A novel integrated CMOS circuit for signal compression of analog sampled-data signals is presented. It provides charge readout and amplification featuring very high dynamic range, which is useful in applications of capacitive detector arrays or capacitive sensors. The output voltage is proportional to the square-root of the input signal. In this contribution we describe the circuit chip and demonstrate its operation.

A very small integrated ultrasonic signal processing chip for intraluminal catheter systems is presented. This chip can be used to transmit and receive signals in the range of 20 MHz to an ultrasonic array with a high number of transducers to provide images of cavities as small as 2.5 mm. The circuit concept is optimized for extreme requirements concerning signal frequency, chip size and power consumption. The chip is fabricated in a 1.5 μm CMOS process.

An integrated CMOS image acquisition system suitable for retinal information processing in bionic vision systems or product inspection has been developed and tested. It supports the readout of arbitrarily user-defined subregions. The test chip incorporates 32×32 random addressable active sensor cells arranged on a hexagonal grid and on-chip control and readout electronics. It has been designed and fabricated in a standard 1.5 μm n-well CMOS process. The size of a single sensor cell is 38.8 μm × 33.6 μm and the total chip area is 7 mm 2 . The sensor cells show a logarithmic response in illumination and are capable of detecting illumination variations with frequencies well above 1 MHz.

This work describes the architecture and planned realization of components for a retina implant which includes a sensory device for image acquisition, biologically inspired neural nets for modeling and computation of receptive field functions, and a human interface for electrostimulation of ganglion cells. The system will be used to generate visual sensations based on captured visual images for patients with degenerated retina functions. Special CMOS circuitry will be developed for an integrated photodetector array with preprocessing according to the requirements for biology inspired spatio-temporal signal processing. Also, the development will include a flexible silicon multielectrode structure with microelectronic action potential generation for stimulation of intact retinal ganglion cells and a wireless communication interface linking the external retina encoder hardware and the implanted stimulator hardware.

A light-sensitive PMOS-transistor located in a floating n-well and combined with an analog EEPROM has been fabricated as a single element in a standard 1.5 /spl mu/m single-poly CMOS/EEPROM technology. It provides nonvolatile weighted analog image storage and can be programmed in parallel, if implemented as an array. As an example, an image sensor with a nonvolatile analog programmable offset and sensitivity adjustment has been realised.

In this paper a digitally programmable readout electronics for resistive sensor bridges is presented together with an efficient method for calibration based on the principle of piecewise linear interpolation. The calibration enables a temperature compensation in the range between -40/spl deg/C and +120/spl deg/C. The architecture also allows an automatic calibration process with a minimum expenditure of external hardware. In addition the system contains an implemented function for monitoring the resistive sensor bridge condition during operation. For automotive applications an integrated voltage regulator is available so that the chip can optionally operate either at a stabilized 5 V power supply voltage or use an unregulated voltage in the range between 7.5 V and 16 V.

This paper describes first results of a monolithically integrated smart power device which uses a vertical Trench-DMOS as a power switch and a signal and control circuit fabricated in a SOI-CMOS technology (SOI: silicon on insulator). The vertical dielectric isolation between the Trench-DMOS and the control circuit is formed by the SIMOX-Process (SIMOX: separation by implanted oxygen) and the lateral isolation is realized by the LOGOS technology. The self-protection of the entire device is achieved by measuring the temperature and the load current of the power transistor. The protection is provided by analog and digital CMOS circuits with a supply voltage of 15 V. This device can be used, for example, as an "intelligent" switch in a dimmer circuit for automotive application.

This contribution describes a fully integrated field segment photo sensor for use in single lens reflex cameras. It supplies measurement data from five segments and the integral value via a standard interface io the camera processor. Individual calibration data of each sensor is stored In an on-chip EEPROM. The IC has been manufactured in a standard CMOS technology. The sensor operates over more than six decades of illumination to below 1 mlux. It represents an example of complex smart sensor integration.

A new 8 bit microcontroller with reduced instruction set has been designed. The controller, code named T2, has been developed especially for embedded controller applications which require multitasking and fast interrupt handling at medium data throughput. Furthermore the architecture was designed to be programmed in C. To support these requirements, the controller has 256 programmer visible registers and 256 Byte of on chip RAM. The instruction set consists of (basically) 20 instructions and instruction groups and provides an efficient target for C compilers. The instruction set and the datapath width may be adapted to the application needs using a full top-down synthesis flow. The address width for external and program memory is 16 bit. The target clock frequency is 16 MHz. The industrial significance of this development is shown by the rapidly growing demand for code efficient HLL-programming in the "embedded" market.
