Technical debt is a term that has been used to describe the increased cost of changing or maintaining a system due to shortcuts taken during its development. As technical debt is a recent research area, its different types and their indicators are not organized yet. Therefore, this paper proposes an ontology of terms on technical debt in order to organize a common vocabulary for the area. The organized concepts derived from the results of a systematic literature mapping. The proposed ontology was evaluated in two steps. In the first one, some ontology design quality criteria were used. For the second one, a specialist in the area performed an initial evaluation. This work contributes to evolve the Technical Debt Landscape through the organization of the different types of technical debt and their indicators. We consider this an important contribution for both researchers and practitioners because this information was spread out in the literature hindering their use in research and development activities.

software architecture has become an established discipline in industry. Nevertheless, the available documentation of architecture is often not perceived as adequate by developers. As a foundation for the improvement of methods and tools around architecture documentation, we conducted a survey with 147 industrial participants, investigating their current problems and wishes for the future. Participants from different countries in Europe, Asia, North and South America shared their experiences. This paper presents the results of the survey. The results confirmed the common belief that architecture documentation is most frequently outdated and inconsistent and backed it up with data. Further, developers perceive difficulties with a "one-size-fits-all" architecture documentation, which does not adequately provide information for their specific task and context. Developers seek for more interactive ways of working with architecture documentation that allow finding needed information more easily with extended navigation and search possibilities. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Context: Change Request (CR) repositories play an important role in the software maintenance and evolution process. Through a CR repository, software changes are reported and assigned to developers. Finding the appropriate developer to a CR is crucial for obtaining the lowest, economically feasible, fixing time. Nevertheless, assigning CRs is a laborintensive and time consuming task. Although many work have proposed automated approaches for CR assignment, they have been implemented without investigating the fundamental aspects which characterize the task itself. Objective: This paper investigates the effort that is taken to assign CR to appropriate developers and identifies the fundamental aspects that characterize it, such as the strategies to perform the assignments and the complexity involved in them. Such investigation improves the current knowledge on the topic, providing researchers and practitioners with useful information towards developing effective solutions. Method: A survey was performed with software developers to understand CR assignment in the Brazilian Federal Organization for Data Processing. The questionnaire was composed of 38 questions, being them both open-ended and closed-ended. We analyzed the answers of 36 respondents. Results: We find that: there is a significant amount of time being spent on assignments (e.g., assigning 20 CRs can take up to 3.3 hours);there are many strategies used to assign CRs, which are complementary to those used in current automated solutions;and CR assignment is very complexity due to a process that requires cognitive abilities for information seeking, communication, and memorization. Conclusion: CR repositories are fundamental to software maintenance, however assigning CRs to developers is an expensive activity. Although we understand that fully and totally accurate automation of assignments is unlikely, further improvements on this direction are feasible and necessary to reduce costs. Program comprehension is an essential activity to perform software maintenance and evolution. Comprehensibility often encompasses the analysis of individual logical units, called features, which are often scattered through many program modules. Understanding how the feature code is implemented along the software evolution history is essential, for instance, to perform refactoring activities. However, existing tools do not provide means to comprehend the feature code evolution. To overcome this shortcoming, this paper presents a tool called Source Miner Evolution (SME) that provides multiple interactive and coordinated views to comprehend feature code evolution. SME implements a feature-sensitive comparison of multiple program versions. Our usability assessment with experienced developers indicated that SME allows them to efficiently perform recurring comprehension tasks on evolving feature code. The developers' performance was influenced by the combination of visual SME mechanisms, such as colors, tool tips and menu-popup interactions over the features' code elements.

Urban mobility is an issue that, in general, makes citizens daily life stressful and complicated. Crowd sourcing-based systems promote what is called "the power of the citizens", stimulating people to contribute on solving public and governmental problems, being mobility one of them. In our project, named Ubibus, we investigate how crowd sourcing can be applied to improve public transportation. In this paper, we propose the use of collaborative riding as a complementary alternative to public transportation, integrating private and public vehicles. We also investigate what can motivate people to participate in such a system, and how Gamification techniques can be used to improve the adherence to the system usage. In order to evaluate the subject and to understand the actual problems as regular people see it, we conducted two exploratory studies with passengers and drivers. The first one is composed by an online questionnaire, answered by Brazilian people, and the second one is a field study conducted with two groups of students at our University. This paper aims to present the performed studies and to discuss the results achieved with them, which were used as requirements to guide the design of a collaborative riding system. © 2012 IEEE.
