A new off-grid Hybrid Energy system (HES) for Dier El Balah quarantine center (middle Gaza Strip, Palestine) that was built to host the infected Corona virus (COVID-19) people is studied. The proposed system is made up of three energy sources mainly photovoltaic (PV), wind, and a diesel generator. The HES is developed to adequately supply a load of 3952 KW/day. The technical and economic considerations are presented. HOMER program is used to develop an optimal system from the practical view point. The results revealed the potential of the HES to provide environment friendly, cost-effective and affordable electricity for the Dier El Balah quarantine center, as compared to using only diesel generators with lowest COE equals 0.348 US$/kWh. © 2021, CC BY.

Deflectometry for specular surfaces: An overview

Deflectometry as a technical approach to assessing reflective surfaces has now existed for almost 40 years. Different aspects and variations of the method have been studied in multiple theses and research articles, and reviews are also becoming available for certain subtopics. Still a field of active development with many unsolved problems, deflectometry now encompasses a large variety of application domains, hardware setup types, and processing workflows designed for different purposes, and spans a range from qualitative defect inspection of large vehicles to precision measurements of microscopic optics. Over these years, many exciting developments have accumulated in the underlying theory, in the systems design, and in the implementation specifics. This diversity of topics is difficult to grasp for experts and nonexperts alike and may present an obstacle to a wider acceptance of deflectometry as a useful tool in other research fields and in the industry. This paper presents an attempt to summarize the status of deflectometry, and to map relations between its notable "spin-off" branches. The intention of the paper is to provide a common communication basis for practitioners and at the same time to offer a convenient entry point for those interested in learning and using the method. The list of references is extensive but definitely not exhaustive, introducing some prominent trends and established research groups in order to facilitate further selfdirected exploration by the reader. Gaining added value from industrial data is a challenging process. It is often unknown which data is available, in what form and what it means. In addition, the infrastructure to integrate the data into appropriate services is often missing. Another challenge is the heterogeneity of solutions, technologies and infrastructure on the shop floor. This paper presents a solution that integrates industrial data based on Industrie 4.0 technologies from the shop floor and provides it to a knowledge platform. The proposed solution is working as autonomous and automated as possible. The existing data and metadata are used to automatically configure and instantiate the components of the platform. Users and Services can interact with the platform to search for required data. To achieve this, components were developed to collect data from the production. Furthermore, there is a knowledge platform where the data is prepared, stored and searched. This platform interacts with a middleware and services so that the data arrives automatically at its desired destination. The solution was evaluated through an implementation, showing that the usage of meta data is enabling a fast and easy integration of data in the digital services for Industrie 4.0. © 2020 IEEE.

The Amazon has 25% terrestrial biodiversity, and its basin generates 16% of the planet's surface clear water. However, mining threatens this region through increasing deforestation. This study evaluated land use/land cover changes (LULC) to identify the impact of mining activities on the sides of the Punino River between 2019 and 2023. The study was divided into three stages: i) Sentinel 2 satellite image acquisition and processing in the Google Earth Engine (GEE), ii) LULC classification by extracting spectral indices and applying the Random Forest algorithm, and iii) calculation of transition arrays in ArcGIS Pro to quantify the spatial variation between classes. The results revealed alterations in the turbidity of the river channel associated with 836 hectares of newly deforested areas and 217 hectares of new mining settlements. This proposal allowed us to identify the effects of mining on the forest and river biomes of the Amazon.

Underwater communication becomes more and more important because the number of UUVs (unmanned underwater vehicles) and ROVs (remotely operated vehicles) used in underwater applications rises. These robots collect data from exploration and or inspection tasks and need to transfer them to be processed or *** are several methods of wireless underwater data transfer. Communication with acoustic waves is the most widespread. Another method uses LEDs for optical communication. Electromagnetic waves are rarely used due to their poor propagation under *** paper examines the possibilities of underwater data transmission for short distances with a high bandwidth. The approach is chosen because acoustic communication has a very low bandwidth and optical methods are heavily dependent on the environmental conditions (turbidity etc.).Acoustic methods have a very long range compared to other transmission methods, but the bandwidth is not sufficient to quickly transfer larger amounts of data. Furthermore, the corresponding latency is too large for realtime communication. Acoustic transmission methods are mostly used to send indirect commands to an AUV (autonomous underwater vehicle).Communication with optical signals is a suitable approach for short to medium distances. Depending on the water quality and ambient light, the light signals are attenuated relatively strong over the distance. In addition, direct visual contact between receiver and transmitter is *** transmission with electromagnetic waves offers a shorter latency time, faster data transmission and widely used standards compared to the other methods. After the use of analog transmission standards, information technology raised the need for a wireless data transfer. Change detection is an important tool for processing multiple epochs of mobile LiDAR data in an efficient manner, since it allows to cope with an otherwise time-consuming operation by focusing on regions of interest. State-of-the-art approaches usually either do not handle the case of incomplete observations or are computationally expensive. We present a novel method based on a combination of point clouds and voxels that is able to handle said case, thereby being computationally less expensive than comparable approaches. Furthermore, our method is able to identify special classes of changes such as partially moved, fully moved and deformed objects in addition to the appeared and disappeared objects recognized by conventional approaches. The performance of our method is evaluated using the publicly available TUM City Campus datasets, showing an overall accuracy of 88%. © 2020 Copernicus GmbH. All rights reserved.

The coastline of the German Wadden Sea is constantly subjected to the tides and the tidal-induced environmental changes like erosion and accumulation of sediments need to be monitored constantly. This task requires digital elevation models (DEMs), which are derived from remote sensing data. To model those DEMs, a separation of data collected over landmasses and water bodies is required. In the GeoWAM project the potential of airborne SAR-data (F-SAR) is investigated for monitoring purposes in the Wadden Sea. As part of the project, this paper focuses on the suitability of F-SAR data regarding the derivation of water-land-boundaries (WLBs). Therefore, water-land-boundaries based on independent data sets are compared and evaluated. Analyzed data sets include data collected via F-SAR, airborne laserscanning (ALS), on site GNSS measured WLB points and sea-level data from two acoustic gauges. The algorithms were tested on a study site on Spiekeroog island. Our results show, that the accuracies of the derived WLBs mostly depend on the on-site topography and sediments. The spatial deviation between the reference data and the approximated WLBs is mostly less than 2 m horizontally and 0.15 m vertically. Identified challenges to overcome are mostly related to processing of F-SAR data in areas with highly water saturated sediments. Our results suggest, that F-SAR data in tidal flats is not necessarily dependent on further supplementing surveys, as one of the main advantages of the F-SAR data is the potential to derive DEMs and WLBs from the same data set. © Copyright: Author(s) 2021.

The MODISSA testbed: A multi-purpose platform for the prototypical realization of vehicle-related applications using optical sensors

We present the current state of development of the sensor-equipped car MODISSA, with which fraunhofer IOSB realizes a configurable experimental platform for hardware evaluation and software development in the contexts of mobile mapping and vehicle-related safety and protection. MODISSA is based on a van which has successively been equipped with a variety of optical sensors over the past few years, and which contains hardware for complete raw data acquisition, georeferencing, real-time data analysis, and immediate visualization on in-car displays. We demonstrate the capabilities of MODISSA by giving a deeper insight into experiments with its specific configuration in the scope of three different applications. Other research groups can benefit from these experiences when setting up their own mobile sensor system, especially regarding the selection of hardware and software, the knowledge of possible sources of error, and the handling of the acquired sensor data.
