This paper reports on the comparison done for the first time between the simulations and measurements of monolithic millimeter-wave integrated single-ended passive down-converter circuits, fabricated in the 35-nm and 50-nm gate-length mHEMT technologies, and in the 100-nm gate-length AlGaN/GaN HEMT technology. The down-converters are intended for operation in D-band (110–170 GHz). The three MMICs are based on a single-ended resistive-type mixer with a single transistor topology and give an IF output frequency of 200 MHz. The average measured conversion gain of the 35-nm and 50-nm mHEMT mixer is −6.5 dB and −7.5 dB, respectively, driven by an LO input power of 4 dBm. The measured 1-dB compression point is more than 6 dBm of RF input power for both circuits. The average conversion gain of the 100-nm GaN-HEMT mixer is −9.6 dB with an LO power of 11 dBm and its 1-dB compression point is greater than 7 dBm.

Health Condition (HC) estimation of discrete power electronic devices is an important task for ensuring their reliable operation in mission-critical applications. Assuming bond-wire failure as a specific type of package failure, we take a direct approach to address the HC estimation problem using a dataset from accelerated aging tests. We first present a new concept of HC reference curve, which intends to represent the general health status over the device’s lifetime using a health score. In particular, it is defined in relation to the device’s Remaining Useful Lifetime (RUL) and captures the nonlinear health degradation status. Based on the HC reference curve, we mathematically formulate the HC estimation problem, and then develop an HC estimation flow using random forest algorithm. Finally, in our experiments, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our HC estimation method and the suitability of estimating the device’s health status in comparison with the RUL estimation, which is a common yet indirect approach.

This article proposes a current limiting function for a self-sensing and self-triggering monolithically integrated SiC circuit breaker device. The proposed function provides the device not only with a fast-response current breaking operation but also with the current limiting operation, including supplying a constant current to the load and preventing the detection of inrush currents. This function is suitable for replacing mechanical conductors in initial charging circuits within rectifiers and safety equipment in case of overcurrent phenomena. The proposed method achieves certain constant currents through a simple variation of the gate-drive circuit with the adjustable parameters of an additional MOSFET. The mechanism of the current limiting function is verified using TCAD simulations based on certain conditions. Consequently, experimental results verified that the circuit breaker device with the current limiting function reduces the inrush current by up to 76.9% using a 500 VDC distribution circuit system. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

This work presents the first implementation of a down-converting MMIC mixer in a 100 nm AlGaN/GaN HEMT technology designed to operate in the V-band (50 - 70 GHz). A resistive topology is used for higher linearity and smaller footprint. The proposed MMIC mixer occupies an area of 3 mm 2 . Further, it features a conversion gain better than -8 dB, and an isolation greater than 12 dB between the LO and RF ports. The input power-related -1 dB compression point is 15 dBm at an input LO power of 20 dBm. The proposed mixer demonstrates over 30 % of input RF bandwidth in the V-band and almost 2.5 GHz of IF output bandwidth. Additionally, the MMIC consumes no power due to its resistive nature.

An approach to predict standard times for upcoming individual customer orders based on historical production orders is developed. The approach follows the CRISP-DM model with regard to the steps data preparation, modeling and evaluation. A precision steel tube straightening machine is provided as a validation example. Furthermore, the paper focuses on how the standard time prediction approach can be successfully integrated into the IT infrastructure of a production focused company. Especially data availability and accessibility in enterprise resource planning systems are discussed. The presented approach offers users the value of more precise scheduling in production than established approaches. © 2023 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. Lyapunov functions are a widely used tool to evaluate stability properties of nonlinear dynamical systems’ equilibria. In this paper quantifier elimination is used to construct Lyapunov functions for polynomial systems from a parametric ansatz. Because the existing algorithms for quantifier elimination are inherently computationally expensive, a strategy is to simplify the quantifier elimination problem beforehand. A method is presented that may help simplifying the problem of finding suitable Lyapunov functions by deriving easier to evaluate necessary conditions. Finally, the introduced method is applied to an example system to show local asymptotic stability of an equilibrium point by constructing a Lyapunov function. © 2023 The Authors.

The extraction of process knowledge and its use for modeling and subsequent analysis is a very valuable approach to optimizing processes. Process Mining (PM) methods are widely used knowledge extraction techniques based on process knowledge recorded in event logs. One shortcoming is that PM approaches cannot easily access data in non-event log format, and secondly, that models are generated using directly-follows relations, which in the case of processes with concurrent activities means that process transitions may not be modeled correctly, and the resulting models do not correspond to reality as well as being unnecessarily complex. In addition, increasing digitization in manufacturing enables an ever greater collection of various data sources throughout the process with varying levels of information. Besides PM, in recent years great progress has been made in learning causal structures via causal discovery (CD) as well as in explicitly using additional expert knowledge. We argue that CD and expert knowledge are valuable additions to existing PM based approaches, as they allow knowledge extraction and modeling on different process levels. To combine these levels of information, this paper uses a manufacturing use case to show heterogeneous data sources and expert knowledge are used to create hybrid models. The results show that the combination of data-driven modeling methods with expert knowledge help to compensate for the weaknesses of the individual methods and achieve better overall results.

Digital Twins in battery cell manufacturing require accurate descriptions of the process characteristics. The Washburn equation can estimate the wetting of the jelly roll after electrolyte filling. This paper deals with the potential of a stepwise implementation of a Digital Twin in the wetting step under different process framework conditions. The modelling considers product and process deviations during the manufacturing process and optimises the production scenarios concerning the required processing time and process energy. This approach promotes transparency in the planning and operation of wetting processes in battery cell manufacturing. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.. All rights reserved.

For a wireless power and data transmission system, when a shared link is used for both purposes, the cross-talk interference from higher harmonics of the power transfer interface affects the reliability of bidirectional data communication. In literature [1] and most applications, the carrier frequency for data transfer is kept at least one order of magnitude higher than the power transfer frequency so that the cross-talk can be minimized, but not eradicated completely. The opposite, however, selecting an operational frequency of the data transfer lower than that of the power allows for extracting the data with a simple low pass filter instead of bandpass filters. Moreover, harmonics from the power transfer interface cannot fall into the data communication band. To exploit this possibility for a shared ultrasonic link, we present a novel technique to transfer power and data through a 20 mm thick metal wall, involving only one pair of transducers while keeping the data transfer frequency lower than the power transfer frequency. © 2022 IEEE.

This paper deals with the implementation and results of the application of a multi-stage traffic light control system which includes a simulation-based traffic estimation and model predictive control. The traffic light control system incorporates a fuzzy system for traffic light phase preselection, followed by a model predictive control to optimise phase combinations and switching times. Predefined phases are selected without restrictions in the order according to a multi-objective optimisation to adapt to the traffic as freely as possible. Initially, the system is tested in simulations and compared with existing methods and analysed afterwards for its effectiveness in a prototype commissioning in field tests. Results indicate high potentials for reducing emissions and waiting times, highlighting the system's value. However, further refinement is necessary for standard implementation. This comprehensive approach demonstrates advancements in traffic management technology, showcasing the potential for enhancing urban mobility and reducing environmental impact.
