Space debris is a growing problem and threat to future space missions. The number of objects in an earth's orbit increases exponentially as the costs of getting an object there continue to sink. This makes it easier for companies and research institutions to get small satellites or experimental satellites into orbit. Deorbiting of these objects after a failure or end of life is fundamental to ensure the safety of existing and future space missions. The H2020 *** project is developing a deorbit kit based on an electrodynamic low work function tether (LWT) coated with [Ca24Al28O64]4+(4e-) electride material (C12A7:e-). Due to an electrodynamic effect, one end of the LWT captures electrons from the ambient plasma while the opposite end emits electrons due to the thermionic and photoelectric effects. While moving through the Earth's magnetic field, the electric current through the tether generates a Lorentz force that drags the spacecraft towards earth. Before the demonstration mission of the deorbit kit, the functionality and space durability of the tether must be ensured. In order to determine the properties and suitability for space operation of the LWT, a test campaign for a number of samples was developed. The samples had to undergo various tests and measurements executed by Technische Universität Dresden (TUD), fraunhofer IKTS and German Aerospace Center (DLR) to examine the electrical and optical properties, as well as degradation behavior due to the space environment. The measurements to determine the material properties are: thermionic emission measurement, photocurrent density measurement and emissivity measurement. To examine space durability, the material underwent an atomic oxygen exposure test, an UV radiation exposure test and a thermal cycling test. The influence of these tests on the material properties was examined afterwards. This publication will provide an overview of the test plan and test procedures. Ultrafast fiber laser sources emitting fs-pulses around 2 µm have many applications in medicine, metrology and sensing as well as in various frequency-conversion techniques. Thulium-doped fiber amplifiers are a promising platform for power scalable ultrafast amplification in this wavelength region. Usually, these ultrafast, high-power fiber laser systems were pumped at a wavelength around 790 nm and obtain slope efficiencies in the range of 50 % in the 100 W-class. Due to the high quantum defect obtained with this pump technique and the related high heat loads, considerable thermal challenges still must be overcome when scaling the power further. In this contribution we present a concept on highly efficient, high-power thulium-doped fiber amplifiers pumped at 1692 nm. This pump concept is suitable for high-power, high-energy, ultrafast Tm-doped fiber laser systems. In this proof of principle demonstration, we achieve a slope efficiency of 80% in a standard commercially available, thulium-doped photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with ~60 W of average power when pumping at 1692 nm compared to 47 % slope efficiency by pumping at 793 nm. In the simulation we investigated the heat load and core temperature evaluation along the fiber. These findings demonstrate an improvement in the amplification efficiency of large-mode area fiber amplifiers which are suitable for ultrafast operation on Yb-like efficiencies. The reduced heat load paves the way to even higher average powers from ultrafast Tm-doped fiber lasers with the potential to provide multi-mJ energy fs-pulses at kW-level average power from a single amplifier channel. © 2023 SPIE.

The design of integrated circuits from the specification onward aims at the successful validation by silicon measurements. One key milestone in this process is the completion of the layout. This, however, is very challenging as many iterations are usually necessary due to parasitic effects. In order to address this challenge in analog layout design, our work extends procedural generator-based automation. A declarative array template is embedded into the common generator structure. Following this structure, generator code is automatically generated with a schematic as the input. Using this approach, a flexible generator is created immediately that allows automatic design of array-style layouts with template-based flexibility and at generator-based execution speed. In addition, the template enables early and fast parasitic estimates. Our combined approach contributes to analog layout automation by bridging the gap between generators and templates. © VDE VERLAG GMBH.

Electric propulsion systems are considered one possibility to reach the ambitious goals of the European Union’s Flightpath 2050 concerning greenhouse gas emissions and noise. This paper proposes an engineering architecture design of an electric motor for a propulsion system in a hybrid-electric regional aircraft. The project partners defined the performance requirements for the thrust of the propulsion system. The electric drive motor for the propellers was calculated and then simulated. The motor is specified in this paper, with the materials possible for construction.

Sustainability is a challenge for society that circular economy tries to tackle. The metaverse, as an emerging technology that incorporates digital twins and simulation in an immersive virtual environment, has not been thoroughly investigated in connection to circular economy. Thus, the purpose of this study is to summarize the potentials and barriers of the use of the metaverse for circular economy. By conducting a structured literature review, this paper categorizes the findings into dimensions that are important for both the metaverse and circular economy. A variety of potentials and barriers that cover different perspectives important for businesses aiming to comply with circular economy principles is discovered. The findings include potentials and barriers in several areas, like the access to the metaverse, connected costs, data, knowledge transfer, collaboration, innovation, product design, production planning, training of employees, and transportation. The results can be used to promote the implementation of circular economy principles.

This research study examines the applications of the industrial metaverse in supply chain management. Thus, it reviews and analyzes the up-to-date knowledge along the Supply Chain Operations Reference Model. Therefore, a structured literature review is conducted. We derive six core functionalities of the industrial metaverse in supply chains: visibility and monitoring, prediction, simulation, collaboration, training, and optimization. Furthermore, their presence along the different phases of a supply chain is investigated. Besides the functionalities, the relationship between the industrial metaverse and simulation applications and digital twins is analyzed, and a brief description of possible metaverse architectures is provided. This study additionally derives research gaps within the emerging field of metaverse applications and research and defines paths to tackle them.

High-power, ultrafast, thulium-doped (Tm) fiber-laser systems operating at a center wavelength around 2 μm are very beneficial for various applications in metrology and sensing, as well as for frequency conversion techniques such as high- harmonic generation [1]. With longer pulses, in the ns-region, Tm-fiber lasers could be an ideal platform for laser-plasma sources due to their high beam quality [2]. With the state-of-the-art, ~790 nm cladding pumping of Tm-doped, fused silica fiber amplifiers, the achieved slope efficiencies are barely above 50 % for ultrafast pulse amplification [3-5]. Furthermore, in the ns-region, targeting energy extraction at mJ-levels, the efficiencies do not exceed more than 15 % [6]. In addition, due to the low quantum-efficiency, there is a high heat load generated that could cause thermal problems during high-power operation and, therefore, prevents scaling these systems beyond the kW-level [7]. The quantum-defect related limitations can be overcome by pumping Tm gain media directly in the upper laser level. For high-power CW operation, the most common approach is to pump Tm gain media around 1.55 µm or 1.9 µm, which has already demonstrated remarkable slope efficiencies [8,9]. However, due to the high emission cross-section, the maximum storable energy at these pump wavelengths is quite low [10]. Therefore, a more suitable pump wavelength around 1.7 µm should be considered for highly energetic laser operation. © 2023 IEEE.

IGBT power modules have been equipped with temperature/humidity sensors and integrated into a power converter system from the wind-power application. While exposed to climatic cycles, the power converter has been tested power-in-the-loop in a climate chamber. The test profile is a sequence of actual stress conditions recorded in a wind turbine converter operating in the field. During the tests, the internal conditions of the power modules and the power cabinet have been monitored. The resulting microclimates are examined when varying electrical loads coincide with climatic cycles.

This paper presents measurements of temperature and humidity conditions in a power module during continuous pulse-width modulation (PWM) operation. Based on the results, a developed hygrothermal simulation model is validated. This can subsequently be used later to identify critical operating conditions which can create lifetime-reducing microclimates on the chip level. This approach enables the implementation of a condition monitoring system based on the microclimate inside the power module.

Additive Manufacturing (AM) is rapidly growing as a revolutionary technique. It provides an interesting ability to produce complex geometries, a key feature for enhancing performance and widening application fields of hardmetal components. Within this context, all the samples produced by AM [AMed] are expected to exhibit characteristics linked to the shaping route followed, which are also vital for defining their mechanical integrity. This work aims to study the correlation of the printing direction to the final microstructure, mechanical properties and layer assemblage at different length scales for a 12%wtCo-WC grade hardmetals of medium/coarse grain size consolidated by binder jetting 3D printing and subsequent sintering. Vickers macro- and micro-hardness as well as reciprocal scratch tests are conducted. The results are analysed and discussed in terms of printing orientation effects on microstructural variability, mechanical response, intrinsic physical behaviour of the material and feedstock used. © European Powder Metallurgy Association (EPMA)
