Due to global and political influence, resilient and versatile production systems are unavoidable. Based on existing Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems there is a growing need for a consistent communication between machines and product design to enable integrated product and production process design. Core aspects are integrating the product design information directly into the production equipment and their feedback into the product design as well as into other phases of the product creation and usage. Therefore, a generalized production description language as well as an architecture for the digital integrated product design and production need to be developed. This paper presents the first results of a use case in the automotive industry. The approach of developing the functional architecture is shown. Several feedback to X approaches were researched in literature and analyzed regarding functional requirements for integration in the developed architecture. The results are the main basis for further implementation within the automotive production. Moreover, the main challenges and next steps are discussed. © 2024 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

This paper explores the use of deep learning-based optical character recognition (OCR) to identify part numbers for used automotive parts. It compares open source and advanced AI methods to commercial tools from Google, Amazon, and Microsoft. The study finds that fine-tuned open source models outperform commercial services, especially for complex part numbers unrelated to any language structure. The preferred open source method, MaskedTextSpotter, is fine-tuned with image data from old vehicle and electrical parts, captured by a smartphone and 2D barcode scanner. Additionally, a new data augmentation method, CharChan, is introduced, replacing detected characters with random examples for better character recognition. The experiments demonstrate the efficacy of deep learning-based OCR for automotive part number identification. © The Author(s) 2025.

The 2023 European Innovation Scoreboard reveals that there is an innovation asymmetry between different EU regions which is leading to an innovation gap. In particular southern and eastern EU countries showcase a lower level of innovation compared to their northern and western counterparts. Addressing this disparity, the ENTRPRENEDU project, funded by the European Union, pioneers a unique approach tailored for emerging and moderate innovation regions. This paper presents the development process of the curriculum for the ENTRPRENEDU online mentoring program, detailing the demand analysis, curriculum development, and implementation phases. This paper contributes to the discourse on entrepreneurial online education and mentoring program development by showcasing a tailored approach to curriculum design. The findings offer practical insights for educators, policymakers, and practitioners seeking to nurture entrepreneurship and innovation in diverse regional contexts. © 2024 Academic Conferences and Publishing International Limited. In the field of 3D model reconstruction, manifold methods have been developed that derive CAD models from 3D scan data. Opposed to classical CAD modelling, where surface and solid modelling exist, a further diversification of modelling techniques is observed, caused by different methods to build up the geometry. This research introduces a new classification, the so-called Level of Complexities. It can be applied to the complete Reverse Engineering process chain and lays the foundation for further research on how to match requirements arising from all process steps and downstream applications. © 2024 Proceedings of the design Society. To effectively utilize the capacities of the production facilities, flexible and fast transport, and manipulation technology is essential. Current path planning methods use simple paths without exploiting the physical limitations of mobile robots. This paper deals with the time-efficient kinematic planning of path and velocity trajectories for autonomous mobile robots equipped with a differential-drive, used to load and unload machine tools. For a close parking position next to the machine tools, the mobile robot must approach practically straight without the necessity of turning at the end. After a brief definition of the kinematics of a mobile robot with nonholonomic constraints, a Bezier-curve is combined with multiple jerk-limited velocity trajectories considering the initial and final state as well as the physical limitations. For a time-efficient acceleration and deceleration the maximum acceleration of the mobile robot is used and differentiated into the radial and tangential acceleration. This allows a quickly reached close parking pose next to a machine tool. The algorithm is tested with simulations in RVIZ in combination with Gazebo and ROS2 as well as with the real mobile robot Tend-o-Bot. © 2024 IEEE.

Nine qualitative expert interviews were conducted to assess the requirements for an intelligent assistance system for virtual assembly in extended reality applications. The research interest lies in understanding current industry and research needs for assistance features of AR, VR, and MR applications that support manual assembly tasks. Additionally, the use of artificial intelligence as a supporting technology was investigated. We gathered expert opinions on relevant features and grouped them into seven categories: Augmentation of information in-situ, identification of components, provision of data, analysis of user action, analysis of environment, optimization of processes, and Usability improvements. The experts feedback on the concept of a software demonstrator was collected and structured. The research shows a need for adaptive assistance systems that are capable of categorizing the user's actions and intent in order to assist efficiently. © 2024 IEEE.

In dynamic environments, businesses not only look for sustainable technology solutions, but also for new business model opportunities that management can apply as they move to a more sustainable future. Being embedded in the process of analyzing the status quo and identifying potential improvements of sustainability management, this article focuses on the development of a catalog with circular economy-based business model patterns to provide an overview of universally applicable implementation measures for business model development. For this purpose, four steps were conducted: An extensive literature research to identify a comprehensive collection of sustainable business model patterns with specific emphasis on circular economy, reduction of identified patterns to exclude redundancies and ambiguities, derivation of the influence of these patterns on the elements of the Business Model Canvas—taking into account their impact on environmental sustainability, and a final enrichment with further details for practical application. This includes a definition, benefits, barriers, implementation steps as well as filterable categories for the specific selection of business model patterns. The result is a catalog which provides a valuable resource for businesses looking to adopt more sustainable business practices. © The Author(s) 2025.

Digitalization has a significant impact on value-creating organizations of all sectors. New business models and processes are becoming established, the development of products and services is changing as well as the interaction with customers, partners and suppliers. As these changes create new requirements for companies, they need to reorient and adapt to them. To structure the topic of corporate digital transformation with its many individual elements, which can either be digitized and networked/integrated or create the conditions for the digital transformation of further elements, a reference framework has been developed that covers the essential value creation elements of a company in the context of digital transformation. Based on this framework, a self-assessment tool ('Digital Transformation Assessment (DTA)') was developed to carry out a survey on the current status of corporate digital transformation globally. This contribution outlines the key analysis results, through an applied and observational research, within the timeframe from 2020 to 2023, based on a quanti-qualitative analysis of answers from over 880 companies worldwide. The paper contributes to the literature on digital transformation by verifying through the analysis of the results that effective digital transformation requires not only investments in technology, but also a holistic approach that encompasses organizational, cultural, and strategic changes. Therefore, the role of leaders and the creation of a digital transformation-oriented corporate culture are keys to driving success in this process. © 2023 Proceedings of the European Conference on Management, Leadership and Governance. In order to be able to use the resources more sustainably and at the same time reduce the costs of machining, it is important to identify new types of cutting materials. Up to now, tools made of carbide have often been used in machining. Carbide has a high hardness H and, compared to other tool materials, enables long tool life T. This has a positive effect on process reliability. Conventional carbide usually consists of tungsten carbide WC and cobalt Co. The tungsten carbide WC represents the hard material itself. The cobalt Co is a binder and ensures that the hard materials are kept together. This combination makes the carbide less hard than the pure hard materials. The reduction of the hardness H of the material also results in a reduction in the tool life T of the milling tool. Various approaches are being pursued to increase the tool life T of the milling tool. One approach is the reduction of the binder in carbides. The reduction of the binder increases the hardness H of the material and thus the tool life T of the milling tool. Conventional carbide has a cobalt content of 6% © 2023 Euspen Headquarters.
