As the Internet of Things (IoT) expands, sensors play a crucial role in collecting and transmitting vital data across various domains. However, their susceptibility to Intentional Electromagnetic Interference (IEMI) raises significant concerns. This paper investigates the vulnerabilities of barometric sensors to IEMI. Utilizing a methodology similar to previous studies, measurements were conducted using Continuous Wave (CW) and pulse signals to assess sensor behavior under IEMI. The findings reveal differences in susceptibility between the studied barometers highlighting distinct vulnerabilities and responses to electromagnetic interference. Specifically, variations in temperature and pressure readings, along with system crashes induced by IEMI, were observed. Additionally, potential coupling paths on PCBs are discussed. This study underscores the importance of tailored mitigation strategies for sensor-based systems.

Biometric identification allows to secure sensitive information. Since existing biometric traits, such as finger prings, voice, etc. are associated with different limitations, we exemplified the potential of blood flow sounds for biometric authentication in previous work. Therefore, we used measurements from seven different users acquired with a custom-built auscultation device to calculate the spectrograms of these signals for each cardiac cycle using continuous wavelet transform (CWT). The resulting spectral images were then used for training of a convolutional neural network (CNN). In this work, we repeated the same experiment with data from twelve users by adding more data from the original seven users and data from five more users. This lead to an imbalanced dataset, where the amount of available data for the new users was much smaller, e.g., U1 had more than 900 samples per side whereas the new user U9 had less than 100 samples per side. We experienced a lower performance for the new users, i.e. their sensitivity was 18-21% lower than the overall accuracy. Thus, we examined whether the augmentation of data leads to better results. This analysis was performed using generative adversarial networks (GANs). The newly generated data was then used for training of a CNN with several different settings, revealing the potential of GAN-based data augmentation for increasing the accuracy of biometric authentication using blood flow sounds. © 2024 by SCITEPRESS – Science and Technology Publications, Lda.

Towards Packaging Unit Detection for Automated Palletizing Tasks

For various automated palletizing tasks, the detection of packaging units is a crucial step preceding the actual handling of the packaging units by an industrial robot. We propose an approach to this challenging problem that is fully trained on synthetically generated data and can be robustly applied to arbitrary real world packaging units without further training or setup effort. The proposed approach is able to handle sparse and low quality sensor data, can exploit prior knowledge if available and generalizes well to a wide range of products and application scenarios. To demonstrate the practical use of our approach, we conduct an extensive evaluation on real-world data with a wide range of different retail products. Further, we integrated our approach in a lab demonstrator and a commercial solution will be marketed through an industrial partner. © 2023, CC BY.

Compute-in-memory (CiM) emerges as a promising solution to solve hardware challenges in artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT), particularly addressing the"memory wall" issue. By utilizing nonvolatile memory (NVM) devices in a crossbar structure, CiM efficiently accelerates multiply-accumulate (MAC) computations, the crucial operations in neural networks and other AI models. Among various NVM devices, Ferroelectric FET (FeFET) is particularly appealing for ultra-low-power CiM arrays due to its CMOS compatibility, voltage-driven write/read mechanisms and high ION/IOFF ratio. Moreover, subthreshold-operated FeFETs, which operate at scaling voltages in the subthreshold region, can further minimize the power consumption of CiM array. However, subthreshold-FeFETs are susceptible to temperature drift, resulting in computation accuracy degradation. Existing solutions exhibit weak temperature resilience at larger array size and only support 1-bit. In this paper, we propose TReCiM, an ultra-low-power temperature-resilient multibit 2FeFET-1T CiM design that reliably performs MAC operations in the subthreshold-FeFET region with temperature ranging from 0°C to 85°C at scale. We benchmark our design using NeuroSim framework in the context of VGG-8 neural network architecture running the CIFAR-10 dataset. Benchmarking results suggest that when considering temperature drift impact, our proposed TReCiM array achieves 91.31% accuracy, with 1.86% accuracy improvement compared to existing 1-bit 2T-1FeFET CiM array. Furthermore, our proposed design achieves 48.03 TOPS/W energy efficiency at system level, comparable to existing designs with smaller technology feature sizes. © 2024 Copyright is held by the owner/author(s).

The capacity of software to adapt its functionalities based on user preferences or hardware requirements is of utmost importance. Improved user satisfaction and overall system performance are just two of the advantages. Kernel configuration serves as a practical example. Situated at the core of an operating system, the kernel is responsible for critical tasks such as process management and memory allocation. Its configuration process has naturally evolved to address the needs of users and systems, as well as specific hardware requirements. However, given the complexity of such projects, the entire configuration process can quickly become overwhelming, especially for users unfamiliar with kernel internals. This paper introduces a 32-bit kernel with a more user-friendly configuration process, facilitated by a step-by-step configuration menu and default configuration profiles. The kernel implements essential features such as file system support, a syscall interface, process control, and physical and virtual memory management.

We review micromachining strategies with optimized energy deposition from ultrafast lasers operating with wavelengths from 1980 nm down to 257 nm. By discussing multifarious machining concepts, such as, e.g., in-volume silicon processing (NIR), drilling of fine-metal masks (green), or cutting of polymer foils (DUV), we show how processing benefits from adapted photon energies or tighter foci. In all cases, an optimized processing solution is achieved precisely when light source, beam shaping and focusing concept are tailored to each other and to the respective light-material interaction. © 2025 SPIE.

Digitalization and sustainability are central fields of action for maintaining and increasing economical, ecological and societal wellbeing. Digital transformation is already firmly anchored in the strategic orientation of many industrial companies, and at the same time we are on the threshold of a sustainability transformation. For sustainable business success, these two transformation processes must be considered integratively in the sense of a dual transformation. However, synergistically linking these processes requires substantial resources and know-how, which medium-sized companies in particular often cannot bear alone. Here, the transfer from application-oriented research can make valuable contributions. Based on the Design Science Research methodology we therefore conducted interviews and analyzed current literature from the areas of digitalization and sustainability in strategic management to define a research agenda. The research agenda provides nine dualities to be overcome along the three levels of management (normative, strategic and operative). The results aim to support medium-sized compannies in the industrial sector in tackling the dual transformation escpecially focusing on ecological sustainability.

Solid-state batteries (SSBs) are a promising emerging battery technology for electromobility application. Along with new technical opportunities (higher energy density, lower safety risks), they introduce new cell chemistry configurations and novel materials in use. This leads to increased complexity of material composition and may reduce the recyclability of SSBs. To ensure circularity of SSB materials, it is important to consider their recyclability at the early stage of SSB development. This paper proposes an approach for identification of target materials for recycling within three types of SSBs with polymer, oxide and sulfide electrolytes. To consider environmental and economic perspectives, interdependencies of material dilution, their cost and environmental material footprint are analyzed using Sherwood and global warming potential (GWP)-plots. Furthermore, a socio-geopolitical aspect of supply risk is considered as a relevant criterion for targeting materials. Li is identified as the main target material for all considered SSBs and Co as a further one for oxide- and sulfide-based cells. Furthermore, an upscaling scenario to a battery pack considered changes in concentration of target materials and revealed direct recycling of composite cathode LLZO and LCO to be very beneficial. Results of this approach can be used by SSB developers and recyclers in order to strive for holistic design enabling recycling of identified target materials.

Maintenance is pivotal in industry, with condition-based maintenance emerging as a key strategy. This involves monitoring the machine condition through sensor data analysis. Model-based approaches compare observed data with expected values from models, which requires high-quality models. An established method is to use simulation models, which in many cases produce good results but may lack precision due to uncertainties. Alternatively, models created by machine learning can detect patterns directly from data. This paper proposes combining simulation models with machine learning models, leveraging the simulation's a-priori knowledge and machine learning's data patterns to enhance models for condition monitoring. Recurrent neural networks are suggested as the machine learning method. The paper outlines a systematic approach and demonstrates its application in an industrial use case, which investigates vacuum processes in industrial furnaces.

Smart cities need high-quality data products in order to shape societal challenges such as the transformation of transportation and mobility. Trusted Data intermediary concepts are an important tool for enabling the sharing of data via standardized interfaces and ensuring trust and data quality. The ecosystem of a smart city comprises numerous organizations and extends far beyond the city's own boundaries, especially with regard to data products. Based on related work, this paper elaborates key terms of a data intermediary ecosystem concept that is planned to be applied at the interface between smart city and mobility on the one hand, and between municipalities and their municipal companies, science and industry on the other.
