Emergencies often happen in a random and unexpected way, and operational forces must take immediate actions to reduce damages to the affected properties and people. Contextual information provides emergency response teams with an overview of the ongoing emergency and allows better decision making, such as the coordination of operational forces and resources provisioning. In this paper, we present the Emergency State Builder (ESB), acentral component we designed to aggregate contextual information about emergencies from multiple data sources with emphasis on fires, explosions, gas leaks and environmental damage incidents. The ESB is our answer to the challenge and providing timely, reliable and relevant contextual information to other components of a emergency management platform, called RESCUER, and, ultimately, to the emergency response teams. To illustrate the applicability of this work, we present how the RESCUER Public Communication module (RESCUER News) benefited from the information provided by ESB.

software development and maintenance activities can be negatively impacted by the presence of technical debt. One of its consequences is the software quality decrease. In order to produce better software, the evolution of technical debt needs to be monitored. However, this is not a trivial task since it usually requires the analysis of large amount of data and different types of debt. The areas of metrics and software visualization can be used to facilitate the monitoring of technical debt. This paper presents an open source tool called VisMinerTD that uses software metrics and visualization to support developers in software comprehension activities including the identification and monitoring of technical debt. VisMinerTD brings a new perspective to the hard work of identifying and monitoring technical debt evolution on software projects. Moreover, the user can easily plug new metrics and new visual metaphors to address specific technical debt identification and monitoring activities. software Product Line engineering (SPLE) emerges for software organizations interested in customized products at reasonable costs. Based on the selection of features, stakeholders can derive programs satisfying a range of functional properties and non-functional ones. The explicit definition of Non-Functional Properties (NFP) during software configuration has been considered a challenging task. Dealing with them is not well established yet, neither in theory nor in practice. In this sense, we present a framework to specify NFP for SPLE and we also propose a reuse approach that promotes the reuse of NFP values during the product configuration. We discuss the results of a case study aimed to evaluate the applicability of the proposed work. Copyright 2015 ACM.

Context. software Product Lines (SPL) has become one of the most prominents way to promote the systematic reuse of software artifacts. Like any other piece of software, with the SPL aging, it becomes necessary to manage their evolution. However, in this process, engineers might introduce divergences among the SPL artifacts. Thus, a number of initiatives address the management of such inconsistencies. Objective. In this paper, we mapped the existing approaches to inconsistency management within SPL. Method. We used the systematic mapping study methodology. Results. We classified and performed a characterization of the approaches found, which we mangaged to arrange in three main categories. Most papers selected proposed new methods as solution research. Besides, there is still a need for validation and evaluation studies. Conclusion. We identified a lack of support for a number of activities of consistency assurance. For instance, no paper addressed the tracking of findings, decisions, and actions, as well as, few papers describing either the handling or a management policy for identified inconsistencies. This paper describes an ontology created for the RESCUER1 (Reliable and Smart Crowdsourcing Solution for Emergency and Crisis Management), a project funded by the European Union and the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. RESCUER uses crowdsourcing information for supporting Industrial Parks (InPa) and Security Forces during an emergency situation. The proposal, EDXL-RESCUER ontology, is based on EDXL (Emergency Data Exchange Language), and it aims to be the RESCUER conceptual model related to the coordinating and exchanging of information with legacy systems. The ontology was evaluated with end-users during a workshop and the results show that EDXL-RESCUER is adequate for Emergency and Crisis domain in InPa and Security forces contexts. Specifically, this paper presents an update of EDXL-RESCUER ontology based on a faceted taxonomy approach.

In seeking to complement consultants' and tool vendors' reports, there has been an increasing academic focus on understanding the adoption and use of software development methods and practices. We surveyed practitioners working in Brazil, Finland, and New Zealand in a transnational study to contribute to these efforts. Among our findings we observed that most of the 184 practitioners in our sample focused on a small portfolio of projects that were of short duration. In addition, Scrum and Kanban were used most; however, some practitioners also used conventional methods. Coding Standards, Simple Design and Refactoring were used most by practitioners, and these practices were held to be largely suitable for project and process management. Our evidence points to the need to properly understand and support a wide range of software methods.

The use of mobile applications for business tasks calls for effective quality assurance during development to prevent potential failures of the mobile application and the consequential costs. Essential activities of quality assurance are to inspect the requirements specification and to test the realized mobile application. Both activities ideally benefit from the knowledge of typical failure patterns in order to guide quality assurance engineers and to focus the quality assurance, i.e., to direct the attention of quality assurance on these failure patterns. For this purpose, a mobile-specific failure pattern classification was derived in previous work. In this paper, we introduce an initial quality assurance approach, which considers inspection and testing in a combined way and methodically uses the classification within the mobile context. The developed method FIT4Apps, which is based on the flexible, efficient reading technique perspective-based reading, allows purposeful use of the proposed failure pattern classification. As proof of concept, we developed a tool prototype, which generates basic perspective-based scenarios considering the derived failure pattern classification in order to support inspection and testing activities. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Context: Distributed software development is a modern practice in software industry. This is especially true in Open Source software (OSS) community. In this context, developers are normally distributed around the world. In addition, most of them work for free and without or with low coordinating. Understanding how developers' practices are on those projects may guide communities to successfully manage their projects. Goal: We mined two repositories of the Apache Httpd project in order to gather information about its developers' behavior. Method: We developed an approach to cross data gathered from mail list and source code repository through mining techniques. The approach uses software visualization to analyze the mined data. We conducted an experimental evaluation of the approach to assess the behavioral patterns from OSS development community. Results: Our results show Apache developers' behavior patterns. In addition, we deepen the analysis of the Preferred Representational system of four top developers presented by Colaço et. al in (Colaço et al., 2010). Conclusion: The use of data mining and software visualization to analyze data from different sources can spot important properties of development processes. Context: software product lines (SPLs) and Agile are approaches that share similar objectives. The main difference is the way in which these objectives are met. Typically evidence on what activities of Agile and SPL can be combined and how they can be integrated stems from different research methods performed separately. The generalizability of this evidence is low, as the research topic is still relatively new and previous studies have been conducted using only one research method. Objective: This study aims to increase understanding of Agile SPL and improve the generalizability of the identified evidence through the use of a multi-method approach. Method: Our multi-method research combines three complementary methods (Mapping Study, Case Study and Expert Opinion) to consolidate the evidence. Results: This combination results in 23 findings that provide evidence on how Agile and SPL could be combined. Conclusion: Although multi-method research is time consuming and requires a high degree of effort to plan, design, and perform, it helps to increase the understanding on Agile SPL and leads to more generalizable evidence. The findings confirm a synergy between Agile and SPL and serve to improve the body of evidence in Agile SPL. When researchers and practitioners develop new Agile SPL approaches, it will be important to consider these synergies. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
