An integrated CMOS image sensor with 128×128 pixels and local brightness adaptation suitable for machine vision and surveillance applications has been developed and successfully tested. Local brightness adaptation is achieved by dividing the input photocurrent of each sensor pixel by its local average. Since the irradiance at the imager is based on a nonlinear multiplicative combination of scene illumination and object surface reflectance, the output signal of the imager will depend only on the visually relevant reflectance component if the illumination does not significantly vary within the averaging area. The computation of local average is realized by spatial low-pass filtering the input photocurrent distribution using a 2D pseudo-resistive diffusion network. Division by local average inside each pixel is based on a translinear divider. The chip has been realized in a 1 µm n-well standard CMOS process. The pixel pitch is 53,4 µm and the total chip area is 68 mm 2 .

An integrated CMOS image sensor suitable for monitoring fast motion e.g. in very fast industrial processes, crash tests, and high speed machine vision has been developed and tested. The test chip contains 128×128 active sensor cells and it is equipped with an electronic shutter, advanced column current-mode readout circuits and column voltage buffers. For design and fabrication a standard 1.0 µm n-well CMOS process has been used. The size of a single pixel cell is 27.6 µm × 27.6 µm with a fill factor of 42% incorporating four NMOS transistors. The total chip area is 30mm 2 . The sensor cells show a linear response to illumination. The test chip is capable to acquire 1030 frames/s.

A digital imaging device is presented, which allows one-shot acquisition of high-resolution color images. A color depth of 12 bit is provided due to effective noise reduction and pixel correction circuitry. For image compression a wavelet-based algorithm is implemented, which exhibits no visible degradation of image quality at intended compression rates.

While the electronic properties of silicon are widely utilized in high-volume IC manufacturing, the use of its mechanical as well as its other properties is still lagging behind. Recent advances in IC-compatible micro-machining techniques, however, have created the technological basis for constructing miniature, high-precision, mechanical structures in and on silicon. Thus microsensors and microactuators can be merged together with sophisticated microelectronics to create microsystems. This tutorial shows that besides lowering manufacturing costs, the silicon integration of both sensors and electronics offers several other significant advantages.

A low-voltage low-noise amplifier fabricated in a CMOS/SIMOX technology is presented in this paper. Due to the dielectric isolation of the transistors, high resistivity substrates can be used. This also allows the integration of inductors and capacitors with quality factors suitable for the design of RF communication circuits. The center frequency of the presented amplifier is 1.8 GHz. Operating at 2 V supply voltage, the power gain is 16 dB, with a noise figure of 3.3 dB and the 1 dB compression point related to the output of 5 dBm. The power dissipation under these conditions amounts to 24 mW.

This article describes a novel approach to orientation and scale-invariant detection of textured objects in images. It performs both, a segmentation of multi-object scenes and the identification of rotation angles and scale rates of textures in an image by applying a comparison with reference texture features stored in a database. The main novelty of the proposed method is the transform of rotation and dilation into shifts in the feature space by employing a polar-log Gabor filter bank. Texture segmentation and identification of the rotation angles and scale rates have been carried out using symmetric phase only matched filters. The simulation results illustrated highlight the performance of the presented method in an exemplary manner.

A smart pressure transducer with a piezo resistive pressure sensor microbridge, digitally controlled readout electronics, and a nonlinear temperature compensation based on spline functions, is integrated on a single CMOS chip. The chip also contains a temperature sensor and control hardware for test and calibration functions. The calibration process of the sensing and temperature compensation parameters has been optimized for high volume production. The smart pressure transducer is in standard 2 /spl mu/m n-well CMOS technology completed by anisotropic cavity etching.

This paper presents a 1st order sigma-delta-modulator with µ-law coding for dynamic compression of audio signals. The nonlinearity is located in the feedback loop of the modulator and does not require an internal multibit A/D converter. The modulator requires just one opamp, one comparator, and a minimum of digital logic to generate a four bit feedback and to ensure a stable operation. The µ-law-function for µ=255 is approximated by a standardised piecewise linear 16 segment function which is commonly used in telecommunication. The chip has been designed and fabricated in a standard 1.5µm n-well CMOS process, occupies a die area of 2 mm 2 , and has been successfully tested.
