Robots are emerging from industrial plants toward every people's daily life. Thus, navigation in and understanding of human related environments becomes a prerequisite for the systems of tomorrow. Most such environments can be efficiently described using line segments. However, incorporation of extent information is often difficult, as line segments are seldom observed completely and erroneous data-association may corrupt the information associated to a certain segment. To reduce such problems this paper proposes a statistically driven description of line segments. The corresponding parameters are decomposed into line and corner features, which are separately tracked through an extended Kalman filter (EKF). Information about the extent of the lines is encoded statistically. Therefore, we use a method to recursively incorporate the information gained through a time-series of measurements. Thus, the covariance matrix belonging to a line segment grows as new regions of the corresponding line are discovered. Experimental results obtained by implementation on the mobile platform ITrike show the validity of our algorithm.

Recently 3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Project) has standardised MBMS (Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Services) enabling broadcast and multicast transmissions over GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) and UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System). Hence it makes an efficient usage of radio resources possible. 3GPP and 3GPP2 introduced the specification of IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) and MMD (Multimedia Domain), receptively, which both are responsible for resource, admission and charging control. It allows for cost efficient and flexible provision of enriched multimedia services over IP networks. Up to now the controlling IMS and MBMS are separated subsystems sharing no common interfaces. This paper introduces both systems and depicts ongoing standardisation activities regarding their interworking. Finally, it proposes a service provision architecture and describes required signalling flows which enable the provision of multicast streaming using the MBMS specifications not only as access bearer technology. Thus, we present a step towards the evolution of IMS enabling it with multicast and broadcast capabilities. © 2007 IEEE.

This paper presents a novel sensor array based on MEMS-technology for quantitative measurement of the air quality and a novel model based measurement strategy. The sensor array consists of SnO{sub}2 - gas sensors, a porous silicon based humidity sensor and a Pt-temperature sensor monolithically integrated on a single chip. It was fabricated using SOI-technology, Pt-metallization and bulk micromachining. Good characteristics of the sensor array in terms of thermal properties, sensitivity, selectivity and time response have been achieved. The values of gas content and atmospheric humidity evaluated based on the developed sensor models are in a good consistence with the actual values.

Many applications in the domain of medical as well as industrial image processing make considerable use of flexible endoscopes - so called fiberscopes - to gain visual access to holes, hollows, antrums and cavities that are difficult to enter and examine. For a complete exploration and understanding of an antrum, 3d depth information might be desirable or yet necessary. This often requires the mapping of 3d world coordinates to 2d image coordinates which is estimated by camera calibration. In order to retrieve useful results, the precise extraction of the imaged calibration pattern's markers plays a decisive role in the camera calibration process. Unfortunately, when utilizing fiberscopes, the image conductor introduces a disturbing comb structure to the images that anticipates a (precise) marker extraction. Since the calibration quality crucially depends on subpixel-precise calibration marker positions, we apply static comb structure removal algorithms along with a dynamic spatial resolution enhancement method in order to improve the feature extraction accuracy. In our experiments, we demonstrate that our approach results in a more accurate calibration of flexible endoscopes and thus allows for a more precise reconstruction of 3d information from fiberoptic images.

Over the last years, the Internet has evolved towards becoming the dominant platform for deploying real time and multimedia services. This evolution has had as a consequence that the selection of an appropriate server, proxy or super node with reference to some specific QoS parameter becomes of paramount importance. We consider in our paper the specific case of delay estimation. An investigation of existing approaches for the estimation and prediction of network delay is provided. Based on that, we further suggest NetForecast as a way to overcome limitations of existing prediction methods. NetForecast is an algorithm for delay prediction in provider controlled networks. The algorithm is based on a combination of landmark-based distance estimation, clustering and a triangulation principle. The paper reports on preliminary performance of NetForecast, as provided by a simulation study. Our results show the feasibility of the suggested method.

The usage of advanced audio processing algorithms in products has always been limited by the available processing power. For powerful concepts like the wave field synthesis (WFS) the performance is limited by the execution speed. In the past it was possible to increase the performance of digital signal processors by increasing the clock rate. The next generation will be highly parallel heterogeneous multi-processor systems. This paper presents a now parallel processor architecture and the first stops towards an adequate optimization of WFS. A software development environment which assists in creating scalable programs for highly parallel hardware will be further explained. An enhanced WFS convolution structure is presented which use position dependent filtering and improve the interpolation necessary for moving sound sources.

Complex power systems need more observability in critical situations. Synchron phasor measurement is a new technology that improves power supply reliability and quality. PMU measure various system parameters extremely precisely and rapidly. Every PMU measurement receives a GPS synchronized time stamp, thus making it possible to perform precise comparative analyses and obtain an overview of the complete system. Since system operators have to work economically and these units and their installation incur costs, they need an algorithm for their optimal placement. This paper presents a concept based on a decoupled Newton-Raphson power flow analysis and a sensitivity analysis, which helps place PMU optimally. The theory behind the algorithm is elucidated and results of a system test are presented.

The pile up of As at the SiO 2 /Si interface was investigated by grazing incidence X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy in combination with removal of silicon layers by etching with thicknesses on the order of a nanometer. In order to determine the thickness of the silicon layers removed at the interface, atomic force microscope measurements were performed at trench structures. With this method, it is possible to determine the thickness of the piled-up region in the silicon. In addition, it is possible to clearly distinguish between the segregated atoms and the As atoms in the bulk over a large range of implantation doses from 3middot10 12 cm -2 to 1middot10 -16 cm -2 . The samples were annealed at 900degC and 1000degC, respectively, for times sufficiently long to ensure that the segregation reflects an equilibrium effect. With this approach, the pile-up of As was measured with new precision.
