable standard wheels it is necessary to precisely coordinate rotation and steering angle of their wheels. An established approach to ensure this is to represent the current state of motion in form of the Instantaneous Centre of Motion (ICM) and to derive a trajectory within this space. However, while control in the ICM space does guarantee adherence to the system's non-holonomic constraints, it does not avoid the system's singular configurations. Within this work we address the problem of singularity avoidance within the ICM space. Singularities related to the mathematical representation of the ICM are reduced by a reformulation of this representation. Furthermore, a controller based on artificial potential fields avoiding singular configurations of the robot by representing them as obstacles in the derived ICM space is designed. The resulting controller is particularized and analyzed w.r.L the Care-O-bot 3 demonstrator.

Many new therapeutic approaches are based on gene transfection of cells. Data about dynamic interaction with cell membranes can support the selection of polymers and polyplexes regarding an optimal gene delivery reagent. A microchip/-fluidic system and an impedance-based method for monitoring the effects on individual cells after application of polymeric DNA-delivery systems is developed and evaluated. It was successfully demonstrated that the effects of polymers on the cell membrane can be monitored over time by using impedance measurements.

The workshop program included 13 workshops covering a wide range of topics in artificial intelligence. There were several presentations on particular formalisms for combining the levels of planning from the perspectives of classical planning, motion planning, POMDPs, search-based planning, and temporal logic-based constraints. Henry Lieberman from Massachusetts institute of Technology Media Laboratory presented work developing a platform for knowledge acquisition and usage from expert users, built upon experience with eliciting information from nonexperts in a collaborative manner. The objective of the AAAI Workshop on Goal-Directed Autonomy (GDA) was to encourage discussion and novel contributions on intelligent agents that can self-select their goals. Jeremy Baxter from QinetiQ focused on user interaction, while Nick Hawes described a goal-directed reasoning framework for controlling a mobile robot.

In this paper, we describe a clinical laboratory scenario, where the next generation Ambient Intelligent (AmI) medical devices semantically coordinate with each other not only for the diagnosis of Pheochromocytoma and/or Neuroblastoma tumors, but also the forwarding of a higher level of interpreted results to a remote health information system, using a 3G mobile device as a gateway, to assist a health professional for meticulous diagnosis. These AmI medical devices are enriched with our SOA based middleware infrastructure, named Semantic Medical Devices Space, which supports ontology based semantic discovery of desired medical devices, and provides Semantic Web Service based interface for exchanging the measurement results.
