Aiming at the problems of high equipment composition complexity, long idle time of idle machines, and difficulty in online optimization of energy consumption in the production system that adopts the "immediate rework"mechanism, an online energy consumption optimization method for rework production systems is proposed. A digital model of production system energy consumption for the "immediate rework"mechanism is established, and real-time data is integrated to realize online energy consumption optimization based on the optimal buffer threshold. Taking the module production line of a battery workshop of a new energy vehicle factory as the application object, the online energy consumption optimization system of the rework production line of the workshop is designed and developed, and the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method are verified. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The rapid increase in the complexity of systems, especially due to the integration of subsystems from different domains into cyber-physical systems, presents unique challenges for efficient verification and validation (V&V) processes to meet all requirements and system properties. To address these challenges and enhance quality assurance processes, it is essential to document and analyze V&V workflows. This paper proposes VVML, a novel approach for easy modeling of V&V activities in different industrial domains with varying constraints, V&V methods, and tool chains. This approach includes a dedicated modeling notation and a supporting modelling tool, enabling the creation of reusable workflows assets, such as V&V activities and artifacts, which can be shared across workflows. The VVML approach has been applied to 10+ industrial use cases. This paper explains the basic principles behind VVML and shows an example of its application to an industrial use case.

In seeking to complement consultants' and tool vendors' reports, there has been an increasing academic focus on understanding the adoption and use of software development methods and practices. We surveyed practitioners working in Brazil, Finland, and New Zealand in a transnational study to contribute to these efforts. Among our findings we observed that most of the 184 practitioners in our sample focused on a small portfolio of projects that were of short duration. In addition, Scrum and Kanban were used most;however, some practitioners also used conventional methods. Coding Standards, Simple Design and Refactoring were used most by practitioners, and these practices were held to be largely suitable for project and process management. Context: Contemporary software development is typically conducted in dynamic, resource-scarce environments that are prone to the accumulation of technical debt. While this general phenomenon is acknowledged, what remains unknown is how technical debt specifically manifests in and affects software processes, and how the software development techniques employed accommodate or mitigate the presence of this debt. Objectives: We sought to draw on practitioner insights and experiences in order to classify the effects of agile method use on technical debt management, given the popularity and perceived success of agile methods. We explore the breadth of practitioners' knowledge about technical debt;how technical debt is manifested across the software process;and the perceived effects of common agile software development practices and processes on technical debt. In doing so, we address a research gap in technical debt knowledge and provide novel and actionable managerial recommendations. Method: We designed, tested and executed a multi-national survey questionnaire to address our objectives, receiving 184 responses from practitioners in Brazil, Finland, and New Zealand. Results: Our findings indicate that: 1) Practitioners are aware of technical debt, although, there was under utilization of the concept, 2) Technical debt commonly resides in legacy systems, however, concrete instances of technical debt are hard to conceptualize which makes it problematic to manage, 3) Queried agile practices and processes help to reduce technical debt;in particular, techniques that verify and maintain the structure and clarity of implemented artifacts (e.g., Coding standards and Refactoring) positively affect technical debt management. Conclusions: The fact that technical debt instances tend to have characteristics in common means that a systematic approach to its management is feasible. Emergencies often happen in a random and unexpected way, and operational forces must take immediate actions to reduce damages to the affected properties and people. Contextual information provides emergency response teams with an overview of the ongoing emergency and allows better decision making, such as the coordination of operational forces and resources provisioning. In this paper, we present the Emergency State Builder (ESB), acentral component we designed to aggregate contextual information about emergencies from multiple data sources with emphasis on fires, explosions, gas leaks and environmental damage incidents. The ESB is our answer to the challenge and providing timely, reliable and relevant contextual information to other components of a emergency management platform, called RESCUER, and, ultimately, to the emergency response teams. To illustrate the applicability of this work, we present how the RESCUER Public Communication module (RESCUER News) benefited from the information provided by ESB. © 2017 IEEE.

This article introduces our work on the Macchinetta framework that we developed in order to produce web-based enterprise applications more efficiently on the Macchinetta tool suite that commonizes development tools, and on the Macchinetta talent pool that provides talented developers to support efficient development.

Code Smells indicate potential flaws in software design that can lead to costly consequences. To mitigate the bad effects of Code Smells, it is necessary to detect and fix defective code. Programmatic processing of Code Smells is not new. Previous works have focused on detection and representation to support the analysis of faulty software. However, such works are based on a syntactic operation, without taking advantage on semantic properties of the software. On the other hand, there are several ways to provide semantic support in software development as a whole. Ontologies, for example, have recently been usedl. The application of ontologies for inferring semantic mechanisms to aid software engineers in dealing with smells may be of great value. As little attention has been given to this, we propose an ontology-based approach to analyze the occurrence of Code Smells in software projects. First, we present a comprehensive ontology that is capable of representing Code Smells and their association with software projects. We also introduce a tool that can manipulate our ontology in order to provide processing of Code Smells as it mines software source-code. Finally, we conducted an initial evaluation of our approach in a real usage scenario with two large open-source software repositories. ©2017 by SCITEPRESS - Science and Technology Publications, Lda. Supporting defect causal analysis in practice with cross-company data on causes of requirements engineering problems

[Context] Defect Causal Analysis (DCA) represents an efficient practice to improve software processes. While knowledge on cause-effect relations is helpful to support DCA, collecting cause-effect data may require significant effort and time. [Goal] We propose and evaluate a new DCA approach that uses cross-company data to support the practical application of DCA. [Method] We collected cross-company data on causes of requirements engineering problems from 74 Brazilian organizations and built a Bayesian network. Our DCA approach uses the diagnostic inference of the Bayesian network to support DCA sessions. We evaluated our approach by applying a model for technology transfer to industry and conducted three consecutive evaluations: (i) in academia, (ii) with industry representatives of the fraunhofer project center at UFBA, and (iii) in an industrial case study at the Brazilian National Development Bank (BNDES). [Results] We received positive feedback in all three evaluations and the cross-company data was considered helpful for determining main causes. [Conclusions] Our results strengthen our confidence in that supporting DCA with cross-company data is promising and should be further investigated. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. Investigating factors that affect the human perception on god class detection: an analysis based on a family of four controlled experiments

Evaluation of design problems in object oriented systems, which we call code smells, is mostly a human-based task. Several studies have investigated the impact of code smells in practice. Studies focusing on human identification of code smells have shown low agreement among developers. Unfortunately, those studies do not attempt to investigate the reasons behind this phenomenon. This paper aims to investigate factors affecting human perception of code smells. Specifically, it focuses on factors affecting god class detection, one of the most known code smells. The investigation encompassed a family of four controlled experiments, covering potential factors affecting human detection of code smells. The method is incremental. In other words, each experiment produces insights to the next one. This allows the investigators to control specific factors affecting the agreement on god class detection. The factors addressed in this study are: i) developer experience, ii) developer knowledge, iii) developer training, iv) tool support for design comprehension, and v) software size. Our findings show that tool support for design comprehension is the only factor that does not affect the human perception of god class. The other factors impact this perception in some way. The area still needs more investigation and discussion on what we call the code smell conceptualization problem, to ensure similar criteria and thresholds on human-based code smell detection.

The main objective of the Offshore Code Comparison Collaboration Continuation, with Correlation (OC5) project, is validation of aero-hydro-servo-elastic simulation tools for offshore wind turbines (OWTs) through comparison of simulated results to the response data of physical systems. Phase III of the OC5 project analyzes the Senvion 5M wind turbine supported by the OWEC Quattropod from the alpha ventus offshore wind farm. This paper shows results of the verification of the OWT models (code-to-code comparison). A subsequent publication will focus on their validation (comparison of simulated results to measured physical system response data). Based on the available data, the participants of Phase III set up numerical models of the OWT in their simulation tools. It was necessary to verify and to tune these models. The verification and tuning were performed against an OWT model available at the University of Stuttgart - Stuttgart Wind Energy (SWE) and documentation provided by Senvion and OWEC Tower. A very good match was achieved between the results from the reference SWE model and models set up by OC5 Phase III participants. © Copyright 2018 ASME.
