Enabling industrial energy efficiency and flexibility with dynamic simulation-based optimization of manufacturing operations

In the face of substantial environmental impact, energy-intensive industries are compelled to deal with a spectrum of future energy scenarios, including the adoption of electrification and hydrogen use. In addition, these sectors are under pressure to enhance energy efficiency and adaptability to reduce costs. The integrated planning and control of production and energy system components is challenging due to the complexity and lack of available methods, though. This paper addresses this gap, by introducing a simulation-based method that optimizes production and energy system components. The planning method is based on a multicriteria meta-heuristic with an integrated simulation of production and energy system behavior. It evauates different future energy scenarios with electrification and hydrogen use including variable energy markets and storage systems. The method is applied and validated in a case study in an energy-intensive steel production. The results show the significant benefits of the dynamic planning and optimization for various variables in two different heat-treatment process technologies.

Traditional data monetization approaches face challenges related to data protection and logistics. In response, digital data marketplaces have emerged as intermediaries simplifying data transactions. Despite the growing establishment and acceptance of digital data marketplaces, significant challenges hinder efficient data trading. As a result, few companies can derive tangible value from their data, leading to missed opportunities in understanding customers, pricing decisions, and fraud prevention. In this paper, we explore both technical and organizational challenges affecting data monetization. Moreover, we identify areas in need of further research, aiming to expand the boundaries of current knowledge by emphasizing where research is currently limited or lacking.

To ensure the high performance of grid-connected systems, a synchronization unit plays a crucial role. The frequency-locked loop (FLL) has gained popularity for the synchronization and control of grid-tied converters in recent times. The presence of DC-offset in the measured grid voltage deteriorates the performance of the FLL and also affects system dynamics. The Second Order Generalized Integrator (SOGI)-FLL is widely accepted among researchers. However, achieving high performance with the SOGI-FLL depends on fine-tuned parameters. The SOGI-FLL involves trade-offs between gains, so attaining the optimal design of the gain parameters leads to more complexity. This paper proposes a simple FLL structure to enhance the performance of the FLL and grid-tied converter control under DC-offset and grid disturbances. The proposed FLL has reduced tuning complexity and robust DC-offset rejection capability with enhanced dynamic performance.

This paper presents a fully-digital delta-sigma digital-to-analog converter (DAC) for application in audio and hearing aid system-on-chips (SoCs). The slim design is initially synthesized and verified on field programmable gate array (FPGA) hardware, followed by first-time-right production of the integrated circuit in a modern 22 nm FDSOI CMOS technology. Compared to conventional mixed-signal DACs, time-to-product is low, iterative design cycles are reduced, and technology migration is eased and by the fully-digital topology. The circuit operates with a 20 bit input signal bit from serial I2S interface. Audio signal bandwidths up to 8 kHz are supported by the employed 3rd order delta-sigma modulator operating at a clock frequency of 1.024 MHz. We propose two versions of the DAC's interpolation filter with low interpolation ratio of 64. Version one is composed of two half-band filters and a sinc2 filter, and version two employs six half-band filters achieving higher accuracy. In measurements on wafer prober equipment, both design achieve signal-to-noise and distortion ratios of around 80 dBFS with an ultra-low power consumption of 48.8 $\mu \mathrm{W}$ in best case at a supply voltage of 0.8 V. The data correlate with measurements on FPGA and simulation. The circuit is employed in a digital hearing aid SoC.

Agile networks with fast adaptation and reconfiguration capabilities are required for on-demand provisioning of various network services. We propose a new methodical framework for short-time network optimization based on quantum computing (QC) and integer linear program (ILP) models, which has the potential of realizing a real-time network automation. We define methods to map a nearly real-world ILP model for resource provisioning to a quadratic unconstrained binary optimization (QUBO) problem, which is solvable on quantum annealer (QA). We concentrate on the three-node network to evaluate our approach and its obtainable quality of solution using the state-of-the-art quantum annealer D-Wave Advantage™ 5.2/5.3. By studying the annealing process, we find annealing configuration parameters that obtain feasible solutions close to the reference solution generated by the classical ILP-solver CPLEX. Further, we studied the scaling of the network problem and provide estimations on quantum annealer's hardware requirements to enable a proper QUBO problem embedding of larger networks. We achieved the QUBO embedding of networks with up to 6 nodes on the D-Wave Advantage™. According to our estimates a real-sized network with 12 to 16 nodes require a QA hardware with at least 50000 qubits or more. © 2023 IEEE.

Applying hydrogen can potentially decarbonize road transport. This paper introduces a novel approach for deriving hydrogen demand curves in road transport. By analyzing acceptable prices for new vehicle buyers opting for hydrogen and the possible hydrogen demand from these new vehicles, our model provides insights into potential market dynamics. The model is applied to Germany and simulates the total hydrogen demand across 15 price scenarios. The results reveal that hydrogen demand can be expected from passenger transport in 2030 but not in 2045, attributed to the economic viability and increasing availability of electric alternatives. Within freight transport, heavy-duty freight emerges as a key segment with significant potential demand at relatively high acceptable prices. Comparison with a prior study underscores the model's contribution, offering insights into the upper bounds of acceptable hydrogen price.

Rural clutter channels, which vary over time, significantly impact radar measurements and communications. Predicting their amplitude, Doppler, and phase characteristics remains a challenging task. The goal of this study is to simulate bistatic radar clutter channels in rural areas by looking at transfer functions that are based on real X-band measurement data. We suggest a denoising diffusion probabilistic model (DDPM) to capture the fine details of fast-fading channels. This will make it possible to create fake clutter radar data. The results demonstrate that our DDPM can accurately simulate rural clutter channels, providing a valuable tool for testing and evaluating radar systems. We also discuss the model's sensitivity to real data and the accuracy of the generated simulations.

This study investigates the feasibility of automated setup of profile wrapping processes on new products using machine learning on past setup examples. The task is characterized by high complexity of the considered production system in combination with highly varying products and a very small available database. This database also reveals ambiguous ground truth due to human, unsystematic preferences. A simple geometric-physical motivated preprocessing is proposed. On the resulting data, a Deep Convolutional Neural Network in the form of an autoencoder is shown to be very suitable for predicting wrapping actions for new products. The good but improvable results are discussed extensively with respect to the technological background and possible solutions are proposed.

Performance Tradeoff Between Overhead and Achievable SNR in RIS Beam Training

Efficient beam training is the key challenge in the codebook-based configuration of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) because the beam training overhead can have a strong impact on the achievable system performance. In this paper, we study the performance tradeoff between overhead and achievable signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in RIS beam training while taking into account the size of the targeted coverage area, the RIS response time, and the delay for feedback transmissions. Thereby, we consider three common beam training strategies: full search (FS), hierarchical search (HS), and tracking-based search (TS). Our analysis shows that the codebook-based illumination of a given coverage area can be realized with wide- or narrow-beam designs, which result in two different scaling laws for the achievable SNR. Similarly, there are two regimes for the overhead, where the number of pilot symbols required for reliable beam training is dependent on and independent of the SNR, respectively. Based on these insights, we investigate the impact of the beam training overhead on the effective rate and provide an upper bound on the user velocity for which the overhead is negligible. Moreover, when the overhead is not negligible, we show that TS beam training achieves higher effective rates than HS and FS beam training, while HS beam training may or may not outperform FS beam training, depending on the RIS response time, feedback delay, and codebook size. Finally, we present numerical simulation results that verify our theoretical analysis. In particular, our results confirm the existence of the proposed regimes, reveal that fast RISs can lead to negligible overhead for FS beam training, and show that large feedback delays can significantly reduce the performance for HS beam training. The upcoming decentralized production systems seem to be promising in Industry 4.0 assembly to handle the challenges of highly individual products. Matrix production characterized by freely linked workstations and an advanced automation level are highly flexible. That is why many efforts have already been made to explore the advantages compared to existing flow shop production systems, but also the additional challenges arising from this new paradigm. One of these challenges is the synchronization of main product and supply part flow at the individual workstations during order scheduling. This paper presents a new approach of integrating logistics support processes into the scheduling of the main product flow to consider the part supply in the decisions taken during scheduling avoiding waiting times. We compare our integrated approach with the existing decoupled scheduling approach, based on a "bicycle assembly" scenario. The results are promising particularly when part supply is a bottleneck.
