Context. Researchers are increasingly resorting of secondary studies (e.g. systematic literature reviews and mapping studies) in software engineering. This method is strongly dependent on the source of primary studies adopted, which is a bias. We did not find guidelines or benchmarks to evaluate the sources in a systematic way. Objective. In this paper we aim to tackle the selection of electronic data sources while conducting such kind of studies evaluating the equilibrium between the volume and number of relevant papers. Method. In this sense, we proceed towards a secondary study to analyze the overlapping of three different electronic data sources. We also compared our results with other similar studies. Results. Our results show minimum overlapping and no effortless combination of electronic data sources at all. Conclusion. We conclude that researchers shall resort of completeness to work with a feasible set of papers to review. Specially in secondary studies adopting general and no standardized terms. software evolution produces large amounts of data which software engineers need to understand for their daily activities. The use of software visualization constitutes a promising approach to help them comprehend multiple aspects of the evolving software. However, portraying all the data is not an easy task as there are many dimensions to the data (e.g. time, files, properties) to be considered. This paper presents a new software visualization metaphor inspired by concentric waves, which gives information about the software evolution in different levels of detail. This new metaphor is able to portray large amount of data and may also be used to consider different dimensions of the data. It uses the concepts of the formation of concentric waves to map software evolution data generated during the waves formation life cycle. The metaphor is useful for exploring and identifying certain patterns in the software evolution. To evaluate its applicability, we conducted an exploratory study to show how the visualization can quickly answer different questions asked by software engineers when evolving their software. Technical debt is a metaphor that describes the effect of immature artefacts in software development. One of its types is documentation debt, which can be identified by locating missing, inadequate or incomplete artefacts in software projects. Nowadays, we can observe more organizations using agile methods to support their activities. In particular, the use of user stories reduces the focus on requirement specification tasks and, as a consequence, creates difficulties that need to be overcame by the development team. In order to investigate these difficulties and assess whether they create a favourable scenario for incurring documentation debt, this paper presents the results of a literature review and an exploratory study. The results from both studies allowed us to identify a list of causes that can lead the development team to incur documentation debt when working with agile requirements. This is an important step in order to manage the technical debt from a preventive perspective.

With the emergence of Information Extraction systems driven by ontologies, boosted by the Semantic Web, there is a need for the development of scoring schemas that enable the automatic classification of information. These schemas, even so little explored in the Portuguese language, provide measures used in the stage of classification of relevant instances to ontological classes. In this way, this paper presents: (i) a brief discussion about existing scoring measures based on PMI (Pointwise Mutual Information);(ii) new scoring measures based on PMI and Standard Deviation Calculation;and (iii) an evaluation of all discussed measures in the context of Brazilian Portuguese texts from the web. © 2015 ACM.

The increasing in the production and availability of unstructured information on the Web grows daily. This abundance of unstructured information is a great challenge for acquisition of structured knowledge. Many approaches have been proposed for extracting information from texts written in natural language. However, only a few studies have investigated the extraction of information from texts written in Portuguese. Thus, this work aims to propose and evaluate an unsupervised method for ontology population using the Web as a big source of information in the context of the Portuguese language. The results of the experiments are encouraging and demonstrated that the proposed approach reached a precision rate of 67% in the instances of ontological classes extraction. © SBC 2015.

The Web systems domain has faced an increasing number of devices, browsers, and platforms to cope with, driving software systems to be more flexible to accomodate them. software product line (SPL) engineering can be used as a strategy to implement systems capable of handling such a diversity. To this end, automated tool support is almost indispensable. However, current tool support gives more emphasis to modeling variability in the problem domain, over the support of variability at the solution domain. There is a need for mapping the variability between both abstraction levels, so as to determine what implementation impact a certain variability has. In this paper, we propose the FeatureJS, a FeatureIDE extension aiming at Javascript and HTML support for SPL engineering. The tool combines feature-oriented programming and preprocessors, as a strategy to map variability at source code with the variability modeled at a higher level of abstraction. We carried out a preliminary evaluation with an industrial project, aiming to characterize the capability of the tool to handle SPL engineering in the Web systems domain. © 2014 ACM.

Context. Distributed software development is currently a modern practice in software industry. This is especially true in Open Source software (OSS) development community. Understanding how developers' practices are on those projects may guide communities to successfully manage their projects. Goal. We mined two repositories of the Apache Httpd project in order to gather information about its developers' behavior. Methods. We developed an approach to cross data gathered from mail list and source code repository through mining techniques. The approach uses software visualization to analyze the mined data. We conducted an experimental evaluation of the approach to assess the behavioral patterns from OSS development community. Results. The collected data built a rich set of information. The results highlight Apache developers' behavior patterns. We perceived that there is a correlation over time between emails and commits of the Apache project developers. Conclusion. The use of data mining and software visualization to analyze crossing data sources can spot important properties of the development process. Quality attributes are important to creating, understanding, and evaluating software architectures. The architectural attributes and challenges for ecosystem architectures are different from one-off systems. The study of those aspects that influence quality attributes in this new environment can help to understand these architectures. In previous work, we hypothesized that the architecture for an ecosystem should be extensible, scalable, and flexible and reported initial investigations into extensibility and scalability. In this paper, we report on our investigation into flexibility. We analyze various features that impact how to design flexible architectures. We highlight that flexibility for ecosystems is not only a technical issue, but a business issue as well. We classified features that affect flexibility into business and technical dimensions. We adapted a software system metric for flexibility to measure the flexibility of an ecosystem's architecture. © 2014 ACM.
