Currently, companies launch digital transformation initiatives (DTI) to cope with technological changes, challenging competitive environments, increasing customer demands, and other digitalization challenges. The DTI spectrum is broad and covers structural changes (*** digital units) as well as contextual changes (e.g. overarching cultural change programs). Often companies launch multiple concurrent DTIs resulting in considerable organizational complexity. However, research on how to manage the interplay of DTIs successfully is still scarce. Therefore, we distinguish three coordination aspects (i.e. strategic alignment, governance, communication & culture) to manage DTIs' interplay. Drawing on organizational and IS research as well as on a single case study with eight interviews, we conceptualize DTIs as manifestations of digital transformation. We show that multiple concurrent DTIs can foster structural and contextual ambidexterity, i.e. leading to hybrid ambidexterity in organizations. Stress is a societal and economical problem increasingly discussed in literature. Although technology may itself induce stress, various studies highlight its potential for stress management. Current research focusses on developing systems that assess people's stress using mobile devices' sensing capabilities. These mobile stress assessment (MSA) systems collect and analyze sensor data on the user, the environment, and their interplay. Various instantiations have demonstrated the feasibility of MSA in different application scenarios. However, a common ground on MSA design is yet missing. In this work, we investigate design-related differences and commonalities of MSA in a literature analysis comprising 112 studies. We establish a design knowledge base, which introduces an abstract blueprint consisting of common architectural components, proposes design elements shaping the design depending on the application scenario, and describes archetypes prevailing in current literature. Future research should extend our work to a design theory to promote stress-adaptive information systems development. © 40th International Conference on Information systems, ICIS 2019. Information systems play a central role in the energy sector for achieving climate targets. With increasing digitization and data availability in the energy sector, data-driven machine learning (ML) approaches emerged, showing high potential. So far, research has focused on optimizing ML approaches’ prediction performance. However, this is a one-sided perspective. ML approaches require large computation times and capacities leading to high energy consumption. With the goal of sustainable energy systems, research on ML approaches should be extended to include the application’s energy consumption. ML solutions must be designed in such a way that the resulting savings in energy (and emissions) are greater than the energy consumption caused using the ML solution. To address this need, we develop the Sustainable Machine Learning Balance Sheet as a framework allowing to holistically evaluate and develop sustainable ML solutions which we validated in a case study and through expert interviews. © 2022 17th International Conference on Wirtschaftsinformatik, WI 2022. Educational operating systems are crucial for facilitating learning in the digital age, as they exist at the intersection of technology and education. While their technical role is well understood, improving their educational value requires enhancing traditional approaches. This paper explores ways to enrich educational operating systems not just through technological advancement, but also by integrating pedagogical principles. In an ever-changing world, the need for an adaptive and responsive educational operating system to meet diverse student needs is crucial. Through case studies, we analyze how design, interactivity, and accessibility can transform these systems into effective and appealing learning environments. We propose a series of recommendations for the future development of educational operating systems, focusing on enhancing the learning experience and promoting student autonomy, thereby offering a fresh perspective on how technology and education can blend harmoniously and efficiently. © 2024 IEEE.

Modern technical systems often consist of multiple components that must fulfill complex functions in diverse and sometimes safety-critical situations. Precisely specifying the behavioral requirements for such systems is a challenge, especially because there may be inconsistent requirements in possibly unforeseen component configurations. We propose a scenario-based specification approach based on Modal Sequence Diagrams and a novel technique for finding inconsistencies in such specification based on a combination of simulation and synthesis techniques. The simulation via the play-out algorithm can be used to analyze the scenario requirements in large and dynamic systems. Play-out, however, may run into avoidable violations, so that the engineer cannot assume the specification's inconsistency nor its consistency. We thus propose to check specification parts for static component configurations via synthesis. Then, if the part specifications are consistent, the resulting controllers can guide the play-out for the complete specification, avoiding more avoidable violations in the next simulation run. © 2012 ACM.

Workplaces develop more and more to digital workplaces. However, this may lead to technostress. An understanding of the profiles of technologies used at the digital workplace, their interplay, and how they influence technostress is valuable as it can assist developers of technologies and designers of workplaces to prevent technostress. Therefore, we analyze literature and conduct expert interviews to identify ten characteristics of digital technologies that relate to technostress. By analyzing data from 4,560 employees, we evaluate the characteristics. Furthermore, we develop characteristic profiles of multiple technologies used at the respondent's digital workplace. Lastly, we investigate their influence on technostress creators using structural equation modeling. We find that the different portfolios of technology profiles influence technostress creators in different manners. Our contributions are identifying additional characteristics of digital technologies, showing the importance of investigating workplaces as a whole, and highlighting design opportunities for health-oriented workplaces that alleviate technostress. © ICIS 2020. Recommendations concerning best practices are ubiquitous in academic literature as well as audit reports and institutional policy. However, information on the effectiveness of recommended practices, or the context within which that effectiveness has been observed, is not readily available. In the rare occasions this information is available, it is not packaged in such a way as to support practitioners. Most organizations and projects do not possess sufficient resources to implement even a fraction of the practices espoused, so often choose to adopt none. There are also few if any tools to support practice selection. This paper describes an approach to identify, analyze, synthesize, and package empirical information about practice effectiveness, and evaluates the knowledge gained from the development of a prototype tool designed to implement that approach.

software product families are rarely created right away but they emerge when a domain becomes mature enough to sustain their long-term investments. The typical pattern is to start with a small set of products to quickly enter a new market. As soon as the business proves to be successful new investments are directed to consolidating the software assets. The various products are migrated towards a flexible platform where the assets are shared and new products can be derived from. In order to create and maintain the platform, the organization needs to carry out several activities such as recovering the architectures of single products and product families, designing the reference architecture, isolating the variable parts, and generalizing software components. In this paper, we introduce a product family construction process that exploits related systems and product families, and we describe methods and tools used. We also present an approach for classifying platforms according to platform coverage and variation and describe three techniques to handle variability across single products and whole product families. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

Urban mobility is an issue that, in general, makes citizens daily life stressful and complicated. Crowd sourcing-based systems promote what is called "the power of the citizens", stimulating people to contribute on solving public and governmental problems, being mobility one of them. In our project, named Ubibus, we investigate how crowd sourcing can be applied to improve public transportation. In this paper, we propose the use of collaborative riding as a complementary alternative to public transportation, integrating private and public vehicles. We also investigate what can motivate people to participate in such a system, and how Gamification techniques can be used to improve the adherence to the system usage. In order to evaluate the subject and to understand the actual problems as regular people see it, we conducted two exploratory studies with passengers and drivers. The first one is composed by an online questionnaire, answered by Brazilian people, and the second one is a field study conducted with two groups of students at our University. This paper aims to present the performed studies and to discuss the results achieved with them, which were used as requirements to guide the design of a collaborative riding system. © 2012 IEEE.

Context: The technical debt (TD) concept describes a tradeoff between short-term and long-term goals in software development. While it is highly useful as a metaphor, it has utility beyond the facilitation of discussion, to inspire a useful set of methods and tools that support the identification, measurement, monitoring, management, and payment of TD. Objective: This study focuses on the identification of TD. We evaluate human elicitation of TD and compare it to automated identification. Method: We asked a development team to identify TD items in artifacts from a software project on which they were working. We provided the participants with a TD template and a short questionnaire. In addition, we also collected the output of three tools to automatically identify TD and compared it to the results of human elicitation. Results: There is little overlap between the TD reported by different developers, so aggregation, rather than consensus, is an appropriate way to combine TD reported by multiple developers. The tools used are especially useful for identifying defect debt but cannot help in identifying many other types of debt, so involving humans in the identification process is necessary. Conclusion: We have conducted a case study that focuses on the practical identification of TD, one area that could be facilitated by tools and techniques. It contributes to the TD landscape, which depicts an understanding of relationships between different types of debt and how they are best discovered. Copyright 2013 ACM.
