Image registration is a fundamental medical image analysis task, and a wide variety of approaches have been proposed. However, only a few studies have comprehensively compared medical image registration approaches on a wide range of clinically relevant tasks. This limits the development of registration methods, the adoption of research advances into practice, and a fair benchmark across competing approaches. The Learn2Reg challenge addresses these limitations by providing a multi-task medical image registration data set for comprehensive characterisation of deformable registration algorithms. A continuous evaluation will be possible at https://***. Learn2Reg covers a wide range of anatomies (brain, abdomen, and thorax), modalities (ultrasound, CT, MR), availability of annotations, as well as intra- and inter-patient registration evaluation. We established an easily accessible framework for training and validation of 3D registration methods, which enabled the compilation of results of over 65 individual method submissions from more than 20 unique teams. We used a complementary set of metrics, including robustness, accuracy, plausibility, and runtime, enabling unique insight into the current state-of-the-art of medical image registration. This paper describes datasets, tasks, evaluation methods and results of the challenge, as well as results of further analysis of transferability to new datasets, the importance of label supervision, and resulting bias. While no single approach worked best across all tasks, many methodological aspects could be identified that push the performance of medical image registration to new state-of-the-art performance. Inexact Block Coordinate Descent Algorithms for Nonsmooth Nonconvex Optimization

In this paper, we propose an inexact block coordinate descent algorithm for large-scale nonsmooth nonconvex optimization problems. At each iteration, a particular block variable is selected and updated by solving the original optimization problem with respect to that block variable inexactly. More precisely, a local approximation of the original optimization problem is solved. The proposed algorithm has several attractive features, namely, i) high flexibility, as the approximation function only needs to be strictly convex and it does not have to be a global upper bound of the original function;ii) fast convergence, as the approximation function can be designed to exploit the problem structure at hand and the stepsize is calculated by the line search;iii) low complexity, as the approximation subproblems are much easier to solve and the line search scheme is carried out over a properly constructed differentiable function;iv) guaranteed (subsequence) convergence to a stationary point, even when the objective function does not have a Lipschitz continuous gradient. Interestingly, when the approximation subproblem is solved by a descent algorithm, (subsequence) convergence to a stationary point is still guaranteed even if the approximation subproblem is solved inexactly by terminating the descent algorithm after a finite number of iterations. These features make the proposed algorithm suitable for large-scale problems where the dimension exceeds the memory and/or the processing capability of the existing hardware. These features are also illustrated by several applications in signal processing and machine learning, for instance, network anomaly detection and phase retrieval. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. Zweidimensionale konjugierte metallorganische Gerüstverbindungen (2D c-MOFs) entwickeln sich zu einer einzigartigen Unterklasse von geschichteten kristallinen Koordinationspolymeren, die gleichzeitig Porosität und elektrische Leitfähigkeit besitzen und ein breites Anwendungspotenzial in Energiespeicherung und elektronischen Geräten haben. Um die intrinsischen elektronischen Eigenschaften und strukturellen Besonderheiten von 2D c-MOFs optimal nutzen zu können, ist die kontrollierte Synthese von hierarchisch nanostrukturierten 2D c-MOFs mit hoher Kristallinität und maßgeschneiderten Morphologien unerlässlich, was eine große Herausforderung darstellt. In diesem Artikel stellen wir eine Template-Strategie zur Synthese einer Bibliothek von 2D c-MOFs mit kontrollierten Morphologien und Dimensionen über eine Transformation von isolierenden MOFs zu c-MOFs vor. Die daraus resultierenden hierarchisch nanostrukturierten 2D c-MOFs weisen höhere intrinsische elektrische Leitfähigkeiten und größere Oberflächen als die literaturbeschriebenen 2D c-MOFs auf, was für einen verbesserten Zugang zu aktiven Seiten und einen verbesserten Massentransport von Vorteil ist. Als Proof-of-Concept-Anwendungen zeigen die hierarchisch nanostrukturierten 2D c-MOFs eine überlegene Leistung für Anwendungen welche auf ihren elektrischen Eigenschaften basieren (hohle Cu-BHT-Nanowürfel-basierte Superkondensatoren und Cu-HHB Nanoblumen-basierte chemiresistive Gassensoren). Diese erreichen eine Verbesserung der spezifischen Kapazität und der Ansprechintensität von über 225 % bzw. 250 % gegenüber den entsprechenden durch Bulk-Synthese erhaltenen c-MOFs.

Equation-based1 modelling of hybrid systems has to consider dynamical systems consisting of components with continuous and/or discrete behavior. The paper focuses on such systems under special consideration of systems with variable model structure. Some ideas are presented how a simulation of continuous and discrete phenomena can be handled correctly. The main process is a continuing alternation between continuous and discrete simulation phases, where in the discrete phase the changeover can be performed to a new model structure which is valid during the next continuous phase. The paper addresses the problem of finding a new valid model structure as a process within the discrete phase. This new valid model structure has to be found under consideration of the time history of the model’s variables within the preceding continuous phase. To this end, the usage of the Linear Complementarity Problem (LCP) is proposed. After a definition of hybrid systems and the term model structure, different types of events – with and without influence on the model structure – are listed and properties of complementarity are presented. To find the correct switchover from continuous to discrete phase, so-called indicator functions are used. On the contrary, to find the correct switchover from discrete to continuous phase, the LCP is applied. Some simulation results for an electromechanical system are briefly presented. © 2017 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Globalization and digitization of the economy increase the demand for fast and precise positioning services. Existing and new global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) add flexibility and adaptability to the list of requirements. To cope with these demands GNSS receivers have been built as software solutions. For software receivers satellite signal acquisition is a hard problem. In this paper we have focused on improving the efficiency of the acquisition in the receiver. The proposed method combines multiple frequency steps into a single one to acquire the satellites. By this means we reduce memory demand and the number of FFT/IFFT calculations for correlation calculation, which is crucial for the performance of a software receiver, in particular on an embedded platform. To eliminate the influence and ambiguity of the multi-frequency approach, we introduce a correction procedure after the basic acquisition process. In our approach we choose several candidate results to implement a more precise acquisition. Our experiments show that the multi-frequency acquisition method saves a significant amount of resources in the acquisition phase, even in a weak GPS signal environment.

Availability of Lithium Ion Batteries from Hybrid and Electric Cars for Second Use： How to Forecast for Germany until 2030

Due to growing numbers of sold HEV （hybrid electric vehicles）, PHEV （plug-in hybrid electric vehicles）, and BEV （battery electric vehicles）, new market opportunities to reuse or recycle old lithium ion batteries arise. Thus, a forecast of available batteries caused by accidents or from end-of-life vehicles was carried out using a mathematical model. Input data were obtained from an estimate of newly registered hybrid and electric vehicles in Germany from 2010 until 2030, from the accident rate of cars in Germany, and from the average cars’ lifetime. The results indicate that （a） the total amount of available second use batteries in 2030 will be between 130,000 units/year and 500,000 units/year, （b） the highest amount of batteries will be obtained from end-of-life vehicles not from accident vehicles, although most batteries from accident vehicles will be suitable for 2nd use, and （c） the quantity of hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric car batteries available for reuse will continue to rise after 2030.

The large oscillator strength of excitons in transition metal dichalcogenide layers facilitates the formation of exciton-polariton resonances for monolayers and van-der-Waals heterostructures embedded in optical microcavities. Here, we show, that locally changing the number of layers in a WSe2/hBN/WSe2 van-der-Waals heterostructure embedded in a monolithic, high-quality-factor cavity gives rise to a local variation of the coupling strength. This effect yields a polaritonic stair case potential, which we demonstrate at room temperature. Our result paves the way towards engineering local polaritonic potentials at length scales down to atomically sharp interfaces, based on purely modifying its real part contribution via the coherent light-matter coupling strength g. Healthcare providers in the field of physical and rehabilitation medicine play a vital role to help patients suffering spasticity readapting themselves to their normal daily activities. Mathematical modeling of spasticity has the potential to avoid the issue of variability in the assessment of spasticity using the Modified Ashworth scale (MAS). In this work, an existing mathematical model for upper limb spasticity is verified using clinical data sets of upper limb spasticity collected in Malaysia at the level of MAS 1+. The data set consists of torque values measured at each elbow angle as the elbow extends from a full flexion position to a full extension position during slow and fast stretch of the forearm. The aim is to find out the capability of the mathematical model and lay a foundation for the future work on data-driven modeling of upper limb spasticity based on the Modified Ashworth Scale.

For the evolving Internet-of-Things ubiquitous positioning is a core feature. Hence, energy- and location-awareness are essential properties of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). In terms low power consumption received signal strength (RSS)-based localization techniques outperform timing-based localization approaches. Therefore, RSS-based direction finding is prospective approach to location-aware, low-power sensor nodes. However, RSS-based direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation is prone to multipath propagation. In this paper, a subspace-based approach to frequency-domain multipath resolution is presented. Resolution of multipath components allows for a RSS-based DOA estimation considering the power of the line of sight (LOS) component only. The impact of the multipath channel is considerably reduced with our approach. In contrast to common broadband DOA estimation techniques, the presented approach does not need phase-coherent receive channels or a synchronized sensor network. Hence, the proposed super-resolution technique is applicable to low-power sensor networks and brings accurate positioning to small-sized and energy-efficient sensor nodes.
