Complex dynamic systems can be simulated using ANSYS®(ANSYS, Inc., Canonsburg, PA, USA) but for controller design Simulink®(MathWorks, Inc., Natick, MA, USA) is the appropriate software tool. The MATLAB®(MathWorks, Inc., Natick, MA, USA) program makeStateSpace, which is introduced in this paper, transfers the results of ANSYS modal analysis into a modal state space formulation that can then be included in Simulink. A model order reduction to diminish the system size is also possible. Hence, with the help of makeStateSpace the advantages of both powerful software tools ANSYS and Simulink can be used for controller design.

This article describes the successful implementation of a modular system concept for ultra precision assembly tasks by means of the accurate alignment of light emitting and receiving modules in front of buried waveguides in optical circuit boards. The constitutive result of a Saxon research project FGM [1] is a modular designed assembling system, that enables vertical fine positioning and gripper integrated angle adjustment in opposition to conventional Surface Mount technology. Today these sensitive components are mounted and adjusted predominantly manually under special laboratory conditions. The technical challenge is to develop new methods and assembling components for high-precision and reproducible packaging in an automated assembling process. This is an important step to reduce the fabrication costs drastically and to smooth the way from a pure laboratory method to an industrial solution concept.

Quality monitoring is necessary for a stable manufacturing, especially in the case of laser welding processes. During the project a system was developed which allows the analysis of in process data by fuzzy pattern recognition methods. This resulted in improved prediction of seam irregularities as compared with conventional methods. For the assembly of an inclination sensor, which uses a sensor principle based on micro electrical mechanical system (MEMS) elements, an active assembly strategy was developed. Its aim is the precise orientation of the MEMS relatively to gravity direction, so that no further calibration of the sensor has to be done. Main features are the continuous control of angle signal from the incomplete sensor and a new gripper with tilt function and force limiting kinematics. The assembly strategy as well as the gripper design are described in this paper.

The fraunhofer Gesellschaft is the largest organization for applied research in Europe, having a staff of some 12,700, predominantly qualified scientists and engineers, with an annual research budget of over one billion euros. One of its current internal Market-oriented strategic preliminary research (MaVo) projects is FASPAS (Function Consolidated Adaptive Structures Combining Piezo and Software Technologies for Autonomous Systems) which aims to promote adaptive structure technology for commercial exploitation within the current main research fields of the participating FhIs, namely automotive and machinetools engineering. Under the project management of the fraunhofer-Institute Structural Durability and System Reliability LBF the six fraunhofer Institutes LBF, IWU, IKTS, ISC, AiS and IIS bring together their competences ranging from material sciences to system reliability, in order to clarify unanswered questions. The predominant goal is to develop and validate methods and tools to establish a closed, modular development chain for the design and realization of such active structures which shall be useful in its width and depth, i.e. for specific R&D achievements such as the actuator development (depth) as well as the complete system design and realization (width). FASPAS focuses on the development of systems and on the following scientific topics: 1.) on design and manufacturing technology for piezo components as integrable actuator/sensor semi-finished modules, 2.) on development and transducer module integration of miniaturized electronics for charge generating sensor systems, 3.) on the development of methods to analyze system reliability of active structures, 4.) on the development of autonomous software structures for flexible, low cost electronics hardware for bulk production and 5.) on the construction and validation of the complete, cost-effective development chain of function consolidated structures through application oriented demonstration structures.

This paper describes an object-oriented model and a reuse-oriented methodology for the codesign of embedded computing systems. Our approach has been founded on a hierarchy of classes which describes all possible specifications of systems of a certain domain, the behavior of hard- and software-components, and the target-architectures. The content of this knowledge base (re-usable, formalized descriptions) is determined by the analysis of known systems. We present solutions for a specification methodology, the modeling of heterogeneous systems by task graphs, and the mapping process from specified requirements down to hard- or software components in a target architecture. The approach is illustrated by functions of the domain of robot controls.
