With the advances in information technology, the concept of Digital Twins has gained wide attention in both practice and research in recent years. A Digital Twin is a virtual representation of a physical object or system and is connected in a bi-directional way with the physical counterpart. The aim of a Digital Twin is to support all stakeholders during the whole lifecycle of such system or object. One of the core aspects of a Digital Twin is modeling and simulation, which is a well-established process, e.g., in the development of systems. Simulation models can be distinguished on the basis of different dimensions, e.g., on the basis of their time perspective. The existing literature reviews have paid little to no attention to this simulation aspect of a Digital Twin. In order to address this, the authors have developed a taxonomy based on an extended literature review to bridge the aforementioned gap.

Characterizing Quality of Experience for Demand Management in South Brazil

The present work delivers the results of a survey conducted in Florianópolis, on the southern region of Brazil, using a digital questionnaire which inquired about the interaction with demand management systems (DMSs) in a smart house context. In particular, the survey addressed the interviewees’ thoughts on demand management and gathered data to enable the design of Quality of Experience (QoE) based demand management policies. The investigation of QoE-aware approaches is significant as it enables the DMS to take decisions not only based on economic metrics, but also taking the discomfort caused to the users into account. The number of responses guaranteed a confidence level of 95% and an error margin of 4.63% and the content of such responses showed favorable disposition of the interviewees on allowing interventions of DMSs on their energy consumption habits as long as it reduces their expenses with energy. The data concerning discomfort caused by demand management actions on several home appliances was treated using clustering techniques and different typical user profiles were leveraged, represented by the centroid of each cluster. Those profiles can be used to deploy QoE-aware DMSs tailored for the local reality, which seem as a promising business model as smart houses become a reality. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. Microscopy with extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation holds promise for high-resolution imaging with excellent material contrast, due to the short wavelength and numerous element-specific absorption edges available in this spectral range. At the same time, EUV radiation has significantly larger penetration depths than electrons. It thus enables a nano-scale view into complex three-dimensional structures that are important for material science, semiconductor metrology, and next-generation nano-devices. Here, we present high-resolution and material-specific microscopy at 13.5 nm wavelength. We combine a highly stable, high photon-flux, table-top EUV source with an interferometrically stabilized ptychography setup. By utilizing structured EUV illumination, we overcome the limitations of conventional EUV focusing optics and demonstrate high-resolution microscopy at a half-pitch lateral resolution of 16 nm. Moreover, we propose mixed-state orthogonal probe relaxation ptychography, enabling robust phase-contrast imaging over wide fields of view and long acquisition times. In this way, the complex transmission of an integrated circuit is precisely reconstructed, allowing for the classification of the material composition of mesoscopic semiconductor systems. © 2021, CC BY.

Excitons in atomically thin transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have been established as an attractive platform to explore polaritonic physics, owing to their enormous binding energies and giant oscillator strength. Basic spectral features of exciton polaritons in TMD microcavities, thus far, were conventionally explained via two-coupled-oscillator models. This ignores, however, the impact of phonons on the polariton energy structure. Here we establish and quantify the threefold coupling between excitons, cavity photons, and phonons. For this purpose, we employ energy-momentum-resolved photoluminescence and spatially resolved coherent two-dimensional spectroscopy to investigate the spectral properties of a high-quality-factor microcavity with an embedded WSe2 van der Waals heterostructure at room temperature. Our approach reveals a rich multibranch structure which thus far has not been captured in previous experiments. Simulation of the data reveals hybridized exciton-photon-phonon states, providing new physical insight into the exciton polariton system based on layered TMDs.

The luminous intensity distribution from luminescent glass disks is investigated. For this, the disks are placed on top of an ultraviolet and a blue LED and the emission from the optically-activated glass is recorded in the far field. The luminous intensity distribution of the LED light and the Eu3+ luminescence is considered separately by filtering the LED excitation, the same applies to the measured total luminous flux. Angle-dependent spectra are also measured and the changes in color coordinates are examined versus the viewing angle. The experimental results of the luminous intensity distribution curves are compared with ray-tracing simulations. © 2019

Checking security compliance between models and code

It is challenging to verify that the planned security mechanisms are actually implemented in the software. In the context of model-based development, the implemented security mechanisms must capture all intended security properties that were considered in the design models. Assuring this compliance manually is labor intensive and can be error-prone. This work introduces the first semi-automatic technique for secure data flow compliance checks between design models and code. We develop heuristic-based automated mappings between a design-level model (SecDFD, provided by humans) and a code-level representation (Program Model, automatically extracted from the implementation) in order to guide users in discovering compliance violations, and hence, potential security flaws in the code. These mappings enable an automated, and projectspecific static analysis of the implementation with respect to the desired security properties of the designmodel. Reliability of design approaches for axially loaded offshore piles and its consequences with respect to the North Sea

In the near future, several offshore wind farms are planned to be built in the North Sea. Therefore, jacket and tripod constructions with mainly axially loaded piles are suitable as support structures. The current design of axial bearing resistance of these piles leads to deviant results regarding the pile resistance when different design methods are adopted. Hence, a strong deviation regarding the required pile length must be addressed. The reliability of a design method can be evaluated based on a model error which describes the quality of the considered design method by comparing measured and predicted pile bearing resistances. However, only few pile load tests are reported with regard to the boundary conditions in the North Sea. This paper presents 6 large-scale axial pile load tests which were incorporated within a new model error approach for the current design methods used for the axial bearing resistance,namely API Main Text method and cone penetration test(CPT)-based design methods, such as simplified ICP-05, offshore UWA-05, Fugro-05 and NGI-05 methods. Based on these new model errors, a reliabilitybased study towards the safety was conducted by performing a Monte-Carlo simulation. In addition,consequences regarding the deterministic pile design in terms of quality factors were evaluated. It is shown that the current global safety factor(GSF) prescribed and the partial safety factors are only valid for the API Main Text and the offshore UWA-05 design methods; whereas for the simplified ICP-05,Fugro-05 and NGI-05 design methods, an increase in the required embedded pile length and thus in the GSF up to 2.69, 2.95 and 3.27, respectively, should be considered to satisfy the desired safety level according to DIN EN 1990 of b ? 3.8. Further, quality factors for each design method on the basis of all reliability-based design results were derived. Hence, evaluation of each design method regarding the reliability of the pile capacity prediction is possible.

TABSOLAR^Ⓡ elements are novel (solar) thermal components made from ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) which can be used as designable glazed or unglazed façade cladding elements or thermo-active building systems for heating and/or cooling. They are produced with an innovative production technology which is developed in a current research project together with appropriate system concepts. In order to simplify the system design process and visualize possible TABSOLAR^Ⓡ façades on site, new software tools are being developed. Finally, a demonstration façade will be installed on a renovated two-family residential building. The ongoing interactive design process of this first use case is an important part of the project and the overall TABSOLAR^Ⓡ concept. © 2022

Insulating sheets, impregnants and encapsulation materials commonly used for winding insulation offer low thermal conductivities. This leads to an increased heating of the winding of electrical machines and to the existence of hotspots. The electromagnetical utilization of the machine has to be reduced with respect to the allowed maximum winding temperature. In this paper, the development and experimental investigation of novel polysiloxane composites with ceramic fillers are presented. The materials are tested by means of impregnated and encapsulated samples of a round-wire winding as well as the main insulation of electrical steel sheets and laminated cores. Numerical models are implemented for determining the equivalent thermal conductivity of the winding compound comprising the enameled wire and the impregnant. Based on the example of a permanent-magnet synchronous machine with outer-rotor in modular construction, the potential for increasing the electromagnetical utilization is shown.

For interconnected systems, we present a general procedure to include topology knowledge in an automated set-point optimization routine. This paper demonstrates an exemplary algorithm, applied to a parallel connection of two chillers for test purposes.
