This contribution presents an integrated linear image sensor array with programmable on-chip sensor processing, which has been fabricated in standard CMOS technology. The sensor is based on active pixel sensing principle which utilizes high light sensitivity of a standard PMOS transistor located in a floating n-well. The on-chip signal processing circuitry can be programmed to realize a wide variety of signal processing functions.

This paper describes techniques and methods used to realize a seventh order switched capacitor low pass filter in SIMOX technology. The filter has bessel characteristic and a 3dB-bandwidth of 20Hz at a clock frequency of 100kHz. Special design of transistors and transmission gates results in drastically reduced leakage currents. The power supply voltage is 10V. The temperature range is extended up to 300°C. Experimental results of this filter are presented.

The sensor presented here has been developed for the measurement of absolute pressure in the fields of automotive and industrial applications. The integration of the system consists of a pressure sensor and a signal conditioning circuit with an analog output on a chip of 3.6 mm/sup 2/. The fabrication technique to form the sensor is surface micromachining implemented in a standard 1.5/spl mu/m CMOS process allowing the construction of very small pressure sensor elements with excellent mechanical properties. The temperature coefficient of the hole system is lower than 200 ppm//spl deg/C without any compensation. It can be used in a temperature range of -40/spl deg/C to +125/sp deg/C.

A 3rd order active lowpass filter for antialiasing and smoothing applications, which is based on distributed RC elements, is presented together with a procedure for optimum design of this type of filter. When compared to filters using lumped resistors and capacitors, distributed filters offer steeper stopband roll-off, higher crosstalk insensitivity, and require smaller chip area.

In this paper we present a new biology-inspired neuron model and its real-time realization using a dedicated neural hardware emulator. The biological neuron model overcomes the limitations of classical neuron models by including dynamic features such as adaptive synaptic delays. The emulator used for its realization is based on a special communication processor optimized for the global exchange of pulse messages between neuron processors. The use of the model together with the emulator in real-time adaptive signal processing is shown using an example in the field of fault-tolerant adaptive beamforming.

A low-cost 1.5 V A/D converter has been realized in standard CMOS technology. It is based on a novel low-voltage switched-capacitor technique with a differential signal path. The conversion is programmable and insensitive to the capacitor ratio and the amplifier offset voltage. A complete n-bit conversion needs 3n clock cycles. The chip area is 6.8 mm 2 in a 1.5 μm CMOS technology with threshold voltages of 0.8V.

We present a segmentation algorithm for multichannel image analysis. It is based on a novel method that significantly improves the segmentation performance with respect to both homogeneity of the segmented regions and precision of the segmented region boundaries. The algorithm yields excellent results in comparison with other segmentation algorithms that are based on feature space clustering followed by minimum distance classification, as is shown in some segmentation examples. The main idea of the algorithm is the iterative feedback of the knowledge about the analysed image that has been obtained from preceding segmentation results. It needs just a stack of feature images and the indication of the number of required classes for input data. Therefore, it has a broad field of possible applications, especially in multichannel image analysis.< >

The ASIC was developed as the central component in an implantable data acquisition system, its first application being as an implant for the acquisition of ECG, heart muscle elasticity and electrolyte composition data of transplanted hearts. It allows daily monitoring of tissue rejection at the patient's home, using an RF link to a small receiver (local host) that forwards the data to a remote hospital computer via a modem.

This work describes a parallel neural network emulator which combines use of application-specific VLSI communication processors and standard DSPs as programmable processing elements. Locally interconnected communication processors attached to each DSP can span up to 2D- or 3D-grids containing large number of computing nodes and thus form highly parallel multiprocessor networks capable of global pipelined packet switched routing. The use of standard DSPs as processing elements enables the emulation of different types of neurons. These include biologically inspired models with learnable synaptic weights and delays, variable neuron gain, and static and dynamic thresholding. We describe applications of the emulator that include neural robot control as well as temporal signal processing, e.g. beamforming.
