Previous studies have demonstrated that silver nano-powder mixed electrical discharge machining (PMEDM) is a potential technique for concurrent ablative shaping medical implants and generating antibacterial layers on the surfaces. PMEDM modified surfaces with deposited silver offer excellent antibacterial properties along with very good biocompatibility. However, for medical applications, PMEDM is still facing challenges providing sufficiently uniform distribution of deposited silver and preventing spattered layers that might lead to delamination from the modified surface. It was indicated that ultrasonic vibration (UV) has remarkable effects on the fluid dynamics in the spark gap, which positively affect the silver distribution and reduce the generation of spattered layers. Consequently, in this study, a Ti6Al4V workpiece is vibrated with an ultrasonic frequency of 22.3 kHz and an amplitude of 2.5 μm during the PMEDM process. The effect of vibration direction in X and Z axis on the silver deposition is evaluated while discharge energy is varied up to 125 μJ. For comparative analyses also PMEDM without vibration assistance is investigated. Ti6Al4V hollow tool electrodes with an outer diameter of 3 mm and an inner diameter of 2.5 mm are utilised for internal flushing with a pressure of 4 bar. A hydrocarbon-based dielectric fluid is mixed with silver nanopowder at a concentration of 15 g/l. Results show that UV assisted PMEDM increases the content of deposited silver up to 1.7 times compared to PMEDM without vibration. UV with vibration in Z direction and pulse energies of 55 μJ and 125 μJ results in uniform silver distribution and significantly decreases spattered layer formation, whereas the use of vibration in X-direction leads to negative effects. The structure of factory systems has a long-term impact on the productivity and performance of production systems. With an increasing relevance of decentral renewable energy sources, factory planning becomes more complex due to an increase of decision criteria and possible solutions, but ecological impacts are also growingly depending on early structure decisions. However, decisions during planning processes in industry are still based on experience, qualitative assessments and discussions. Thus, planning results may not exploit the potential of the available solution space, nor do they allow quantitative traceability of layout configurations. Generative Design (GD) gained popularity in topology optimization and building construction and provides promising opportunities for complex design tasks. Not least with the increasing relevance of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in manufacturing, new methods and technologies for optimization become available to factory planners. Hence, the paper describes options for enhanced decisions in sustainable factory layout planning. Therefore, it provides a quick overview on optimization and GD in layout planning as well as the relation towards BIM and sustainability assessment. Based on this, possible extensions of optimization targets and boundaries towards energy and sustainability-related criteria is elaborated. Afterwards, necessary and potential data acquisition with the openBIM-related Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) is discussed. The paper concludes with an outlook towards further investigations on the overlap of layout design, BIM and sustainability. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.. All rights reserved.

Automation of inspection for quality control is needed to overcome the errors and delays inherent in manual processes. machine learning methods have the potential to greatly improve automated inspection. However, machine learning techniques require training data that are precisely labeled and reflect the distribution of defects to be detected. Physically collecting suitable training data requires significant time and prolongs the overall time for system development. To address this challenge, a new study is presented that explores synthetic data generation for a state-of-the-art anomaly detection (AD) model in the electric motor housing (EMH) surface inspection. The study successfully demonstrates using synthetic data for anomaly detection and presents a comparison of detection performance by models trained solely on synthetic data and models trained on both synthetic and real data. The study shows that real data combined with synthetic data can increase overall model performance. The study also addresses current challenges in using synthetic data and proposes directions for future work.

Machining titanium alloys such as Ti-6Al-4V results in a high thermomechanical load on cutting tools and consequently short tool lifes. With respect to a necessary reduction of the resulting cutting tool temperatures, ultrashort pulse (USP) laser fabricated micro-textured rake faces offer direct supply of cooling lubricant into the cutting zone and lead to a reduced heat induction. As a result, micro-textured CVD diamond thick film cutting tools are also capable of machining high-performance materials due to reduced contact temperatures. In the scope of the research, the resulting temperature distribution for micro-textured rake faces will be compared under both dry and wet process conditions. Measurements show a reduction of the resulting cutting tool temperatures of ΔÏ't = 27.9 % using micro-textured cutting tools compared to non-textured cutting tools. A validated simulation provides valuable information about the contact temperatures enabling a specific development of the micro-texture geometry. As a result, a reduction of the contact temperature between chip and rake face by ΔÏ'T = 24.7 % was possible. © 2022 The Authors.

A Nonlinear Delay Model for Metabolic Oscillations in Yeast Cells

We introduce two time-delay models of metabolic oscillations in yeast cells. Our model tests a hypothesis that the oscillations occur as multiple pathways share a limited resource which we equate to the number of available ribosomes. We initially explore a single-protein model with a constraint equation governing the total resource available to the cell. The model is then extended to include three proteins that share a resource pool. Three approaches are considered at constant delay to numerically detect oscillations. First, we use a spectral element method to approximate the system as a discrete map and evaluate the stability of the linearized system about its equilibria by examining its eigenvalues. For the second method, we plot amplitudes of the simulation trajectories in 2D projections of the parameter space. We use a history function that is consistent with published experimental results to obtain metabolic oscillations. Finally, the spectral element method is used to convert the system to a boundary value problem whose solutions correspond to approximate periodic solutions of the system. Our results show that certain combinations of total resource available and the time delay, lead to oscillations. We observe that an oscillation region in the parameter space is between regions admitting steady states that correspond to zero and constant production. Similar behavior is found with the three-protein model where all proteins require the same production time. However, a shift in the protein production rates peaks occurs for low available resource suggesting that our model captures the shared resource pool dynamics. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. Awareness about climate change has led to policies and regulations but also customer preferences favoring sustainable production. Thus, producing businesses are confronted by this, as they consume a large share of resources. Therefore, when producing, additional dimensions beyond commercial feasibility ought to be considered. Here, literature on sustainability from the field of engineering science is systematically searched and analyzed for approaches leading to actual recommendations for action. Hence, this bottom-up approach, incorporating the production engineers’ point of view, represents an inside view of how the topic of sustainability has arrived at production companies. The focus on commercial feasibility ensures high relevance to practice, as production needs to become both sustainable and competitive. Even though exemplary collections of different approaches addressing the topic of sustainability in production can be found in literature, novelty is provided by the structured manner literature was collected and the special focus on approaches leading to practice-relevant recommendations for action. Thus, a comprehensive overview of approaches applicable to the manufacturing domain is presented.

To enable interoperable communication between enterprise software and industrial assets, the Internet of Production reference model suggests a single platform for routing and data access. This Middleware+ must not only act as a central message broker but also meet the challenge of incompatible data models. However, its exact capabilities remain blurred. We first compile relevant technologies and standards to integrate. Definition of requirements and a software architecture proposal follow. Considering the heterogeneous degree of connectivity within producing companies, we then sketch the path to implementation based on maturity levels. The result is a distributed information system architecture ensuring the rigorous use of semantic information models throughout the entire lifecycle of a product. © 2021 The Authors. In the course of saving resources and energy caused by factors such as environmental protection and the climate crisis, various motor topologies are being developed and investigated continuously. One of these developments is being promoted by researchers at the EAA and IWU and concerns the implementation of an innovative motor concept with radially laminated stator steel sheets and flux barriers. Various new developments in design and manufacturing technology have to be implemented as well as analyzed for this new development. This paper provides an insight into the electromagnetic relationships within the newly arranged grain-oriented laminations as well as findings from the production of the first prototypes. Furthermore measurement results on the electromagnetic behavior of the stator are given as well as subsequent findings and derived decisions are presented.

Influence of clearance and velocity during blanking on the fatigue behavior of cellulose-based biocomposites

Cellulose-based biocomposites, such as Cottonid, are a promising class of materials to improve the carbon footprint of products during their service life. Cottonid has high technological potential due to its physical and mechanical similarities to engineering plastics and light metals. To replace traditional metallic materials in industry, cellulose-based semi-finished products need to be formed and cut. In particular, blanking is the most cost-effective and industrially common cutting method for metals. However, this study investigates the influence of various blanking process parameters on the quality and the fatigue strength of the resulting cutting edges of Cottonid. The presented results give insights on how the relationships between process parameters during cutting and resulting material properties known from conventional materials can be transferred to cellulose-based biocomposites like Cottonid. The relative clearance was varied between 4 and 10% and the cutting velocity between 0.05 and 10 m/s. It was evident that slower velocities and smaller clearances resulted in visibly better cutting edges. In order to relate this effect to the mechanical performance of Cottonid, new 3-point bend specimens were taken from the blanked strips for fatigue testing. It was found that the fatigue strength was significantly affected by the velocity and clearance. Further, similar to metallic materials, clean-cut (smooth area) and a fractured zone can be clearly distinguished. A good cutting edge quality results in a higher resistance of the Cottonid component against crack initiation at process-induced defects. The knowledge gained may enable an efficient cutting process for cellulose-based materials with higher fatigue strength in the future.
